Great song openings

I've just had my Spotify wrap of 2024 and my most listened to song is Too Shy by Kajagoogoo. Don't judge me!

The reason I listen to it a lot is the opening. I think it's a fab opening. Better than the rest of the song.

Which songs do you think have openings that are awesome and maybe overshadow the rest of the song?

@Fireworknight you're welcome! Bach couldn't write a crescendo because he was writing for keyboard with limited dynamics - he created tension in other ways, through the interplay between the lines of the fugue - the music works along horizontal lines. Maybe he would have done it differently if he'd had access to all the kit that Amy Grant's writers/engineers had!

Thunderstruck by AC/DC, not particularly fussed about the song but the opening is epic!

This is also an excellent song for when running. Especially up a mean hill Confused

Ahhh I love Sam Cooke. Reminds me of my lovely dad who used to sing Wonderful World to me when I was little ❤️

I'm ashamed to say this, but the correct answer is the intro to Rockin' All Over The World - Status Quo. The first two bars, and especially when they did it at Live Aid, are the greatest two bars of all time! Rest of the song and their entire catalogue, terrible. But that intro, man!!! 👌🏼

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 06/12/2024 00:17

I absolutely love Sympathy for the Devil and Gimme Shelter; probably my two favourite Stones tracks. I do think the entire song is brilliant in both cases, though 😂

Pink Floyd have got to be in the running for the 'Best Intros Band' award, that I just made up, and of theirs, I reckon some of the best are Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Goodbye Blue Sky, Time, In The Flesh? and Echoes. Echoes' intro is beaten by the guitar solo towards the end though.

Other great intros but with great songs attached:
Uprising by Muse
Supersonic by Oasis
Lebanon by Human League
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine

Probably the two that most fit the criteria of intro that I love, but with a song that doesn't captivate quite as much:

Plainsong by The Cure
Book of Brilliant Things by Simple Minds

Tittat50 · 06/12/2024 00:49

Love so many of these choices! I have so many but off top of my head

Head over heels - Tears for Fears ( brilliant opening)
I wanna be adored - Stone Roses ( drum intro ahhh)
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunny men
How soon is now - the Smiths ( amazing guitar riff)
Stepping out - Joe Jackson ( gives me chills still)

Tittat50 · 06/12/2024 00:51

Ah can't forget Pink Floyd! Wish you were here.
First song I learnt to play on my guitar 😀 happy place for me.

mollyfolk · 06/12/2024 01:34
