There is a Collected Molesworth which is still available and, according to this Ronald Searle blog, has an introduction by Philip Hensher no less.

As for Molesworth's attractions, I don't think that (for me at least) it's about his unorthodox spelling. What I love is his world-weary and jaundiced descriptions of his life. Having been a dutiful conformist all my life, I enjoy the subversion!

Come on over to the Molesworth thread .... we're competing for the prize for rafia work.

I have the very book of which you speak in front of me MadBad - gave it to ds last Christmas

oh, love this thread! Am also a firm Molesworth fan, have all his books from ages ago (DH can't for the life of him understand why I have kept my children's books )

And yes, that line from Bright College Days always has me in bits!

Also not quite sure about the Armstrong and Miller version of Flanders and Swan but absolutely love their modern take on WWII fighter pilots!

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 21:27

Or how about the deluxe version

Marina · 22/10/2008 21:32

We bought that edition for ds JackieNo
He is a fellow traveller with his ancient mum and dad - Molesworth, Tom Lehrer, Jennings etc

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 21:33

And by coincidence, I spotted Ronald Searle Christmas cards and wrapping paper in a junk mail catalogue today.

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 21:34

Marina - I'm very of your DS. Might have to invest .

And if you've got tons of cash to spare, how about a limited edition Searle lithograph?

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 21:37

...some people say it's irrelevant. It's not irrelevant - it's a hippopotamus!

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 21:46

DH often sings the Gasman Cometh, and the one with the months of the year (January brings the snow, makes your feet and fingers glow, etc) to DD and DS - DD is starting to know them quite well now.

sunnygirl1412 · 22/10/2008 23:00

Thank-you so much for the Lego Gasman Cometh, Cauldronfrau - I'm wiping away tears of mirth.

One of my favourites is actually a monologue called Tried by the Centre Court, about a Ladies third round match at Wimbledon (before the introduction of the tiebreak rule).

Jackie - does your dh know P* P B B D** (or Pee Po Belly Bum Drawers) - their attempt to write a song that the Official Censor would disapprove of! My boys loved it.

Oh - and I wonder if anyone has done a Lego version of the Masochism Tango?

PortAndDemon · 22/10/2008 23:24

Oooh, must try Flanders and Swann on DS... I keep concluding that he's not old enough for Tom Lehrer yet, but some of F&S may be just the ticket...

Kathyis6incheshigh · 23/10/2008 10:11

Oh that Lego gasman is great.

Must get cds of all the Flanders and Swann stuff - I just have it on tape and need to get dcs listening to it in the car. Except dd protests when I sing along to anything that is a man singing ('You can't sing that mummy! It's a boys' song!' )

Agree about Armstrong and Miller - their WW2 airmen is fabulous, but I have mixed feelings about their Flanders and Swann - it's lovely that they do a homage to F&S but it's not actually that funny, specially not funny enough to repeat in every episode (unlike the airmen).

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 23/10/2008 10:13

it's funny that my dad never really took to Flanders and Swann though had all the Tom Lehrer records, consequently I don't know F and S really...
