Naming a rose after Aillidh?

chipmonkey · 11/07/2012 01:00

Apologies if anyone has already thought of this but there is a company which will name a rose after a person. It costs £150. I was thinking if expat liked the idea that maybe some of us could club together and get it done? What do people think?

Hi Expat, I'm sending un-MN hugs your way x

TodaysAGoodDay · 16/07/2012 20:41

P.S Chipmonkey I would love to contribute towards the rose name.

BonkeyMollocks · 16/07/2012 20:42

Expat, hugs and thoughts for you and your family.

So true chipmonkey.

LostInWales · 17/07/2012 08:07

chipmonkey this is a lovely idea. I'm good at organising so if there is anything you would like help with please let me know, otherwise I will lurk about here and see what I can do to help.

Do they have orange roses?

WheresMyCow · 17/07/2012 10:09

I'm in too...it will be such a lasting legacy for Aillidh and very approriate for next July.

chipmonkey · 17/07/2012 11:39

Actually, they do breed orange roses although Aillidh loved pink. The colour will be up to expat and her dh.Smile

Oh and Lost, so far there isn't too much organising but I may shout out for you at some stage!

Can anyone keep a list of names in case anyone loses the thread, i am terrible for not being able to find threads again.

LostInWales · 17/07/2012 13:42

I've c&p'd all the names into a word document lunar1, I'll try to keep it updated just in case but I can't imagine MN will let us lose a thread like this.

Hope this is ok chipmonkey, it's that almost selfish need to feel like you are doing something that might one day be a little bit of help and relief to her family IYSWIM.

chipmonkey · 17/07/2012 14:02

That's great, Wales!Smile Can I ask, are you in the FB group In Memory of Aillidh as there are a few people there who would like to contribute?
But some people will be in both groups so we may need to make sure that we don't have people down twice!

bradbourne · 17/07/2012 14:10

I would gladly contribute towards this - a lovely idea, I think.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 17/07/2012 14:12

I'd also love to contribute

LostInWales · 17/07/2012 14:23

Yes I am, I'll pootle over there and get their names too. Names down twice might be interesting, I haven't got a clue who is who on FB/MN crossovers. Even on my own page Blush

chipmonkey · 17/07/2012 16:54

Also got a "reply" back from Harkness's to say that Mr Harkness is away ( Jeez, hopefully if I post that, no-one will go over and rob his house or something!Confused) but that he will get in touch when he is back.

Yeah - I have a Wi-Fi signal! (currently camping in southern Oregon)
Just wanted to pop in and see if there's been any progress.

Question - not sure the signal will hold out long enough for me to get on FB - is the In Memory Of Ailidh FB group private or public? If private, would someone pm me so I can give you my RL name and ask for an I custom? Thank you Thanks.

Jacksmania · 17/07/2012 21:31

I custom WTF - an invitation!!!!!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/07/2012 22:47

I'm in too - tell me where and when

MrsKwazii · 18/07/2012 14:15

Chip this is a wonderful idea, count me in too. C&K Jones are also a great rose company who grow quite a few charity-linked roses. May be worth contacting them too? www.jonestherose.co.uk/

chipmonkey · 18/07/2012 15:57

Thanks, MrsK. All these rose growers I knew nothiing about till now!

also folks, what's the best way of collecting money in these situations? Dh and I share a paypal account as we share a visa card. I think in the dim and distant past, I may have set up a paypal account of my own only to discover that I would also need a separate visa card to make payments. Could that account be used? Or would it cause hassle if I tried to pay money out of it to the rose company.
Would it be better to set up a Justgiving account? The only downside that I can see to that is that justgiving take a percentage of the donations.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 18/07/2012 18:05

I think, and could be very wrong, that paying by Paypal as a 'gift' is free if you are paying from a Paypal balance or debit card, there's a fee if you pay by credit card.

The rose company could then raise an invoice on Paypal for you to then pay from the balance (probably a fee) or you could withdraw the money (again, think there's a fee) into your bank account and then send a cheque. Hopefully someone who's done this recently can correct the bits I've got wrong. Have no idea about Just Giving.

Have Cockers come up with a price ? I'm really liking that there are a fair few plants which benefit charities, has made me think more carefully about which ones I buy in future.

chipmonkey · 18/07/2012 18:19

No, no price yet!
Will email again. or phone if no joy with that!

OP posts:
WynkenBlynkenandNod · 18/07/2012 18:22

They're keeping that one close to their chest, makes you wonder if you'll need to sit down when you do finally get the price !

chipmonkey · 18/07/2012 18:31

Will have the smelling salts ready!
