Musical Theatre songs for teens?

KatyMac · 10/10/2014 23:17

I'm a bit bored so I thought I'd compile a list of MT songs suitable for teen girls (ie DD), and then I realised I really didn't have a clue Blush

Thoroughly Modern Millie probably has one or two & My Fair Lady and then I get stuck!

Secret love or the black hills of Dakota from calamity jane are easy enough for an alto to sing but can also show good range.

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 20:27

I still think I should be in charge Wink

Well early reports are that she is working very hard & she is applying corrections well, singing is a problem as she has a permanent cold and she is not very good at acting

But she isn't eating as well as she should & she gets home sick on Wednesdays & Sundays

I'm so glad it is going well for her and I dread the time when I am no longer in control too. Grin
I think we spend so long helping them find suitable material and being involved with what they do, it must be hard to have to stop.
I'm sure her teacher knows what he/she is doing though and great that you can trust them.

My dd has decided to audition for the music school this year, not sure about her chances though as they don't take singers until 6th form, not for first instrument anyway.

Pictures - thanks for suggestions, I will have to look more at modern theatre it isn't really her bag but it does good to get out of a comfort zone.
She does like deadwood stage and Black hills, stuff like this.

OP posts:
morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 21:31

I think you should send it and let him/her know how resourceful Mnet posters are Grin

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 21:34

You don't think he/she would be disappointed with how short it is?

The wizard and I - honestly an amazing audition piece.

LeBearPolar · 11/10/2014 21:56

I Cain't Say No from Oklahoma. Such fun to sing and bursting with personality. Or Many a New Day.

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 21:58

Wonderful Day from 7 Brides for 7 Brothers

LeBearPolar · 11/10/2014 22:03

The Night they Invented Champagne - Gigi.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 22:28

Ah, yes wonderful day, I forgot this one. It's one of dd repertoire too, how could I?

What about

I enjoy being a girl
Honey Bun

There's no business like show business

morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 22:33

Oh, does anybody know any G&S that is suitable for younger girls, rather than older maidens. Grin

She has done little Buttercup.

WeAreGroot · 11/10/2014 22:51

I was coming on to suggest looking at some G&S as well Grin

Phoebe Meryll has some fun songs in Yeomen of the Guard. 'When maiden loves she sits and sighs' is a nice one to sing, as is 'Were I thy bride'.

Tessa's song 'When a merry maiden marries' from Gondoliers is a great mezzo piece and can be done as a solo without the little chorus bits in.

'Love is a plaintive song' from Patience, maybe?

Rose's song 'If somebody there chanced to be' from Ruddigore is another young maiden's song.

'The sun whose rays are all ablaze' from The Mikado has already been mentioned, that's another good one.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 23:12

WeAreGroot

Thanks very much, I will have a look.
I'm helping (controlling) at the moment, if she's capable she is whipping through stuff and just asks for more and music isn't cheap. Arghhhhh

I love the Gondoliers. You are genius, and lyrics acceptable, iirc.

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 23:59

More ideas- Practically Perfect from the Mary Poppins stage show or Truly Scrumptious/Toot Sweets/What Do You See (basically any of Truly's songs) from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Theas18 · 12/10/2014 00:10

We've had Matchmaker and sunrise sunset from fiddler for various exams, also one hand one heart from west side story. They suit a young naiive chorister sound ( especially matchmaker if she can capture the excitement) .

Theas18 · 12/10/2014 00:15

And how could I forget the fab numbers from me and my girl that DS did at school a couple if years ago -
If stGe has a decent mockney there is a beautiful number "once you loose your heart" or the hilarious " thinking if no one but me"

Ferguson · 12/10/2014 13:24

(I been looking at your 'profile' - are those pictures you, or DD ??)

I won't offer any specific titles, but forty years ago playing drums, in Old Time Music Hall, I met Maria Friedman, whose mother was our pianist.

So, Maria Friedman's CDs could provide a wealth of unusual quality songs. And she is also directing now.

(I may have told you some of this before - if so, I apologise.)

KatyMac · 12/10/2014 15:17

They are DD (if you were talking to me Wink)

She is a poppet - have you seen any of her videos, I've put them on MN before

KatyMac · 12/10/2014 15:43

I sent you a PM Ferguson & I also sent one to Glinda

OP posts:
Eastpoint · 12/10/2014 15:58

I've just found the list of songs sung by girls who do Musical Theatre with my dd2. Some of them are more unusual so might be interesting:

Still hurting (The Last Five Years) Jason Robert Brown
Tell me on a Sunday (Song & Dance) Don Black & Andrew Lloyd Webber
Maybe I like it this way (The Wild Party) Andrew Lippa
The Wizard & I (Wicked) Stephen Schwartz
I want to be happy (No, no, Nanette) Caesar, Harbach & Youmans
Johnny One Note (Babes in Arms) Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart
I got rhythm (Girl Crazy) George & Ira Gershwin
Dance if it makes you happy (The Tap Dance Kid) Robert Lorick & Henry Krieger
Taylor the Latte Boy Marcy Heisler & Zina Goldrich
If you hadn't, but you didn't (Two on the Aisle) Betty Comden, Adolf Green & Jule Styne

Lj8893 · 12/10/2014 16:03
