Naming a rose after Aillidh?

Apologies if anyone has already thought of this but there is a company which will name a rose after a person. It costs £150. I was thinking if expat liked the idea that maybe some of us could club together and get it done? What do people think?

I think it's a lovely idea.

I know it's the done thing to give money to a relevant charity, but I think a tribute that is physically there to be seen as it grows is a beautiful act of remembrance too. Along side, obviously.

It's a lovely idea...also, you can get people kits wherer they can grow their own rose as well as registering it with a particular name.

My friend got me one of these when my mum died......it took me a good long while to feel ready but when I felt better I started growing the seedlings...it gives me great pleasure to be nurturing these flowers and seeing them grow........and they will also be registered after my mum....

Amazon do them - might be nice for Ex Pat and her kids to sow these seeds together and see them grow?

The name a star thing is a con, the companies selling them do not have the right to give a star a particular name. Anyone can name a star whatever they want, but it won't be its official name. If you want to name a star then easier to just choose one, name it and save the £25 fee. Sorry!

Whatabout the Woodland Trust.. you can plant trees in someone's name, and they are definitely legit.. as I recall you can choose which area of woodland to plant in too

The tree planting might also be a runner.
Probably best to check with the expat family and see what they would like.

I asked giraffes and she thinks it's a lovely idea and the name "Aillidh" is available. I checked with the rose-naming people. I may wait a little while and then just ask expat about colours etc.

Could you also link to the company? I think there will be many garden-obsessed MNers who might want to buy an Ailidh rose.

I would love one but I'm guessing shipping plants internationally is not allowed :(

I'm in if go ahead is given. But was just wondering whether it might be worth approaching a few of the specialist rose breeders to see if they would be prepared to help with this and name a rose in memory of Aillidh, to sell with a percentage to a Leukemia charity. Appreciate might not be appropriate or possible to do, but thought just occurred to me when I read this.

I would donate to that. I would buy the rose too. I have been so touched by brave little Aillidh and I would think of her when the rose was in flower. It is rose season now, so she would be remembered every year at the time she went. When was her birthday?

Wynken, that sounds like a lovely idea. Now, the only thing is, who knows about rose breeders? I tend to buy David Austen roses. Are they the sort of people you mean?

I have now emailed David Austin and asked if they would consider naming a rose after Aillidh and allowing a portion of the proceeds to go to the Anthony Nolan trust.
Probably not a good time to email as it's the weekend but hopefully someone will reply soon.

Yes I think so Chipmonkey. Maybe one of the smaller ones might be prepared to look at doing something, I had a very quick google earlier and found these people in Aberdeen. It's is massively more expensive than what you were suggesting originally but I wonder if they, or someone like them, would be prepared to do it cheaper, then a donation to Anthony Nolan (or another charity ).

Aillidh touched a lot of peoples' lives and so many people know children and adults affected by Leukemia and Lymphoma that potentially a lot of people might be interested and it would make it something a Rose breeder might consider.
