Musical Theatre songs for teens?

KatyMac · 10/10/2014 23:17

I'm a bit bored so I thought I'd compile a list of MT songs suitable for teen girls (ie DD), and then I realised I really didn't have a clue Blush

Thoroughly Modern Millie probably has one or two & My Fair Lady and then I get stuck!

I know we got into trouble for changing 'All that Jazz'

She is singing 'Someone to watch over me' at college so that must be fairly close

She can do high soprano but her voice is stronger a bit lower maybe Mezzo?

She learnt all the swahali for 'He lives in you' but it wasn't an appropriate song Sad which was a shame as it really suited her voice/style

If she likes Disney check out other Alan Menken stuff such as Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act and Newsies.
The other thing is to look at performers with similar voices/looks/styles and then look on You Tube at other songs they've done.
What about something from In the Heights if she likes the Latin vibe ( you mentioned America from WSS)? Although it's not very Disney!
Someone to watch over me sound good too :)

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 19:15

She will really like 'In the heights' I'll send her the link

She also loves Once & was gutted that she could never be in it

I just saw Evita, anything from there? You Must Love Me or Buenos Aires?
Other ideas
I'm Not That Girl from Wicked
Stars from Les Mis (I know, it's Javert's song - but I heard it sung by a girl once and it was magical)
The Hill from Once (this is a really, really beautiful song)
What I Did for Love from A Chorus Line

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 19:34

Would Jessie's song from Toy Story 2 'When She Loved Me' work?

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 19:37

Here's the sheet music for Tomorrow from Bugsy Malone

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 19:37

Oh!

I've just been facebooked "I'm letting my singing teacher decide which song"

Poop!

All my fun gone Sad

I might not agree with her singing teacher (whoever he/she is)

Spoilsport! But no seriously it's for the best.

I was going to take up cathy a suggestion if something from Sister Act (stage not film version)

BettyOff · 11/10/2014 19:40

What about 'popular' or 'I'm not that girl' from wicked?

BettyOff · 11/10/2014 19:41

Ah, cross post! I hope it goes well!!

MmeMorrible · 11/10/2014 19:41

No! I was just about to suggest something the Seussical! Was enjoying flexing my memory of musicals not currently in production!

Do let us know what she chooses.

HermioneWeasley · 11/10/2014 19:41

Some of Nancy's songs from Oliver? She would have been a young adult

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 19:42

She might have a great teacher with lots of fab suggestions (like my dh :) )

And he/she will have heard her sing unlike us. I've met her so I know her look/character type but none if us have heard her sing.

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 19:45

She can do most of the film version of Sister Act; & Pitch Perfect & Frozen & Tangled & Little Mermaid & Hercules (are you sensing a theme?)

OP posts:
Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 19:47

She should make herself familiar with the stage version of Sister Act.

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 19:49

She might have; but they won't talk to me & neither will the dance teachers Sad

I miss being over controlling and in charge

Alexanders Ragtime Band,

come follow the band

The Martha's song I meant is called "how could I ever know" Its an exam piece, but can't remember which grade.
In fact several of the suggestions on here are.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 19:58

OK I have The Singers Anthology for sopranos here, none of them are belters though as there are separate books for these.

Ten minutes ago - Cinderella (this is lovely)
Show me - My fair lady

Goodnight my someone
My White Knight
Till there was you - The music man

How are things in Glocca morro - finians Rainbow (not in the book)

Summertime - Porgy and Bess.

If I loved You - Carousel

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 20:03

Morethan, apparently DD thinks her (professional works at a performing arts college) singing teacher can pick better songs for auditions than me & the whole of Mumsnet - how unreasonable is that?

& Pictures agrees with DD?

It's snot fair!!

joanofarchitrave · 11/10/2014 20:04

I know I'm way late to the party and it's been taken away from you - but maybe another time The Sun Whose Rays from the Mikado -

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 20:12

Dh would kill me if I didn't agree.

morethanpotatoprints · 11/10/2014 20:13

Well I'm going to continue, maybe on my own Grin

How about some ideas for a pre teen with the voice of a teen Grin
I'm always running out of ideas.

Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 20:19

What it Means to Be A Friend from 13 Morethan (a couple of the lyrics might be a bit mature though)

Almost Nearly Perfect from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

KatyMac · 11/10/2014 20:20

So unfair

& the other thing that I think is unfair - the colleges she will audition for won't see any of the other dance genre she can do (so no African, Salsa, Ballroom/Latin, swing etc)

Gosh I'm on a whinge tonight - she isn't coming home until next Saturday & I'm on a stupid course then

Umm pre-teen Pocahantos? Actually Cole Porter might work - mind you what do I know DD didn't sing then

OP posts:
Picturesinthefirelight · 11/10/2014 20:21

If its any consolation Katy I get no input into what dd does any more & she's only 13.
