Great song openings

I've just had my Spotify wrap of 2024 and my most listened to song is Too Shy by Kajagoogoo. Don't judge me!

The reason I listen to it a lot is the opening. I think it's a fab opening. Better than the rest of the song.

Which songs do you think have openings that are awesome and maybe overshadow the rest of the song?

national express-divine comedy. Walk on the wild side-Lou Reed. Fish heads-Barnes and Barnes. However, whilst this is a hardly a song the opening to the Strauss tone poem "Also Spruce Zarathustra" just has to be the most fuck off opening to anything, anytime, anywhere, ever.

Road to Nowhere Talking Heads

I don’t like Mondays - Boomtown Rats

Me & You vs The World - Space

All that she Wants - Ace of Base

Fools Gold - The Stone Roses

I defy anyone with a pulse to hear the opening bars of Jive Talkin and not want to dance. And I don't ordinarily like disco.

I always think the intro is for low key strutting to the (light up) dance floor.

I hate be a pedant but I'm absolutely struck down with the flu which has also included wrecking my back so please let me off 🤢😅
Please remember, @HighburyLass is looking for great intros of songs that might not be so great in their entirety. You are not allowed to choose fully great songs! Thank you. Back to feeling sick as a dog.

I'm ashamed to say this, but the correct answer is the intro to Rockin' All Over The World - Status Quo. The first two bars, and especially when they did it at Live Aid, are the greatest two bars of all time! Rest of the song and their entire catalogue, terrible. But that intro, man!!! 👌🏼

Thank you for reminding me of this! Playing it right now….

HighburyLass · 06/12/2024 08:29

Thanks for all the amazing suggestions!
WinkyTinky I don't mind if I get some great intros with great songs attached! But yes it was the idea of intros which offer so much but fail to deliver quite so much I the body of the song. And on a side note hope you feel better soon 🤒

I've been so busy with work the last couple of days I haven't had chance to listen to most of them but when things calm down I'm going to make a Spotify playlist 😊

For me, the Stones have the top two, with Gimme Shelter and the much less appreciated Monkey Man.

The Stranglers Black and White album has 2 tracks with corking intros. Check out Toiler on the Sea plus Death and Night and Blood first 21 seconds. Have to admit I keep repeating that in the car.
