It's unfortunate that I'm horribly, horribly allergic to lilac. Love the colour, though. And my posts on mumsnet, to my eyes are and always have been wearing lilac.

KNitter might remember the Pratchghan, btw

Wow Cooroo imagine if you still had it. What a fantastic piece of literary treasure. What a lovely story. Smile

honeysucklejasmine · 12/03/2015 23:46

We had this as a reading at our wedding:

'Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.'

Cooroo · 12/03/2015 23:51

I kept it for years, sold it 10 years ago to help pay for a house move, for an embarrassing amount of money. Still feel a little sad but I sold it to Terry's agent and former publisher, so I know where it is!

Anyone else think that the 25th of May should be Lilac Day, to raise funds for The Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) in memory of Sir Pterry?

Marie Curie have daffodils, RICE could have Lilac.

SolidGoldBrass · 13/03/2015 00:21

I shall look for some lilac tomorrow, as well.
I met him years ago, at a bookshop opening party. He admired my hair (which was green at the time) and said I looked like a dryad.

I, personally think that it should always be the 12th of March.

Bogeyface · 13/03/2015 01:40

I would agree but he made 25th May Lilac Day and lilac isnt around until late Spring.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 13/03/2015 02:01

OK, then I'll bow to the majority, then.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/03/2015 05:05

25th May? Why not? Nice idea.

I read that long passage put up by LadyFlumpalot and then Catthief and it set me right off. Proper rolling tears, the lot. Except now it's mid afternoon and everyone is around me and giving me strange looks - thankfully they're not asking me what's wrong.

Oh how I wish he had a card that said "I ATEN'T DEAD" on it. Thanks

Ook

That's made the tears flow this morning.

Thank STP for this thread and all you lot. No one in RL with me shares the love of STP and his pen.

Can someone please tell me more about the lilac day?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/03/2015 06:38

Hope you're on FB, LittleEsme, for the first link. There's a beautiful poem on there.

Just in case people aren't on FB:
Written by [–]Poemforyour_sprog

The sun goes down upon the Ankh,
And slowly, softly fades -
Across the Drum; the Royal Bank;
The River-Gate; the Shades.
A stony circle's closed to elves;
And here, where lines are blurred,
Between the stacks of books on shelves,
A quiet 'Ook' is heard.

A copper steps the city-street
On paths he's often passed;
The final march; the final beat;
The time to rest at last.

He gives his badge a final shine,
And sadly shakes his head -
While Granny lies beneath a sign
That says: 'I aten't dead.'

The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams;
It's now. The time's at hand.
For where it's always night, it seems,
A timer clears of sand.

And so it is that Death arrives,
When all the time has gone...
But dreams endure, and hope survives,
And Discworld carries on.

MrsPurchase · 13/03/2015 07:30

Thumb that's lovely

Apparently he has one last Discworld book to be released, The shepards Crown.
I wonder if he did an Agatha Christie and wrote it a few years ago with the intention of it bookending the series after he passed?

Wailywailywaily · 13/03/2015 07:52

I'm late to this thread. Weeping as I type.
I have not name changed, for once my nn is supposed to be sad Sad

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 13/03/2015 08:22

Yes, I saw on Paul Kirby's page that he'd done the artwork for the last book, a Tiffany Aching of course, The Shepherd's Crown. Still can't quite believe it will be the last one. :(
No more Granny, no more Vimes, no more Carrot or Angua.

Beautiful poem, thank you.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2015 09:12

I had a dream last night - a bunch of lilac was there for some reason and I was picking out a sprig to wear. Not at all my usual style to go having 'meaningful' dreams.

ChiwetelFan · 13/03/2015 09:22

That poem has just set me off again................
