Naming a rose after Aillidh?

chipmonkey · 11/07/2012 01:00

Apologies if anyone has already thought of this but there is a company which will name a rose after a person. It costs £150. I was thinking if expat liked the idea that maybe some of us could club together and get it done? What do people think?

i would love to donate, please let me know how.

chipmonkey · 19/07/2012 19:44

I will do, just as soon as I figure it out, MABS!

Shock Jones the rose have gotten back to me and quoted £4000 + VAT to name the rose!
Now they do have roses which are as yet unnamed and they say they have already been tested for 3-5 years so are fairly well equipped to deal with harsh weather.
Still that is steep, isn't it? Still no reply from Cockers.

Will be interesting to see what the other nurseries come back with. Maybe that's the going rate for them though?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 19/07/2012 21:27

Think I saw something about from 1k plus VAT on Cockers somewhere.

chipmonkey · 19/07/2012 22:25

I saw that too, Wynken. It would be nice if they would get back to me and confirm.

Have also enquired from Dickson Roses in Northern Ireland.

Would definitely contribute to the naming if there were a charity donation with each sale.

What a lovely idea, chipmonkey.

Jacksmania · 20/07/2012 23:43

Excellent, still on my Threads I'm On :)

We're almost back to civilisation.

I may have missed it... have you heard from Expat as to what colour she'd like?
I think orange is for Leukaemia Research.

Sossiges · 21/07/2012 11:51

Count me in too, chipmonkey, brilliant idea.
Hi expat ((((()))))

edam · 21/07/2012 11:58

That's a very moving idea.

I wonder whether MN/MNers could get one planted somewhere of significance to Expat and Aillidh?

chipmonkey · 22/07/2012 15:35

Right. Dickson's have got back to me and said 5000- 10000 and the 5000 would only be for sale in their own nursery. Cockers have so far been the most reasaonably priced. May pootle over to gardening and ask those ladies if they know anything.

Count me in please.

CiderwithBuda · 22/07/2012 15:54

Count me in too please. What a lovely idea.

I've emailed someone from school. She said on Friday that she emailed a rose breeder for donations to the PTA plant sale next year and he's come back offering an amazing number of plants and immediately I thought they would be good to approach. She couldn't remember the name at the time though so have asked if she'll look it up. Might just be a nursery rather than a breeder, will see when she comes back to me.

Jacksmania · 23/07/2012 01:57

I don't know if a thread called Humph's Happy Horti-Cult is still running, will look in a mo, but IMO, if you post a question in Gardening, what those ladies (and gentlemen of course) don't know about gardening isn't worth knowing.

CakeistheAnswer · 23/07/2012 08:31

I've only just caught up with this thread but if the idea turns out to be feasible, I'd like to contribute.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 24/07/2012 13:01

I've found another one, Gandy's

expatinscotland · 27/07/2012 23:39

I'm definitely in! :)

blondieminx · 29/07/2012 09:22

Lovely idea, would like to contribute also.

Have you approached this rose grower yet? Cants of Colchester
