Zoomchat with David Baddiel about new book 'Jews Don't Count'

Hello

We’re delighted to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with critically acclaimed comedian, author of children's and adult's books, screenwriter and TV presenter David Baddiel.

If you'd like to hear from one of the UK's most successful comedians, discuss how anti-Semitism manifests in progressive politics, argue about the merits of the 4-4-2 formation, or just shout 'that's your mum that is', now’s your chance to grab one of our free places.

We’ll be particularly focusing on David’s recent short book which looks at how (in the words of the dust jacket) 'identity politics has failed one particular identity... those who think of themselves as on the right side of history have often ignored the history of anti-Semitism'.

David will be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering your questions on Wednesday 28 April at 8pm, and you can book your place now by registering here.

Please note 1 If you join the Zoom chat, your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name may be visible if we ask you to read your question out ‘live’, so consider whether you’re happy to use your RL name or want to use your MN posting name, or something else entirely.

Please note 2 We can only take questions from Zoomchat attendees on the night - please don’t use this thread to ask questions in advance as we can’t promise we’ll be able to put them forwards.

Register for free (only 100 places are available) here

Thanks
MNHQ

Clock ticking, @mnhq ...

@TruelyWonder

Can you link to the actual thread
Yes, sorry, I was in a rush and couldn't work out how to link to that exact post.

The thread is here

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4236171-Is-this-employment-policy-at-my-work-reasonable-Title-edited-by-MNHQ

His or her antisemitic posts were posted sometime today on the last couple of pages of the thread.

I guess this is the first time that mnhq's commitment to standing up against antisemitism has been put to the test Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2021 14:46

I think putting this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4236171-Is-this-employment-policy-at-my-work-reasonable-Title-edited-by-MNHQ in Site Chat could be good. MNHQ might not check here.

I have to say I stopping reading that thread after the first few posts because it was already heading in a very bad direction. Frankly, the original thread title was bad enough.

DropDTuning · 05/05/2021 14:49

@mrsterrypratchett

Yes, I agree it was a mistake to even go on that thread! I went there originally to speak in favour of positive action and against the obviously goady racism. I wasn't expecting it to then take a bonus antisemitic turn Sad

TruelyWonder · 05/05/2021 15:02

I found it and did a quick post with toddler been troublesome beside me.

Post has the right to not like David. We have to respect that. Some people don't except an apology. I don't with the Duke of Sussex. He did way to many things in the past. One only 3 years before meeting his wife. Anyway David has addressed in the book his past very well. After that people make up their own mind. Personally I don't think it means his argument is invalid or he doesn't understand the subject.

The poster in question has done the Israeli argument. So the ignorance or racism is plain to see. The idea of Jewish people not being an ethnic minority is beyond belief. However the lack of education out there about racism is to blame. Millions of people thinking one type of racism is worse. When all racism is repulsive and hurtful.

CommunistLegoBloc · 05/05/2021 19:34

I've reported it. Fucking shocking that it's still there. But the poster who was anti-Semitic on this thread is allowed back, so they obviously don't care at all 🤷

dropdtuning · 06/05/2021 08:44

They have removed that post now, which I'm glad to see, although I would like to feel a bit more like we are actually listened to and supported. And not just when they have a celebrity to mollify. It feels like an endless uphill battle.

dropdtuning · 06/05/2021 08:46

Also the other posts quoting and responding to that post still have it there, so those poisonous words are still on the site. I don't have the time or energy to go through reporting it all. It doesn't feel like there is any real will to tackle it.

Can't they do that "quotes a delated post" thing? It's not rocket science. I'm a Luddite and I can do Control F.

Sorry about the paper but look at this scum. The UK government need to make the wearing of the yellow star an offence now. Like they have done in Germany because of anti lockdown prats.

The way this lot went on to behave too. Racist scum!

@Oblomov21

Droptuning, you are so very very very wrong. The Spurs Jewish links are what the club is based on. The club is very very proud of these links. As are the Jewish community who are members of the club. They like the word, and celebrate it. Do not object to it. They like it. They have stated so. It's not derogatory. We are proud.
W.T.A.F? No. You are so very very very wrong.
