To want to ban these phrases (not light-hearted - this would be my first act as dictator)

"I'm reaching out" - no, you are contacting me by email

"it broke me" - no, it made you a bit sad

"Picky bits tea" - just no

I have found my people. <<<Genuinely, I'm not objecting to the use of the phrase, I really have found my tribe on this thread, with the exception of objecting to calling your spouse baby, which is completely acceptable, as is babykins.

Can I add to the list 'drive and hunger' in a work setting, instead of being motivated and conscientious.

A buffet

Dinner

Whodathoughtit2 · 01/07/2024 23:35

'I really resonated with this'. No.

I will die on that hill.
No you won't.

I was with you OP til picky bits tea. What else do you call a tea of bits that you pick from?!

You call it a buffet
you call it a spread
if it’s a wedding or funeral spread it’s a purvey

OnePeachCrow · 01/07/2024 23:37

It was so fun.

It wasn't - it was fun or such fun!

There's always some old uncle at a funeral or wedding that could be described as "purvey" too.

People who 'grab' lunch

People who 'do' holiday locations

People who use 'terrified' when a proportionate reaction would be to be mildly worried. They're either ridiculously over-reacting or completely misrepresenting their feelings.

People who use 'terrified' when a proportionate reaction would be to be mildly worried.

Fully agree. See it here all the time - ‘terrified’, ‘horrified’, most of the time it seems like such an overreaction.

"Little gem" to describe a hospitality business or attraction someone is reviewing on Google maps. SO overused!

"Can I get..." when ordering food or drink.

Or the even more egregious variant I've heard on Selling Sunset, "I'll do a [insert name of food or drink item]".

GAAAHHH!

bumblenbean · 01/07/2024 23:38

So many of these!

the time lapse photos with ‘how it started’ and ‘how it’s going’

’this one’ when referring to a DP (incidentally I irrationally hate the word ‘partner’ too!)

An OP posting ‘this’ in response to a comment that agreed with their post.

Hashtags that are totally meaningless tagged onto the end of a post

The overuse of ‘trigger warning’

’unalived’ himself

Rabbitoney · 01/07/2024 23:38

Poorly.

I’ve seen it used for everything from recovering from chemo to feeling a bit sick from a cold FFS

IsItTimeToRetireYet · 01/07/2024 23:35

The use of ‘perfect’ as an acknowledgment…

“what would you like to drink?”
”water”
”perfect. Still or sparkling?”
”still”
”perfect”

How and why did this become normal?!

I agree. I find under twenty five years use it most, and I’ve only noticed it in the last few years.

See you later - said by shop assistants. Err, no you won’t see me later unless you’re stalking my house.

Ahhhh don’t banish me to the gulag, one loose use of spread. It’s better than pick tea though? Come on…

You must be one of those facebook marketplace sellers that has no idea just how many times other sellers have, in fact, already sold things we want to buy.

No, it's the fact there's no "hello", or "please", or "thank you", nor indeed any attempt at showing any genuine interest. I know it's a template, but use your own brain. Why not:-

"Hi, if this is still available I can bring the £10 with me to collect any time from this evening. Many thanks"

Bored of (no, it's bored with)

Prep (instead of prepare; and let's face it, making a meal to take to work isn't nearly as self-important as 'prepping' makes it sound)
