Musical Theatre songs for teens?

KatyMac · 10/10/2014 23:17

I'm a bit bored so I thought I'd compile a list of MT songs suitable for teen girls (ie DD), and then I realised I really didn't have a clue Blush

Thoroughly Modern Millie probably has one or two & My Fair Lady and then I get stuck!

Ahhhh, my specialist subject < musical theatre geek> get this book
Lots of the old favourites and some new stuff and a few more obscure songs :)

KatyMac · 10/10/2014 23:27

I bought her that (but it's down at college with her)

Auditions are coming up

She needs something reasonably easy to sing, but obscure......& ideally not Disney

Don't rain on my parade?

morethanpotatoprints · 10/10/2014 23:48

Sound of Music

Especially 16 going on 17

morethanpotatoprints · 10/10/2014 23:49

The Earth and other minor things - Gigi and my favourite musical song

morethanpotatoprints · 10/10/2014 23:50

Oh, that Sweeney Todd one about the nightingale
really good for smaller none belting voices?

HeyMicky · 11/10/2014 00:00

'Nothing' from A Chorus Line
Cabaret from Cabaret
Adelaide's song from Guys and Dolls
If I Were a Bell
(I'll Build A) Stairway to Paradise
Pretty much any Gershwin - not always strictly MT but has the right kind of feel and lovely for auditions
Something from Out of the Woods
Send in the Clowns if you think she could carry it off, or Tell Me On A Sunday?

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 00:01

I don't know the last 2 - I'll you-tube them in the morning

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 00:02

She did Tell me on a Sunday Last year & only got 2 Diploma offers - so it wasn't ideal I think

Something tells me I have lots of research to do

Thanks for these I'll get back to you all when I've listened

Moon river?

MegTheCat · 11/10/2014 00:18

Somewhere over the rainbow?

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 00:31

Is she too old for something from 13 do you think?

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 00:32

Here Right Now from Ghost?

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 14:50

She'll be 17 Pictures, so maybe?

'Here right now' is quite a range isn't it?

She's quite Disney & that isn't really acceptable!

I've been laying a floor so I'll start listening to tunes now......

Sweeny Todd is that Green finch & linnet bird? That's pretty, not sure if it's a bit high for her tho'

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 14:55

I think Somewhere over the Rainbow is too much of a classic to attempt to sing - which is a shame as she does a lovely version like that Hawaiian singer did

I love Moon River - I'll suggest it

Back to DIY - I'll check the others out in a bit

Thanks everyone

With ds2 we always grab a bunch & try them out - then settle on the one that he's most comfortable with that fits what he's going for ( so for example when he needed to VW cute & innocent he did where is love, when he needed to show a range & different styles he did naughty etc etc). I think the main thing is that they're confident with the choice, and that's usually fairly easy to tell if you try a few out.

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 15:42

Yep- I'm getting the list together; I'm hoping the college will go through it with her as part of audition prep.

She will only get to sing one, so I don't want to constrain her

She like America (WSS), Rhythm of life & stuff like that but they are all ensemble pieces

I could have danced all night
I feel pretty
Defying gravity
As long as he needs me
They can't take that away from me
Take that look off your face
I don't know how to love him
Cheek to cheek
True love
Embraceable you
Almost like being in love
The trolley song
I got rhythm
Always true to you
S'wonderful
Get happy

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 16:00

What about 'colours of the wind' - it's too Disney isn't it?

I feel pretty & defying Gravity are way too much song for her I think so is send in the clowns - but I think she'll like 'I got rhythm'

She like Orange Coloured Sky but it isn't MT - but If I were a bell might appeal to her
