Gosh! Haven't heard any TL for years (must have missed Be Prepared on Today). Recently threw all my cassettes away so off to look on iTunes ....

... and did somebody mention Molesworth? He is my hero.

Poledra · 22/10/2008 09:49

I love Tom Lehrer. My Dad can remember listening to bootleg copies of his stuff in the late Fifties when it first made it over to the UK. Can also remember, when I was a teenager, we were asked to help entertain some colleagues of family friends. These colleagues were from the Deep South, and I was standing behind my father quietly humming
'Take me back to Dixie, take me back to dear ol' Dixie, it's the only li'l' ol' place for li'l' ol' me...' Poor dad nearly exploded trying not to laugh

Flightattendant2 · 22/10/2008 09:56

'..or a matching pen and pencil
Just the thing I need
How nice'

I love the Christmas one. Dad used to play the LP when we were kids - I still have it.

Have just had a little spree on iTunes, but, alas, Vatican Rag wasn't available (except as the Tomfoolery soundtrack). MartianBishop has already quoted my favourite lyric

Then a guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.

Thank you for this thread. Happy memories!

mistlethrush · 22/10/2008 10:05

Yes, we've got the score with Ronald Searle illustrations - and all the songs!

I love poisoning pigeons too. And vatican rag. Page turned for a show at Uni - lost touch until I met dh when I was reintroduced.

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 10:19

this is when I love mumsnet so much- there are people who love Tom Lehrer and Molesworth

Morticia - I find that if you insert 'as any fule kno' into any written communication, it forces the Molesworth fans to declare themselves (anyone else assumes you've lost the spellchecker).

Flightattendant2 · 22/10/2008 10:37

I've never dared!!!

We have a friend whose child resembles Fotherington Thomas and I cannot bring myself to ask her if she has read it.

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 12:10

it's that warm glow of recognition and the feeling that the poster must be an uterly nice person...chiz

I once sang some Lehrer songs in a school recital (including the elements) as well as Flanders and Swann.

The DC are being "indoctrinated" with Flanders & Swann and I'll bring them round to Mr Lehrer once they're old enough....

My dad has a couple of Bob Newhart 45's, must dig those out.

Anyone come across PDQ Bach? Listen to this - it's eternally etched on my memory!

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 12:49

argh,can't download it..

Bringing up your kids with Tom Lehrer, i thought i was the only one! Now I know why I keep coming back to MN.

Walks in the park and pretending to hunt, with the dds usually contained "..maybe we'll do in ,
a squirrel,or two while..(we're poisoning pedgeons in the park).
Now ones a teen its all about "slipping down the razorblade of life" and explaining the Masochism tango!

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 13:43

I just remembered the other comedy record my parents had - not this exact one, but Peter Sellers comedy songs and sketches. Auntie Rotter? And 'She loves you', inspired by Dr Strangelove. And 'A hard day's night'. And the partly political broadcast. Not to mention, 'Balham, gateway to the south'.

MadBadandWieldingAnAxe · 22/10/2008 13:50

Flight attendant - my child is Nigel Moelsworth reborn as a girl. One of her pals is Fotherington Thomas in female form. Yet they are firm friends.

Have started a Nigel Molesworth appreciation thread (under 'children's books', chiz, as I couldn't find a better home) so please stop by.

MadBadandWieldingAnAxe · 22/10/2008 13:53

Molesworth, chiz.

As my pater would say, poobumbellybuttondrawers (which I believe is a misquotation from the Flanders and Swann Rude Song).

procrastinatingparent · 22/10/2008 13:55

'My pulse will be quickening, with each drop of Strychnine...'

Dh and I often find different things funny, but we both love Tom Lehrer.

MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 14:59

do you like the Armstrong and Miller Flanders and Swan-alikes ?

OP posts:
MorticiaAnnSpookington · 22/10/2008 15:01

Armstrong and Miller

OP posts:
Flightattendant2 · 22/10/2008 17:53

thankyou Madbad

I will indeed stop by

Do you think our sudden rekindling of the molesworth love is to do with the lack of bad spelling evident in these here parts of late?

Naming no names!

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 22/10/2008 18:36

I'm not quite sure about the Armstrong and Miller ones - sometimes quite funny, but sometimes too much.

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 18:50

I always play the Periodic Table song when I start off an Elements topic. I haven't seen the OP's one before but I really like it. I am sending the link to my school account

Thank you.

policywonk · 22/10/2008 18:54

Ah, 'sliding down the razor blade of life'. I remember my mother laughing so hard at that one that she had to turn the record off.

madlentileater · 22/10/2008 18:56

have not read the whole thread will have to now to find out what the link is between TL and Molesworth, both completely fab, DD2 and I were listening (and singing along) the ther night whilst clearing up after tea, then 'be prepared' was on the radio...
are molesworth books still in print? we only have v ancient copies (from our youth) and on is missing
and do other people get strange looks when you say 'hallo clouds, hallo sky' 'oh go on oh you mite'?
