Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

maybe you could bring out a cat range of icecreams

Gingernan · 09/08/2022 18:32

Mm sounds yummy,I think I'll just stick to the cold chicken stock and the spring water from the tuna. One of my cats has kidney disease so it's extra fluid with everything.

God, I thought penis beaker would be the most disgusting thing I’d ever read on mumsnet. Shrew ice cream 🤮

I feel the need to ask.. What is penis beaker? 😳

HaveYouAnyDreamYoudLikeToSell · 09/08/2022 18:52

I'd hold off on the ice cream.......

Harls1969 · 09/08/2022 19:00

Sorry OP, the shrews/mice are gifts for you, otherwise the cats would have eaten them already (and let's face it, they already have much nicer food available). So unless you've got a hankering for shrew sorbet, I'd give it a miss 😂😃

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 09/08/2022 19:03

Cats get ice cream headaches you know. My cat had one the other day when she pinched my ice cream. She didn't know what was happening. Wish I'd had a camera 😅

Atomicspider · 09/08/2022 19:15

Oh this is going to turn really bad when you’re accused of dabbling with langya virus 😩I can imagine the posts already 🙈

Shrews wasn't a typo then.

Grin I clicked on thread to see what the the OP actually meant because I knew "shrew" was OBVIOUSLY a typo. Envy

Cotonsugar · 09/08/2022 20:25

Is this a joke post? Shrews, “Can’t taste sugar” even if they could why would you want to give a cat (or any pet) sugar anyway? Shrew ice cream - good grief 🙄🙄🤮🤮

hotfroth · 09/08/2022 20:25

A previous cat of mine would happily eat shrews - if the heads sometimes left on the back doorstep were anything to go by. Mind you, this was a cat who would catch moles and stoats, so she was game for anything.

@IcakethereforeIam

'Tom & Jerry's' 🤣🤣🤣🤣

MN at its finest, this thread.

It's all over my Twitter feed today, from all sorts of sources. I usually have pretty dry tweets on academic-related matters so it's been great seeing this pop up in unlikely places!

Literally what I came to check too 😝

SarahAndQuack · 09/08/2022 20:53

This thread makes me deeply happy.

I am irritated that I came to it via twitter, where some snotty twat was suggesting MNers wouldn't be able to use words like 'albeit'. Cos, obviously, being a mummy rots your brain.

(I am also gobsmacked by the number of people who read it totally straight).

My feline overlords salute you.

TokyoTen · 09/08/2022 21:06

Lanya virus anyone?

Totorotoes · 09/08/2022 21:10

The famous feline chef Nigella Clawson does a mean 'mouse head and tuna' ice cream, great when eaten with an ice-cold tunatini.

How do you know shrews can't taste sugar?

Maybe we need another wee experiment - set out a humane trap baited with hairybos and licorats allsorts and shrewbet dip and see if they all congregate overnight to stick their pointy little noses into it. Bonus - tomorrow we will have extra rodents for our continuing ice-cream experiments!

Or did you mean cats?

Hi OP

Tour cats are busy! We only get about one live grass snake a year.

The pilchard sorbet could be a winner? But make sure there's no actual bits of ice in it, as I don't think cats like actual ice. I would suggest just slightly chilled, with a hint of tuna perhaps?

You are mad cat woman extraordinaire with the shrew ice-cream recipe. I think you need a cauldron to do these experimental recipes justice.

But try the lick-e-licks tubes chilled as a starter to establish if they like cold things before you break out with the wildlife recipes.

Where the hell do you live that cats bring in grass snakes. And how big are they? I need a total no-go zone round where you live (general vicinity ~not you in particular ).

Misses point..., but SNAKES

Twiglets1 · 09/08/2022 22:48

New recipe for the folder - tuna bhuna

BooneyBeautiful · 09/08/2022 23:25

Laiste · 08/08/2022 18:56

Is that true?

Cats are obligate carnivores; definitely not insectivores.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/08/2022 23:47

The cat we had as a child once caught a grass snake. I seem to remember it was about an inch thick and two or three feet long, but that may not be accurate. Normal sort of garden in an Essex coastal town.

Can't they eat dog icecream? (On this thread I feel obliged to clarify.. icecream made for dogs, low lactose and other sugars. Not dog ripple...Though doubtless some cats would like that, revenge is a dish best served very cold...)

Stopcomplainingandsortit · 10/08/2022 00:06

I really don't think the mouse would go well with shrews!! Can't you make a seperate little appetiser out of it? I love the mouse pop idea tho. Classy!!

ozymandiusking · 10/08/2022 00:20

I wonder if there could be a market for some fish shaped lolly moulds.
Lakeland may be interested.
