Here we are, a week after Prince suddenly passed away. This is a thread to grieve, share your memories, thoughts, stories, videos and songs.

Let's keep on supporting each other in the name of The Beautiful One.

I'm 47.
I have had my nails purple all week but yours are much cooler Vanessa!

I wake up every morning singing Prince songs in my head. I woke at 4 this morning singing the rap from Alphabet Street and then woke later singing New Position Grin

I think I'm also mourning my youth, Prince reminds me of my late teens /early 20's.

I remember asking 2 friends to go to se Purple Rain at the cinema with me. When we came out the first thing they both said were, "urgh how can you fancy him? "
The concept that I liked the music first seemed alien to them.
Of course I would have climbed him like a tree given half a chance 😈🙈🙉🙊

Steve Parke Photography And Art on Facebook has some great pictures and stories about Prince

Destinysdaughter · 30/04/2016 11:43

Coco 👍!

Here's the NME cover. So beautiful.
Apparently there's a special tribute magazine in WHSmith too.

Yes I went on a search for Prince in WHSmith and found a souvenir tribute magazine, it's called Prince, A Revolutionary Icon. I also accidentally found Paris Match which he is on the font of. I don't speak French but bought it anyway and there's some great photos in it. Just read a wonderful quote from Lady Gaga in NME. I'm not at all religious but I think this is perfect: 'Thank you for sharing your life with us. You found God early. He needed you upstairs to innovate in heaven.'
Any more magazines I should know about? I did already buy OK!

lazarusb · 30/04/2016 12:42

I'm 44 but still 23 when I'm in a Prince mood!
I couldn't find NME when shopping last night - will send dh out to get it later (I would but need to study this afternoon!).

I usually keep my nails neutral for work but am going purple for the weekend. May Day will have to be purple and green...

lottielou7 · 30/04/2016 12:44

I want 'The Gold Experience' but it doesn't seem to be available,

Cocolepew · 30/04/2016 12:46

Bouncy somebody said he's in Grazia magazine too.

BouncyTrouncyFlouncyPouncy · 30/04/2016 13:20

Thanks Coco, I've got Grazia too! Lazarusb, I looked for NME in the shops cos I didn't realise it was free, I found it randomly in a shopping centre! Maybe at stations? And I am still 18 when I listen to Prince!

commutergirl37 · 30/04/2016 13:27

I'll have to get to Smiths this weekend then! Feeling inspired to do something with my nails, but have a 2 year old who's obsessed with Playdoh, so kind of given up on fancy nails at the mo.
I'm 41 (today!). Have distinct memories of getting my parents to play my Prince mix tape in the car and them blanching at Get Off. And my poor mum buying me Lovesexy for Christmas and being at great pains to explain to the shop assistant that she wasn't buying it for herself! She's never got over that album cover and always called Prince 'that funny little man.'
Got New Girl and Sign O the Times queued up for a birthday afternoon treat. Toddler is napping and DH is just going to have to put up with it! 😄

RedCorvette · 30/04/2016 13:36

For once local cinema has come up trumps - Purple Rain on twice a day for the next week! Perth, if anyone wants to go.

The Sign O the times concert is on Sky Arts at 10pm tonight too. There's also an hour-long documentary on iPlayer I really enjoyed.

Love Prince - for so many reasons. His music is just amazing. I love how the lyrics are in fact far filthier than a lot of what's out there now, but don't come with any disrespect for women. He loved women and saw them as equals.

Love him for always having the courage of his convictions. Not playing the media game. Wearing what he wanted. Putting out the material he wanted. Fighting for what he believed in.

Love him for being 5' 2 dressed in heels and spangly clothes and still being the sexiest man ever.

Love all the stories coming out about how funny and also generous he was. www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/7348502/prince-anecdotes-bizarre-weird-funny-janet-jackson-madonna-michael-jackson

Oh and yes - NO comparison with Michael Jackson, whose music I don't hate but it doesn't even come close.

I will miss him Sad. I hope his legacy is handled respectfully. I hope such a beautiful soul didn't suffer too much towards the end.

Also hope Paisley Park does become a museum because I will be first on the plane!

ComputerBlue · 30/04/2016 13:37

Rara here trying out my new name always loved this song and it seemed apt for a mumsnet username! Thanks dornish for the heads up about Sky Arts, can't wait to see that.

BouncyTrouncyFlouncyPouncy · 30/04/2016 13:39

Happy Birthday Commutergirl! I watched New Girl last night, he is very funny in it. I'm also feeling the need to paint my nails purple.

RedCorvette · 30/04/2016 13:53

Also really funny:

BouncyTrouncyFlouncyPouncy · 30/04/2016 14:44

I always loved Michael Jackson and my DCs do too. He was my favourite along with Madonna all through secondary school, I didn't discover Prince until Uni. We recently saw Thriller the show and it was brilliant! However now I realise that MJ completely pales into insignificance when you compare him to Prince, in every way, songwriting, singing, dancing, sexiness. Could you imagine wanting to have sex with MJ? You'd be scared he'd break! But even tho Prince was tiny, he looked really strong and powerful and I could soooo imagine acting out his songs with him Grin
Someone should make a show about his music, I know nobody could sing like him but just hearing his music and being amongst other fans would make for an electrifying atmosphere. We saw We Will Rock You and although nobody could sing like Freddy Mercury it was still amazing.

lazarusb · 30/04/2016 14:52

I think we could all get together and charter a plane to the Paisley Park museum...I wonder whose films and music we could play on the way there and back! We'd have to paint it purple too.

NME is free?! Amazing! I was given a copy a few months ago but thought it was a one-off!

Bouncy I can imagine Prince in the bedroom (or dungeon - whatever takes your fancy) is the stuff of really, really good memories. Off for a cold shower now...Grin

Casey24 · 30/04/2016 15:15

loved knowing what was in Prince's fridge Grinwonder who manny is?

I'm being a terrible parent today. I've spent - I don't know how long - ages watching performances/shows/interviews/stories etc. totally neglecting my poor DD who just doesn't get prince at all unfortunately, mind you, at 11 there's probably too many songs I shouldn't let her listen to Grin

And I'm feeling more sad 'cos I feel I just took it for granted he'd always be here and I'd get the chance to see him again at some point. I don't know why but got a bit emotional watching the Jules Holland show tributes with Gregory Porter singing Purple Rain. It was really touching and a great tribute to him. I've watched the Super Bowl half time show, the rock n roll hall of fame induction, New Girl, interviews, various performances and I'm still so pissed off he's died. You never really know what a good thing is til its gone and this seems like such a cruel way to really get that - for prince to die way too soon.

Im glad this thread is here so I waffle on. I think the one thing he's said which resonates today for me is the bit in New Girl when he says 'I didn't give you enough time to freak out' well that's just how I feel now. I didn't get enough time to freak out over him.

Sad

Happy birthday 🎂 !
Loving the new names and Tensions purple face.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 30/04/2016 17:22

Wasn't the Manny he referred to his 2nd wife Manuela Testolini?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 30/04/2016 17:41

Just picked up the OK magazine and am downloading New Girl. My sadness isn't going away.

Happy birthday Commutergirl!

Cocolepew · 30/04/2016 17:52

Q magazine has a few pages of him and there is a booklet, think its by the Daily Mirror out. Its mostly pictures and looks like its been threw together quickly.

Destinysdaughter · 30/04/2016 18:15

Gosh so many posts! Well I braved the rain today and went into town. Bought the Purple Rain DVD and the tribute mag in WHSmiths! Asked if they had the NME but they didn't. I didn't realise it was free! They didn't have much Prince stuff in HMV, just one CD of hits and Purple Rain CD. Also saw a huge poster of Prince in Oxfam, just popped in there to see if I could get any Prince CDs, was a bit tempted...

I also bought a fab dress in a charity shop! Smile

Wish I lived in Perth but it's a bit far to go to see Purple Rain on a big screen!

And happy birthday! 🎂💐
