AnnMumsnet · 06/05/2011 09:26

This thread is for the MNers who are growing tomato plants from seed courtsey of Dolmio (well at least they are hoping to Grin). The project is designed to highlight the fact that 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses). For more info on Dolmio please click here

If you are a tomato grower and part of this project please add your updates below - we'd love to know about the plants at each stage - from humble seedlings to the fully grown fruit! Do let us know how, if at all, your children are getting involved as well. If you are not so succesful don't worry please also let us know here. If you need any advice please ask and if you can offer advice please do so!

Details for sending in photos is on the email sent.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

Thanks and best of luck
MNHQ

coolascucumber · 09/05/2011 13:54

JaxTellersOldLady · 09/05/2011 14:07

well arrived back from holiday to find a packet of seeds in an envelope... so will get them planted this week.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 09/05/2011 14:09

I have three very weedy looking seedlings
(out of 4 small pots planted with 3 seeds in each)
when do they go into bigger pots? how do we care for them in the meantime?

ProfYaffle · 09/05/2011 14:21

Mine are sprouting although yesterday a hen managed to nip one Hmm

mollymole · 09/05/2011 14:26

I now have teeny little sprouts coming through! [proud plant mummy]

ouryve · 09/05/2011 16:34

CharlotteBronteSaurus - when they're big enough to handle without squashing - usually when they've grown their first true leaves, separate any that share a pot into their own pots. You don't need to pot them on again until the roots are curling round and peeping out of the bottom of the pot they're in.

Lavitabellissima · 09/05/2011 16:42

Mine were planted 3 days ago, few seeds in 3 seperate yogurt pots on the windowsill. Fingers crossed that they grow Grin

I too have killed cacti in the past Blush

frazzledblob · 09/05/2011 18:20

We have seedlings here aswell :) I have donated one to DD's school so they can have a go at growing and I have just planted some more of the seeds today.

I need some pest control advice as we purchased a couple of plants a couple of weeks ago only to find them covered in green fly and little black ones. Those plants were banished to the back garden but I think some of our other seedlings may have been affected. Any tips for getting rid of them and detering any thinking of returning?

Bicnod · 09/05/2011 18:50

Wynken - thanks :) have taken lid off propagator and will wait for next set of leaves before moving to long tub (have only got long tub rather than individual pots but assume that will be ok).

Grockle - thought so - me too (originally - now London) love your username Grin

chrisonabike · 09/05/2011 21:14

Seeds planted in plastic tub. Wasn't sure about the propagator concept so have sort of loosely wrapped in cling film. I am told by know-it-all DP that this is incorrect so am off to put something with holes over it.

BornToYolk · 10/05/2011 10:30

Bugger! I killed my seedlings! Sad I neglected to water them and they are all droopy. I think one may survive...watch this space!

clayre · 10/05/2011 11:05

I think mine arent growing due to neglet too! I will wait till the weekend and if there are no sign i will start again.

This is harder than looking after the dc!

DinosaursHateUnderpants · 10/05/2011 16:54

Planted on Sunday, nothing showing as yet and they aren't neglected, yet! They have been diligently watered (flooded) by DS2 every night. Will report back when they start to shoot :)

Lavitabellissima · 10/05/2011 19:32

No shoots here yet, but the pack does say 7-14 days.

I've now put small freezer bags over my pots Confused maybe that will help!

TheMonster · 10/05/2011 19:35

BornToYolk, you might be surprised at how many survive and come back to life.

Lavit, it should help because it will act as a greenhouse and keep them warm, as well as keeping moisture in.

Spirael · 10/05/2011 19:53

Planted my seeds over the bank holiday weekend, and finally have some little shoots today! Grin

I hope they don't feel too despondent over the fact that their sunflower neighbours in the propagator are much bigger than they are...

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 10/05/2011 20:04

Wow we have shoots!! Only planted 2 days ago!

BornToYolk · 10/05/2011 21:53

BodyOfEeyore, I hope you are right! I'm mostly hoping that there might be a few seeds lurking that haven't germinated yet....

BehindLockNumberNine · 10/05/2011 21:55

We have numerous shoots in all bar 2 of the 8 pots. Only tiny, two leafed ones, but still. Have left plastic bag greenhouses in place for now. Dc are very excited

clayre · 11/05/2011 10:48

We have shoots at last! We have six pots and we planted 2 seeds in each and 5 of the pots all have one shoot!

What now? I have tomato plant food when should i use it?

Bunglie · 11/05/2011 10:58

Try cling film, once germinated and grown a couple of inches prick them out. I am going to plant mine in the Lemington's growbag this afternoon. Now that will be a challenge as I know that the snails will eat them but hey what is life if you don't feed a few snails? If I try Reiki on a snail will it die?
