Musical Theatre songs for teens?

KatyMac · 10/10/2014 23:17

I'm a bit bored so I thought I'd compile a list of MT songs suitable for teen girls (ie DD), and then I realised I really didn't have a clue Blush

Thoroughly Modern Millie probably has one or two & My Fair Lady and then I get stuck!

Memory - Cats

Castle on a cloud - les Mis

One of Martha's songs - from secret garden (can't think of title)

Far from the home I love - fiddler of the roof. (gorgeous song)

Angelto5 · 11/10/2014 16:55

How about the songs from the king & I?

Shall we dance
Getting to know you
etc....

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 16:58

Can;t find the Martha one - is it on youtube?

A definate NO to Castle on a Cloud & Defying Gravity.

I'd steer clear from Colours of the Wind too, it's too young.

I Will Always Love You (from The Bodyguard?)

dementedma · 11/10/2014 17:01

Dd2 has done previously:
I don't know how to love him from JC Superstar
Out here on my own
On my own - les Mis
Umm, stuff from Wicked
I could have danced all night
Circle of Life - Lion King
Wish I could remember the others - she does have a big voice though!

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 17:03

Her voice isn't very mature Pictures - she is most used to singing in a choir & it really isn't big

Is Disney always a no?

OP posts:
Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 17:06

Not always a no but Colours of the Wind is often used for younger children's auditions. She needs to start thinking if herself as a woman not a teen now - but don't do anything that is someone else's 'signature' song unless you know you can absolutely nail it.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 11/10/2014 17:06

Roses turn? From gypsy I think
Maybe this time
Oh my god you guys from legally blonde
You'll never walk alone?

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 11/10/2014 17:07

Actually scrap the legally blonde one!

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 17:08

Not sure how Oh my Hid you guys would work as a solo audition song.

I'd probably have suggested the title track from Legally Blonde as its a great one for acting the song but not sure it would work with Katymacs dds ethnicity

Maybe Ireland or So Much Better would though?

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 17:13

Exactly that's why she has rejected Over the rainbow & everything Les Mis and I guess this year everything Miss Saigon too

You'll never walk alone has come up a lot' and at 'Puttin on the Ritz' last week she said she was singing one of them at college but I can't find a list of the songs

Nah Pictures - she spent the entire summer being teased about:
a) being a dancer - so a bit ditzy
b) being a drummer - so a bit ditzy
c) even for being a a dancer & a drummer they had never met anyone quite so blonde Wink

I like the Go back home from Scottsboro Boys but it doesn't really do anything (& I can't find the music)

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/10/2014 17:18

She sings 'Maybe this time' but it ends up quite wistful & it should be more of a belt I think

glinda · 11/10/2014 17:29

Oh Katymac, I don't envy you going through this. Her college will give her a lot of advice, but it is difficult to find the perfect MT audition song before someone else at college nabs it as their own! I think the general rule is to avoid anything that is currently (or was recently) in the West End or on Broadway.
DD did a MT foundation year last year and is now on a 3 year professional diploma, so she heard loads of good audition songs.
If you let me know what her range is like and what style - legit /modern /ballad /upbeat /pop/rock etc. suits her, I will text her and ask for some, more obscure, ideas.
Good luck!

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 17:39

I'm sending her old, cole porter maybe?

She likes Disney, & um Disney & Les Mis & WSS (& she can't sing either of them)

She's more of a choir singer & can do a great Zardok the Priest high soprano - but I think she is more comfortable mezzo

The song in Puttin' on the Ritz was 'Someone to watch over me' which is quite nice, All that Jazz is OK, she sang 'Someone like you' a pop song OK

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 17:50

Something from Bugsy Malone like 'I'm Feeling Fine' or 'Ordinary Fool'?

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 17:52

Something from The Boyfriend? Room in Bloomsbury or Charleston with Me?

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 17:53

Just thought - what about one if Meg Giry's songs from Love Never Dies like Suicide Hall?

saintlyjimjams · 11/10/2014 17:54

It's been mentioned a few times but if her voice isn't big how about I don't know how to love him?

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 17:58

I don't know how to love him is on the list

Well it would be if I'd started a list - I'm enjoying you tubing them all

Do you think Tomorrow from Bugsy could be "adapted"?

OP posts:
MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 18:10

Yes, I think Tomorrow could be a great piece for a girl dancer. Just think of the lyrics 'won't take no for an answer, I was born to be a dancer'..

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 18:20

How could I get it in her 'key' (How would I know what her key was?)

OP posts:
glinda · 11/10/2014 18:27

Has she looked at Stiles and Drewe musicals? DD sang Wait a bit from Just So. It might appeal to her as a Disney lover.

It might break the Disney rule, and the too obvious rule, but Watch what Happens from Newsies can be quite impressive if done well.

Waiting for DD to help, but I think that she is at work. x

glinda · 11/10/2014 18:29

DD was told not to mess about with changing keys - always pick a song that you can sing in the original key. Confused

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 11/10/2014 18:31

What is her key?what kind of song would she normally be comfortable singing?
