I have to admit to reading one or two discworld books and not feeling the love that others do - but I was impressed with his openess about his alzheimers and that he made a world that people can live in when they have problems with this one - for that I admire him immensley. By all accounts he was a generous man who gave a lot of his time to people who loved his work - it is very sad that he has passed away - but he has left a lot of joy in the world and that is a remarkable thing.

Just saw this on FB.

Terry Pratchett has died
Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 13/03/2015 09:32

AbCdEfGh123 His daughter Rhianna wrote them

TheArchchancellorsHat · 13/03/2015 09:38

Also wanted to share final track from Steeleye Span's Wintersmith album.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/03/2015 09:43

That's lovely. I'm crying again now.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 13/03/2015 09:47

Yep, I really shouldn't be reading this at work (ahem)...definitely something in my eye....again...

Jux · 13/03/2015 09:53

Snapespeare, your post is lovely. It shows how much he gave to so so many, and not just fans of his books.

TheArchchancellorsHat, that pic is the thing that set me off. No accounting for folk is there? There I am not crying over anything posted until I saw that pic. Thanks

TheAssassinsGuild · 13/03/2015 10:03

That picture set me off again too.

MrsRosyPalm · 13/03/2015 10:08

I've NC too. That pic with Binky's irritated something in my eye.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/03/2015 10:25

I can't see it. :( It just goes to the video and tells me it's not available, presumably because I'm in the wrong country.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 13/03/2015 10:27

Who wrote those final tweets?

His daughter typed them, but it's clear Terry Pratchett had a massive amount of say in what he wanted done and said, it's very him.

I read something online today, suggesting that Sir Terry's daughter is going to take over the Discworld authorship. I really hope this is true.

She's co-owned the characters & concepts for a while, i believe she set up the company Narrativia with her dad, which deals the licensing rights.

I'm not sure whether that means she will write new books, or continue just managing the "discworld" property. She has been invovled in a couple of TV adaptations over the last few years.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2015 11:54

A bit of serendipity I think STP might have liked - the two charity leaflets in the bit of junk mail which comes with New Scientist if you have a mailed subscription were Alzheimers Research and The Campaign for Dignity in Dying (which includes some of his thoughts and a photo). I suspect the Venn diagram of TP fans and NS readers has quite a large intersection so this may be quite helpful timing for those charities. Usually I chuck all the leaflets in the recycling but today....

SirWilliamBluntInstrument · 13/03/2015 12:05

That would be terrific, STD. I do hope so.

LondonMontessoriTutor · 13/03/2015 12:09

RIP to a talented writer whose mind knew no bound (not even the galaxy's) - Wink.

Bogeyface · 13/03/2015 12:18

There was a suggestion when he was first diagnosed that Rhianna would eventually take over the writing, but it was denied at the time.

Personally I dont think it would be the same.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2015 12:20

Personally I dont think it would be the same.

I agree.

Whilst I still enjoy the Pern books, Todd McCaffrey isn't his mother. I worry that this would go the same way.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 13/03/2015 12:22

I have mixed feeling about new discworld books written by someone else, even his daughter.

I'd feel better if the books stopped with Terry, Rhianna could continue the Discworld stories in another medium, graphic novels, TV series or whatever, but the novels should really end with him.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/03/2015 12:51

Oh duh, I can see the Binky picture of course. Just not the video link.

I wouldn't mind Rhianna writing about Discworld if she introduced new characters, where the "voice" wouldn't be so noticeably different; but it wouldn't feel "right" if she wrote about characters we already know, IYSWIM; any difference would be too jarring.

But even if it only means bringing more of STP's work into different media, then more power to her elbow.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2015 12:54

Perhaps she could move to Sto Lat...

Todd's Pern books moved to a different time period so the characters were different which helped.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/03/2015 13:13

A friend has just posted this link to - I hope it will help cheer you all up a bit.

Idontseeanydragons · 13/03/2015 13:21

I read that his daughter is involved with a possible series adaptation of the Nightwatch books. That was a while ago though, nothing's been said since that I've seen.
