Zoomchat with David Baddiel about new book 'Jews Don't Count'

JuliaMumsnet · 22/04/2021 10:52

Hello

We’re delighted to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with critically acclaimed comedian, author of children's and adult's books, screenwriter and TV presenter David Baddiel.

If you'd like to hear from one of the UK's most successful comedians, discuss how anti-Semitism manifests in progressive politics, argue about the merits of the 4-4-2 formation, or just shout 'that's your mum that is', now’s your chance to grab one of our free places.

We’ll be particularly focusing on David’s recent short book which looks at how (in the words of the dust jacket) 'identity politics has failed one particular identity... those who think of themselves as on the right side of history have often ignored the history of anti-Semitism'.

David will be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering your questions on Wednesday 28 April at 8pm, and you can book your place now by registering here.

Please note 1 If you join the Zoom chat, your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name may be visible if we ask you to read your question out ‘live’, so consider whether you’re happy to use your RL name or want to use your MN posting name, or something else entirely.

Please note 2 We can only take questions from Zoomchat attendees on the night - please don’t use this thread to ask questions in advance as we can’t promise we’ll be able to put them forwards.

Register for free (only 100 places are available) here

Thanks
MNHQ

Sorry @Oblomov21- you'll need to register for the Zoomchat and ask your question in the Q&A channel on the Zoom platform on the night. We always have loads of questions on the night so we don't take questions in advance.

JuliaMumsnet · 23/04/2021 15:02

@Oblomov21

Rowan I'm getting very confused. I did register. I then get attached email.

Telling me to post question to :
[email protected]

Which I do.

I then get an email:

Thanks for getting in touch.

If you want to ask David a question, please post it on the thread, and hopefully, he will get to yours during the webchat. If you need any help with that, do let us know.

Telling me to post it on the thread.

I'm sorry, but this is very poor.
Mixed messages.

Hello @Oblomov21, thanks for highlighting this. That email is referring to questions about the event rather than for the speaker. But you're right - it's confusing, we'll make that clearer for next time.

HebeMumsnet · 25/04/2021 22:54

Evening, everyone. Thanks for the reports, which we wanted to reassure you we take seriously and appreciate. We have deleted a few posts on this thread. We will continue to delete anything antisemitic, or which breaches our talk guidelines in other ways, so please do continue to report any posts we need to take a look at.

RowanMumsnet · 26/04/2021 09:37

Thanks for all your thoughts on this. We absolutely agree that the 'Y' word is offensive - it breaks our Guidelines on racism and we will always delete any use of it. Though we tend not to discuss our dealings with individual users, repeated use of this word/ deletions for this word, or other racist terms, will always lead to a user account being suspended.
@JuliaMumsnet, how do we submit questions?
Hello @HermioneWeasley - we're only taking questions on the night, attendees can put questions into the Q&A box.

RowanMumsnet · 26/04/2021 17:11

@noraclavicle

CommunistLegoBloc

“It's not exactly a no tolerance approach to be racism / anti-Semitism if that's the case, is it?”

No, it certainly isn’t. And MHQ seems to have a tin-ear on this. The fact that they haven’t quite grasped that a user carefully keeping on baiting and prodding whilst no longer using the actual word they deployed to deliberately upset in the first place is still employing race-baiting behaviour is pretty depressing. The fact that it’s happened on THIS thread re Baddiel’s book should be slapping them collectively round the face like a wet fish with mind-awakening powers. But no...

We could have acted more quickly here for sure, but our policy is certainly a zero-tolerance one and we’ll try to be quicker off the mark in future.

RowanMumsnet · 27/04/2021 09:22

@Zzpplant

CommunistLegoBloc. I know. I can’t imagine many other threads where there was obvious baiting of a minority group that would have been left to run for days.

MN instead of saying you will try to be quicker off the mark in future how about assuring Jewish MNers that you WILL put a stop to anti semitism as soon as it is reported? Out of respect for your upcoming guest David Baddiel I think you owe him and us that promise . If not, I know what question I will be asking at the zoomchat.

Yes absolutely - we're happy to commit to that.

JustineMumsnet · 28/04/2021 12:30

Hi all,
I've had a good read of this thread and want to reassure you that:

 1. We view use of the Y-word as unacceptable and will always delete it henceforth
 2. We do not tolerate anti-semitism, just as we would not tolerate any other kind of racism on Mumsnet.
 3. We recognise that anti-semitism is a terrifying and growing problem is this country and around the world and that Jewish people feel understandably threatened and we are 100% committed to making sure that any instances of it on Mumsnet are stamped out quickly and offending posters suspended.
 4. We certainly could have acted more quickly in deleting posts and suspending the user who was repeatedly arguing that the Y-word isn't offensive on this thread, rather than let the argument run over the weekend. The reason the mod team didn't jump on this quicker was because, firstly, it was the weekend and we didn't have the full team on hand and secondly, there is, in society generally some confusion about the offensiveness of this term wrt to Spurs fans - DB has talked about this in various articles and in his book, particularly with reference to the then PM, David Cameron's use of the word. But you only have to look at the reaction on this thread, or indeed read DB's book (which I highly recommend) to understand just how offensive this term is to Jews and how aggressively it is often used by racists. So I want to apologise that we were slow to act here - it's a learning for us and we will be quicker next time.

JustineMumsnet · 28/04/2021 14:25

@murbblurb

Thank you *@JustineMumsnet*, comment at last. As others note, your weekend team are quick enough with other forms of racism. There's no 'confusion' that the term concerned is offensive. Your team need education.

I hope that the actual webchat will be fully monitored so that David Baddiel receives the same respect and protection as anyone else.

Hi I'll be hosting the zoomchat and yes of course DB will receive same respect as any other guest.

JustineMumsnet · 28/04/2021 17:10

@Nightbear

’yes of course DB will receive same respect as any other guest’

Well, he is a Chelsea fan ....

good point Confused

RowanMumsnet · 29/04/2021 11:26

Hello

We're incredibly clear across the team at MNHQ that spelling out the 'N' word is not allowed under any circumstances, at all - no exceptions. It will always be dealt with when it's reported to us and honestly it's just not true that we would ever tell a reporter that it's OK because it's 'educational' - if you've got any links or correspondence where we've said that please share them with us because it's absolutely not our approach and we'd like to get to the bottom of it. In some very limited circumstances (eg quoting a relevant source while making a thoughtful contribution to a thread) we might edit a post to replace letters with asterisks.

Surprisingly, it's sometimes posted but not reported. We'd urge you all to please hammer the 'report' button if you ever see it because it will definitely be dealt with (and we'll follow up as appropriate with the users who use it) when we're made aware of it.

In the past we've tried setting up an automatic 'bad word' filter to catch the N word and automatically hide any posts that contain it, but (as is the way with these tools) it was picking up too many other words - but it feels like there must be a solution to this so we'll ask our tech team to have another look at that.

RowanMumsnet · 30/04/2021 10:52
@RowanMumsnet - was the webinar recorded, and if so, will you be making the recording available for wider viewing?
Hello

Zoomchat participation is open to all MNers but recordings are now exclusive to Premium subscribers - so if you're not a Premium subscriber already, have a look at the sign-up page here to see what's on offer.

MichaelMumsnet · 05/05/2021 09:28

Hi @froggygoneacourting and thanks for your comments.
We're taking a look at the Google search results and will remove any instances that we find.

We've checked correspondence on our side and we've found many reports where we've deleted racist language but can't find anything where we allow use, 'in a non-abusive context'. As we've said, please do forward anything that would help us to get to the bottom of this.
