We were not allowed,
Barbie (American!)
Clackers (dangerous)
The Price is Right (vulgar & greedy)
Benny Hill (just vulgar)
In general,ITV was frowned upon.
Platform heels (ruin your feet)
To play in the street on a Sunday,(as people want some peace & quiet).
There are probably loads more, but I can't think of any straight off.

Grange Hill
Chewing gum
Straight skirts with a split in them
Peddle pushers
Always wanted 'Mr Frosty' - never allowed that either.

ipanemagirl · 16/03/2007 09:43

pollypeachum, I Claudius was pretty grown up as I remember. sex and violence etc!

Gobbledigook · 16/03/2007 09:44

Oh, we never went in Mum and Dad's bedroom either. Bit strange - my kids are in ours all the time!

expatinscotland · 16/03/2007 09:46

we weren't allowed in my parents' bathroom except in emergencies, such as guests using ours and the guest bathroom.

i loved theirs, because it's huge and smelled like Mama's perfume and had all sorts of grown-up goodies in it, like Fenjal bath foam and Dad's aftershave.

Biglips · 16/03/2007 09:51
  1. We werent allowed to go into my parents bedroom (but i used to sneak in to see who was playing out in the cul-de-sac as my bedroom was at the back)
  2. Werent allowed to watch the news
  3. Used to get told off for swallowing my chewing gum/bubble gum as all my inside will get stuck together!!!! - i still wont do it now!
  4. and no BOYS in my bedroom but girls were allowed in my brothers bedroom - NOT FAIR!!
ipanemagirl · 16/03/2007 09:51

were'nt allowed to have ears pierced til we were 16.

ipanemagirl · 16/03/2007 09:51

My mother hates smoking and eating in the street!

Mercy · 16/03/2007 09:52

I am really taken aback by this thread.

The only things that were forbidden in our house as far as I remember were watching tv when eating - it was a rare treat - and in my case, boyfriends (over-protective father). Oh, and certain tv shows, for example the B&W Minstrel Show which is fair enough.

Maybe I just can't remember.

ArcticRoll · 16/03/2007 09:53

I was the youngest of five children and my mother wasn't strict about anything, was allowed endless fizzy drinks, trashy comics like Jackie and My Guy, non-stop telly,ITV, crappy food like Angel Delight and Dream Topping, wedges shoes for school....
The only things I recall that were banned were those Kojak style lollipops and being allowed in amusement arcades on holiday.
I have reacted by being very strict mother and list of banned things for my dc is very long.

serenity · 16/03/2007 10:03

There were plenty of things we weren't allowed to do, setting the house on fire and stabbing my irritating Dsis with knives being two of them, but I can't think of anything normal we were forbidden to do. I obviously should be treasuring my memories of sitting on the sofa with a sugar sandwich, watching Tiswas on a Saturday morning!

compo · 16/03/2007 10:07

chips
white bread
white sugar
not allowed to pierce ears until 16
no fizzy drinks at home
chocolate bars at home except kit kats, clubs and trios. Never mars bars etc

lemonaid · 16/03/2007 10:11

polly -- now we must secretly have the same parents as my brother and I were also encouraged to watch all of I, Claudius.

fleacircus · 16/03/2007 10:17

Any shoes not fitted at Clarks
The A Team

fleacircus · 16/03/2007 10:18

Oh yes, Enid Blyton.

fleacircus · 16/03/2007 10:19

And Disney. Bless my parents and their middle class aspirations. I grew up in council, by the way.

MrsBadger · 16/03/2007 10:21

so many of those already mentioned - ITV, heels, Barbie (though for some reason Sindy was acceptable), jelly shoes, Plasticine (though Playdough was acceptable), chewing gum, carrying things other than shopping in carrier bags, drinking straight from can or bottle, drinking / eating in the street, milk in bottle on table, talking at normal volume on trains and buses.

actually reading that back I appear to have become my mother.

Enid · 16/03/2007 10:21

nothing

Lizzer · 16/03/2007 10:23

Girls' world fake head styler (so I bought dd one at 4yrs old!)

White bread and real butter (I always have real butter now)

Jules99, did the same for my dp when he told me he never was allowed screwball scramble when he was a child... Er,however now we realise why

tubismybub LOL at microwaved chicken, I'm sure my mum tried that one along with everything else in the M&S micro-cook book....

Blu · 16/03/2007 10:27

A nodding dog on the back shelf of the car
A dog
Denim jeans with turn-ups - and baseball boots
Birds Eye Crispy Cod Balls (expensive ready-made food)
To bounce on the beds
To slam doors - or indeed let go of the door handle before the door had been properly closed
To hurl ourselves backwards into the sofa - had to sit down in a controlled way.
Shout from upstairs to downstairs and vice versa - or even from room to room
Shriek loudly in the garden on a Sunday
Light a campfire or bonfire in the garden when neighbours washing was out

Lizzer · 16/03/2007 10:28

Mrs Badger, Sindy acceptable cos she was a nice girl with a nice house, wholesome hobbies (horse riding) career goals, nice dapper chap of a boyfriend. Drove a scooter and went skiing or camping for fun. And a stylish though conservaive dress sense..
Barbie was a cheap slut who cheated on Ken with action man, had tacky pink house, flash cars and wouldn't wear anything below knee length and had feet shaped to only wear skyscraper heels!

saltire · 16/03/2007 10:32

Not allowed ears pierced until I left school.
I was never allowed to grow my hair - in fact in some school photos, if it wasn't for the fact I'm wearing a skirt you would think I was a boy. I was a bridesmaid for my cousin when i was 10 and wasn't allowed to grow my hair for it, it was very short and looked hideous.
I wasn't allowed to watch Grange Hill.
I was never allowed up later than 8.30 until about 14 years old.
When i got older and stayed up later than my mum, she would go to bed, and then bang on teh ceiling that the tv was too loud. it would be turned down and down until I ended up going to bed because i couldn't hear it.
Wasn't allowed Jackie, or Smash Hits until i started my weekend job

joash · 16/03/2007 10:33

definately itv - although most tv was banned
music
Sweets
friends
smiling & laughing (a definate no-no)
new clothes
new toys
and a period where I wasn't allowed outside for almosttwo years (and that included school)...
And on that seemingly miserable note ... off to get GS from nursery!!!

Enid · 16/03/2007 10:36

really nothing

I cannot think of anything that was banned

MrsBadger · 16/03/2007 10:38

I think it was just you never wanted to do the things that were banned so you never found out that they were...

LucyJones · 16/03/2007 10:39

Why would Enid Blyton be banned?
