We were not allowed,
Barbie (American!)
Clackers (dangerous)
The Price is Right (vulgar & greedy)
Benny Hill (just vulgar)
In general,ITV was frowned upon.
Platform heels (ruin your feet)
To play in the street on a Sunday,(as people want some peace & quiet).
There are probably loads more, but I can't think of any straight off.

OP posts:
whoopsfallenoveragain · 16/03/2007 01:22

earlgrey · 16/03/2007 05:26

Not exactly a child - around 16 or so, but when I went to visit Dad in Italy, I was not allowed:

To wear jeans (the height of 80s chavness, for him, to be seen wearing them in Italy, even though everyone else was

A lighter to light a cigarette, it had to be matches (although strangely smoking a fag in itself was OK

A cappucino after 11.00am. He would shift uncomfortably in the cafe chair and say 'No, it's too late now'

deaconblue · 16/03/2007 08:21

Watching ITV (mum said it was common LOL)

mirage, thank goodness I'm not the only one not allowed to eat in the street or while walking anywhere. Long discussion on this subject with nappyaddict on the sausage roll thread yesterday. LOL

deaconblue · 16/03/2007 08:25

and I desperately wanted the jelly bag and jelly shoes. No chance as there was no Clarks alternative

fryalot · 16/03/2007 08:27

Eating in the street
Any American TV show (Except Hill Street Blues coz my dad liked that)
Coming home before we said we were going to
Chewing gum
Playing music any louder than '3' on the brand new 'hi-fi' system
Having boys in my bedroom/any room with a closed door.

booge · 16/03/2007 08:27

Chewing gum, pierced ears, high heels and going to see Grease at the cinema.

kiwinat · 16/03/2007 08:29
  1. Getting dirty
  2. Fashionable clothes
  3. Tom Boyish activities (see 1)
giddyfeet · 16/03/2007 08:31

Glad to see I wasn't the only one (although it felt like it at the time) but I wasn't allowed

a cabbage patch doll (my mum said they were too ugly lol)
grange hill (my dad thought it instilled bad morals lol)

FrannyandZooey · 16/03/2007 08:33

school shoes other than Clarks

to go into my parents' bed at night, ever

to eat off our laps

Tortington · 16/03/2007 08:33

asking for money - rude
askng for anything - rude

everything was rude.

good manners was required at all times. we lived in a community - not an estate - a proper old fashioned community. i couldnt fart wrong without my mum knowing.

i was seen as some kind of unfortunate golden child. dad dead everyone looking at me i was expected to behave properly at all times.

chopchopbusybusy · 16/03/2007 08:47

1.ITV - amazed to see it mentioned so many times on this thread, I thought we were the only ones.

  1. Denim jackets. My DDs now have a fine collection of denim jackets which I like them to wear when visiting gran
  2. Any clothes from what my mum called "boutiques". In her eyes anywhere except C & A was a boutique
3sEnough · 16/03/2007 08:48

Orange squash!! Having said that I loathe it in any case - v strange child.

filthymindedvixen · 16/03/2007 08:59

Angel delight (common) Of course, I secretly lust after it now

Grange Hill (common children who didn't speak proper)

Forbidden by my father
Girl's magazines - comics such as Twinkle, Judy, Tracey etc fine. Jackie, Patches Blue Jeans - the tools of the devil filled with sex....

Tv during the day - even Sat mornings were frowned upon. Twas a slippery slope - watching tv during the day would surely contribute to me becoming a (common) layabout filling the world full of children out of wedlock and living off the dole....

Kenny Everett - ''an odious little queer'' according to my charming father

Sleeping in my mum's bed when i was poorly

Cabbage patch dolls, Barbie, Girls World, make up, ra-ra skirts, boys in my bedroom (at age 9 or 10!!),any children's book written after 1950..

And many of the other things on your lists - peirced ears, jelly shoes, any shoes other than Clarks ec etc

colditz · 16/03/2007 08:59

Bought cooked food of any description, bar chippy chips.

High heeled shoes

Being noisy in the garden

To sit on Dad's chair - we used to be turfed out of it even if every other seat was empty.

Complaining of hunger while visiting our friends WOW that was a biggie!

Grange Hill (yet strangely was allowed to watch the Young Ones!)

To walk around the house in a top and no bra - er, I was 14, they were practically sprung, as if you could even tell when I took it off!

Any clothes that were remotely feminine or fashionable. She really would have prefered 3 boys, I think.

To have an 'attitude'. Whatever.

BikeBug · 16/03/2007 09:00

ITV (again!), especially Tiswas
Curly reusable drinking straws because they make your cup of Vimto fall over and soak the carpet
milk in a bottle on the breakfast table - it always had to be in a jug!

colditz · 16/03/2007 09:01

Oh I had forgotton about the strange ban on magazines! My dad took Just Seventeen off me, as he said "It's just Seventeen, not Just Fifteen!"

LOL

Bucketsofdynomite · 16/03/2007 09:02

Blackcurrant squash for staining reasons. I now buy it by the gallon because I'm far less houseproud than my mum.
And my dad used to go nuts if we whipped up our ice cream in the bowl and drank it. Don't really see the big deal there.

deaconblue · 16/03/2007 09:03

oh no vixen, my mum will faint with shame when I tell her angel delight was common, she thought it was posh!

MerryMarigold · 16/03/2007 09:03

whingeing - 'do you want something to REALLY cry about?'

ear piercing till 18 - caved in at 11 tho'!

any fruit from South Africa (this was early - mid 80's)

filthymindedvixen · 16/03/2007 09:04

god,yes colditz - forgot about just 17...my mum smuggled some in (there was Mizz as well!) for me after a really bad bout of flu (proper 14 days in bed, halluciantions and weight loss jobby) and dear Father went ballistic. I was 16 IIRC...

MerryMarigold · 16/03/2007 09:11

linked to the 'no chewing gum', weren't allowed those 2-ball Screwball icecreams with the chewing gum in the middle EVEN ON HOLIDAY!

malaleche · 16/03/2007 09:12

when i was wee (we're talking about 30 yrs ago here) the swings in our local park were unhooked from the frame and taken down on sundays....
don't remember anything in particular being forbidden in our house except the usual:

  • don't hang smaller sibings out the windows by their ankles
  • don't run up and down the stairs wielding knives spoiling objects of beauty was taken very personally by my mum...
ellieandhattie · 16/03/2007 09:13
