Ds got "New Math" on YouTube played in class one day and his teacher, who hadn't heard it, was delighted
Tom Lehrer and Bob Newhart are partly responsible for dh and I getting together...

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 20/10/2008 17:43

Bob Newhart explaining to a dim-un how to smoke still makes me laugh even though I have heard it so many times ...

The Empire State building security guard on shift when King Kong turns up is just fab

JackieNoHead - I sang the song that you quoted - The Masochism Tango - as part of my Finals Recital - I am a singer and read music at University.

It is a very funny song, but was almost funnier watching the audience, who were expecting an utterly serious set of songs/arias, and who had already sat through 14 minutes of medieval latin (my opener), and who all looked as if they didn't know if they were ALLOWED to laugh - lolol!

I wish my memory was good enough to learn the Elements.

And what about Flanders and Swann? My dad used to sing lots of their songs to my sister and I, and I still love them. And they have a song for the teachers here too - The First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics - to this day, it's the only bit of physics that I can remember!

solidgoldskullonastick · 20/10/2008 18:31

Another fan here. Someone once bought me the Collected Works of on cassette, must hunt them out and have a giggle.

policywonk · 20/10/2008 18:52

Funnily enough, they played a bit of 'Be Prepared' on Today this morning (because the Scouts have just announced they'll be incorporating some sex education into their sessions).

Mercy · 20/10/2008 18:58

I don't know him but my Mum has an old record of his (very heavy black round shaped thing with part of the sleeve cover missing)

It may even be a 78

[very tenuous interest]

TskullsScreaming · 20/10/2008 20:36

Blimey Bob Newhart mentioned as well. Too much joy on one thread...

jeee · 20/10/2008 20:39

I always liked putting my white sheet on again to go back to dear old dixie.

Ah yes... DH and I bonded over a shared love of Tom Lehrer on our first ever date [misty eyed emoticon]. Love Bob Newhart too.

My sister's class in Science at the start of secondary school were asked to name an element. "Antimony", she piped up. "Er... yes..." said v confused looking science teacher who clearly hadn't been expecting that as an answer (not sure why; would have expected Chemistry teachers to all be familiar with the Elements song).

suzywong · 21/10/2008 11:30

oh yes, my mum played him all the time

"and when he found what he had done he poked his eyes out one by one"

Did you know there was a book of the scores illustrated by Ronald Searle?

PortAndDemon · 21/10/2008 11:30
PortAndDemon · 21/10/2008 11:39

Actually, we signed the register at our wedding to an instrumental of "She's My Girl".

suzywong · 21/10/2008 12:47

oh very classy, Port

" and if I 'm in luck, it's broiled hockey puck!"

I cannot believe how I can remember these lyrics after 20 years. Surely I should be using that portion of my brain for some higher purpose

orinocowitch · 21/10/2008 12:52

love him and have said book that Suzywong mentions - but it is missing some of my favourites (can't remember all of which now as nowhere near the book but know that the American army boys song isn't in it, and I don't think the "we will all go together when we go" song is either)

love poisoning pigeons in the park, masochism tango and we will all go together most I think - but it's close!

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 21/10/2008 14:13

oh my dad would love an illustrated Tom Lehrer, esp Ronald Searle ( another passion is the Molesworth books)
