Dolmio Tomato Growing Seeds - progress reporting thread

AnnMumsnet · 06/05/2011 09:26

This thread is for the MNers who are growing tomato plants from seed courtsey of Dolmio (well at least they are hoping to Grin). The project is designed to highlight the fact that 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses). For more info on Dolmio please click here

If you are a tomato grower and part of this project please add your updates below - we'd love to know about the plants at each stage - from humble seedlings to the fully grown fruit! Do let us know how, if at all, your children are getting involved as well. If you are not so succesful don't worry please also let us know here. If you need any advice please ask and if you can offer advice please do so!

Details for sending in photos is on the email sent.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

Thanks and best of luck
MNHQ

I still have NONE. Maybe i was sent placebo seeds as a test?Hmm

TheMonster · 22/05/2011 12:38

Oh paperview Sad
You're welcome to some of my seedlings if you want some.

moonbells · 22/05/2011 14:14

I have four up out of the 12 I sowed, not bad considering I sowed them in the potting shed! They will grow very compact there; I am wondering whether to sow more inside the house.

PaperView · 22/05/2011 21:52

I am going to get a different compost/growbag this week and see if that makes a difference, will also plant some in diff places indoors and out and see what happens. I have a few left. I'll call it a science experiment lol!

PaperView · 22/05/2011 21:52

I have managed to sprout a lettuce tho so not all bad ;)

AnnMumsnet · 23/05/2011 22:43

Well done on all the growing so far..I am deeply impressed and thanks so much for all the photos. We'll be loading some up over the next day or so and I'll post the link when they are ready!

Yay, my seeds FINALLY arrived today. Thanks MNHQ for sending them out again. I'll be getting them planted in a bit and telling them to grow fast so that they catch up with everyone else's Grin

grinningbee · 24/05/2011 16:00

I have rather a lot of seedlings. Will I be able to grow them on outside, or am I going to have to get a plastic greenhouse type thing? I got a very cheap propagator (£1.99 in Homebase), stuck it in the corner of the kitchen and they've done really well. Time to thin out, but I think I may also be suffering from PFT and don't want to get rid of any Grin

chrisonabike · 24/05/2011 17:36

PFT = precious first toms, grinningbee? I know how you feel. I think mine might even be G&T, they have two sets of leaves

Ann, I shall send you photographic evidence of my beauties forthwith.

AlmaMartyr · 25/05/2011 20:32

I got back from holiday and my seedlings all survived, hurrah! They mostly have true leaves now and are all looking pretty strong (turning slightly darker green). I'll probably move them into the greenhouse (little plastic one) in a while but that's a bit full of other stuff at the moment so they'll stay in DS's room for now (best sunlight).

natto · 25/05/2011 22:26

Love this project. We put our seedlings into pots in our little plastic greenhouse today. There were a lot of them and we didn't want to kill any so they're currently sharing; two a pot, then some might get given away to other people. Must remember to take and send photos...

DinosaursHateUnderpants · 26/05/2011 10:55

We've got 24 large seedlings now all planted out, and it looks like there are even more beginning to sprout in the original pot - how many are there in the whole packet?!

TheSkiingGardener · 26/05/2011 21:44

Just checking in. I tenderly and carefully lobbed my seeds out into our veg strip. (It's 1.5 ft by 4 inches)

I checked yesterday and I have SEEDLINGS.

Yay!

smokinaces · 27/05/2011 12:48

We have 3 we are going to repot tomorrow, but are testing the indoor growing as outside weather is awful.

Boys excited, but say it is taking forever Grin

droitwichmummy · 27/05/2011 12:54

My three have so far survived a) being outside, and b) the slugs! They are looking quite big now so I will re-pot them over the weekend.

ProfYaffle · 27/05/2011 12:57

Mine are now growing nicely, some at home in our plastic greenhouse and some on the allotment in a cold frame. High winds the other day shook our greenhouse so much that the plants on the top shelf came crashing down onto the plants on the bottom shelf. Thankfully after some repairs and watering the tomatoes have perked up again. As we're only allowed 3 photos I'm waiting til mine look a bit more impressive before taking any Grin

DramaInPyjamas · 29/05/2011 11:50

Just had a call from friend - His allotment was trashed last night (where were had them planted) so our tomatoes are no more ):

I don't think we can be bothered planting any more atm [heartbroken]

DramaInPyjamas · 29/05/2011 11:51

Did take a photo of some of the plants (I think) before we transferred them -
Will that still be ok for entry into the prize draw? (Where do I send it to?)

missorinoco · 29/05/2011 11:57

Slugs! I forgot about them. Shall add slug pellets to the shopping list.
MN, you can have a photo, but it's not very inspiring/impressive.

jenniferturkington · 29/05/2011 12:04

Joining late, but I have just planted my seedlings in to bigger pots and placed them around the garden. Hoping they survive two pre-schoolers on scooters, two bunnies eating whatever they can find, and my slightly haphazard approach to watering Grin
Will wait until they look more impressive before posting pics [hopeful]

TheMonster · 29/05/2011 12:12

I gave five of my seedlings to a colleague and she was very pleased.
The rest of mine are getting really big now. They look big enough to transfer to bigger pots.

ProfYaffle · 29/05/2011 18:20

Oh no Dramainpyjamas! How was it trashed? Weather or vandals?

PaperView · 29/05/2011 21:00

Still nothing here.....my shop bought "control seedling" is doing fab though!
