We were not allowed,
Barbie (American!)
Clackers (dangerous)
The Price is Right (vulgar & greedy)
Benny Hill (just vulgar)
In general,ITV was frowned upon.
Platform heels (ruin your feet)
To play in the street on a Sunday,(as people want some peace & quiet).
There are probably loads more, but I can't think of any straight off.

plastercine or playdough
stilts
the list is endless

tubismybub · 15/03/2007 23:32

The Cosby Show (a false representation of how life was for black family's at the time -my dad's words by the way but it was fine for me and brother to scare ourselves shitless watching nightmare on elm street)

Molesworth · 15/03/2007 23:33

ITV (not forbidden, but frowned upon)

and - bizarrely - "That's Life" (which I would sneak downstairs to watch in any case - maybe Cyril Fletcher was too risqué?)

White sliced bread

tubismybub · 15/03/2007 23:33

McDonalds and other such fast foods (we only had chinese take away for a treat, not that i was complaining!)

shonaspurtle · 15/03/2007 23:34

Patent leather shoes (not practical - still crave them)
Jelly bag (the ones you had to put a carrier bag inside to keep your stuff dry & stop pens falling out - also not practical)
Cubes of jelly in our lunch boxes (my mum just thought this was mad but my friend got them so obv I thought it madly desirable)

I'm sure I was much more deprived than that. My mum was pretty much unbending if she thought something was stupid/impractical no matter how popular it was. I just know I'm going to react against that with ds and he'll have loads of tat

SparklyGothKat · 15/03/2007 23:36

chewing gum (coz if you swallowed it, your insides would get all stuck together )

tubismybub · 15/03/2007 23:37

weebles (after my sister nearly choked on one)

I'm not sure if it was actually banned, but we never had tomato ketchup! I remember going to my best friends house and she always had it and whenever I asked my mum to get it she never did.

Icecream from the icecream man. ('I'm not buying icecream from him, when there's perfectly good icecream in the freezer!') God, I can hear myself saying it now!!

tubismybub · 15/03/2007 23:47

Mirage - She was only a toddler and she shoved it in her mouth and it got wedged half in half out and cause they are smooth and round my dad couldn't get a firm grip to pull it out.

tubismybub · 15/03/2007 23:48

lemonaid · 16/03/2007 00:35

Barbie/Sindy
ITV most of the time
Saturday morning kids' TV
Grange Hill
Programmes with pop music in (my mother denies this now, but it's TRUE)
Round 'Kojak' style lollipops
Gobstoppers
Chewing/bubble gum

I was the eldest, though... they got more lax with successive children until my sister could do pretty much what she liked.

charlottegeorgiaolivermums · 16/03/2007 00:38

lemonaid
bloody hell want did you watch and play with?

princesscc · 16/03/2007 00:44

I was never allowed to have the latest fashion clothes coz mum could make them just as well! Yeh right! - I had a pair of jeans with write piping sewn on (badly) and the best one was a mini-kilt which looked like a lampshade coz she had just cut a long one down! My friend still reminds me of that one now and I'm 39! Oh the shame!

ScottishThistle · 16/03/2007 00:49

i feel sorry for you all, the joys of having a very young Mum...Nothing was banned!
