On the flip side to Gumdrops thread.

I love the John Smiths adverts - particularly the diving one "great bombing".

As I mentioned on the other thread...the va-va-voom car advert (can't remember which car....) very sexy bloke in it....

jodee · 01/08/2002 00:06

All the Budweiser ads are great - the 'Real American Heroes: Mr Really Bad Toupee Wearer' - excellent!

Tissy · 01/08/2002 08:49

I love all the "Famous Grouse" ads- the dancing grouse always makes me chuckle!

Gumdrop · 01/08/2002 12:54

I loved the old Jaguar advert - mainly because of the song and the lovely husky male voice singing it. I can't remember what it is and who by, but the lines I remember are.....

What a wicked thing to do
To make me dream of you

See, I can be all mushy, the advertisers just have to press the "right" buttons.

Azzie · 01/08/2002 12:56

Did it make you buy a Jag, though?

Gumdrop · 01/08/2002 12:56

I wish...............

Azzie · 01/08/2002 12:57

The one that made me laugh was the ad (I think it was a VW add) where people kept seeing the word 'die' and then it turned out to be 'diesel'. I saw it for the first time the day after my dh had accidently filled my diesel car with unleaded...

Gumdrop, the singer is the divine Chris Isaak - became well known when he did music for Twin Peaks. The album is called 'Wicked Game' and I recently bought it for £6.99 in the bargain bin at Sainsbury's!

Gumdrop · 01/08/2002 13:10

Thanks Mopsy - heading straight for Amazon

Yes Star, I love that advert too and the Walkers Crisps 'Beckham' one!

ticklebyday · 01/08/2002 15:48

Yes, love the walkers crisp ads - Linekers great in them - have you seen the latest one with Lennox Lewis?

Jendy · 01/08/2002 15:48

I like the kellog's cornflakes 6.45 bc advert, I don't know why but I find the sight of the bloke with his y-fronts on back to front hysterical. Can't say the bloke looks much better after the cornflakes!

Paula1 · 01/08/2002 15:58

Showing my age, I used to love that Kia Ora advert with the crows - anyone remember it?

Ooh, Chris Izaak - swoon!!!!

SueDonim · 01/08/2002 19:15

Ks, was it "A 1001 cleans a big, big carpet for less than half a crown."? (Stands back whilst waiting for deluge of questions about 'half a crown'!!)

Hee hee, KS - I'd have loved to get half a crown pocket money!! I think I received a florin.

I don't recall the Refreshers one but do you remember "Don't forget the Fruit Gums, Mum"? with the boy looking out of the window as his mum went off shopping? And what about Opal Fruits? "Four refrshing fruit flavours, orange, lemon, stawberry, lime - made to make your mouth water!"?

The adverts here in Indonesia are truly awful, as are teh programmes. I'll never complain about UK TV, ever again.

WideWebWitch · 01/08/2002 20:54

One of the only ads I like (I turn the sound down for most of them) is the 2 minute soup one where a woman puts a soup in the microwave, sets it to 2 minutes and then gets into bed with her bloke. Cut to: they have obviously just had sex and the microwave pings (i.e she knew it would only last 2 minutes). Think this must be on after the watershed...

ionesmum · 01/08/2002 20:54

Gumdrop, me too! I think this is the only ad that's ever made me want the thing that it's advertising!

Suedonim, I may be slightly (!) older than you but I used to get half-a-crown aged about 11 (1962) and it bought me a half-hour riding lesson every week.

Also emember "Smarties - milk chocolate Smarties - a tube of Smarties means, lots and lots of chocolate beans, yes you get lots and lots and lots and lots, of Smarties - buy some for Lulu!"

And "you'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent".

"John Collier, John Collier, the window to watch."

"Cool, clean, Consulate - cool as a mountain stream."

Are you begging for mercy yet?

I love the current car ad where the bloke driving makes the skidding noises round the bends!

janh · 01/08/2002 21:13

oo, sobernow, you just reminded me - "murraymints, murraymints, too good to hurry mints".

They don't write them like that any more.
