Does parking on a closed road count as a live parking thread? 😁

So they have closed the road I live on to resurface it. It will be closed for the next two nights. We’ve had multiple letters from the council, there have been signs up for at least a month and yesterday they painted NO PARKING THURSDAY AND FRIDAY all over the road.

8 cars are still parked there with 15 minutes to go until resurfacing begins. One of the cars is right outside my house and when I saw them out the window, I tried to explain to the two women (looking like they were off for an evening in town) that they were probably not going to be able to get their car until morning but they told me to fuck off!

The road is lorry central, a guy is taking pictures of the remaining cars… it’s all go here.

Anyone know what they do? Do they just resurface round the cars? Tow them away? Do they get brutal? There’s a fair few annoyed looking men in hi-vis walking up and down! Should I get wine and a comfy viewing position?

😉

It reminds me of when they closed my road at one end but people thought that they knew better. I’d watch them go past my house and then happily wait for them to come back.

Been there @PriamFarrl They closed my road at both ends but residents (5 of us) could go to our properties. They were re-routing a stream under the road so there was a large trench for it with a small footbridge. Think Grand Canyon but on a very small scale. Entitled horse box owner drove through at least 4 Road Closed signs then screeched to a halt in front of the canyon. DC and I had walked up to see how the work was progressing. Entitled horse box driver yelled at me for closing the road. How we laughed as she tried to u-turn in a narrow country lane think 21 point turn and was then late for her precious DC's pony thing as it was an 8 mile detour.

I'm sure the admins of the local FB page of "this Middle England market town" is wondering why they are getting so many requests to join...from Scotland to the West Country. Plus a few who live in USA

When the possible dead child’s bone reappeared the other day I tossed it into the undergrowth. Do I?

get the bone and take a picture
bury the bone again
leave the bone where it is
get the garden blessed/exorcised just in case, you never know…

I think you retrieve the bone, and wander up and down the road waving it at the cars that are still there, muttering an incantation for them to be loaded on the back of the tow truck.

I live on a distant continent now but ye gad am I feeling homesick reading this 😭. Parking drama, comeuppances, bosom hoiking, hilly roads, lanes with ridiculous names, dog with its own room in an actual house, imperial/metric measurements, tradesmen, hi vis jackets… It’s like Last of the Summer Wine, but with a younger demographic, a tiny bit more exciting but no less deeply satisfying 😅

A village on the main route to a large town has over the past 2 years been closed so many times, every one is sick of it.
The road closed signs stay up 24hrs a day even though the road is passable between about 5pm and 8am. They are there when no one is working and the road is passable. They put them up days and days before the work starts.

Our village residents FB page gives the most accurate current information.
The diversion is MILES out of the way.

People ignoring the signs is not always them knowing better, it's them hoping that the signs are incorrect.

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles thank you, but I haven't even read this thread yet, and am currently working on my next Playmo project. But thanks for thinking of me! Grin

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 22/04/2022 14:43

@NoisyBrain
I don't care about being outed per se (though I really might have to name change after this!) so for a bit of a giggle I have actually drawn a viper in chalk on my gate post!! Grin
(please don't judge my fence the landlord is shit at fixing things!)
If you find it..... You win a prize (looking at a shit viper!)

When I had the pleasure of living in this town, back in the last century I heard the following conversation.
Person at bus stop to passing lady (who had a head scarf on and was carrying a wicker shopping basket) "Do you know which bus goes to L Town?".
Lady in reply "L Town? L Town? Nobody goes there from here. Even the maps only show from L Town to here".
I happened to look at book of maps some time later and she was right.

Definitely go with the suggestion from PP and wave it at remaining cars shouting a incantation, I suggest the mitchell and webb sketch type one.......

Where I live the council has a habit of closing roads then putting up a single 'diversion' sign. No hint of how to take the full and complete diversion. Just a sign usually with an arrow pointing at distant hills in the next county. As we are a popular tourist area with people who do not know the area this is Not Helpful.

No. They thought they knew better.
You see there is Main Road, which was closed for a bit, and I live in Side Road. Side Road comes off Main Road, wiggles about a bit, and then rejoins Main Road. People would see that Main Road was closed and thought they could sneak down Side Road even though Side Road was closed at the other end.

Having to laugh at this thread. OP I don’t live in your lovely town but I’m in your county and not far away, and I do have a friend who lives in St I.

Having cracked the code, I feel as though I’ve passed some sort of initiation test <preens>

DinosaursEatMan · 22/04/2022 14:58

I’ve never visited this area but now feel that I need to make a pilgrimage…

PunishmentSnart · 22/04/2022 15:05

It took me FAR too long to realise where St Evenage is.

(Only realised when another poster pointed it out 😳)

Is Wibbly Wobbly Lane really called something else? I haven't been them ways in a few years!

NoisyBrain · 22/04/2022 15:08

@RozHuntleysLeftHand Excellent! I may have to wait till tomorrow but I am definitely going in search of the chalk viper! 😄

To be fair it's been a while since I drove down it, but I think it's Carter's Lane (with 'formerly known as Wibbly Wobbly Lane' underneath).

Ah, my home town! Anyone else on this thread who was born in Waitrose?! 😃

Yes. Terrible.

At least Wobbly Bottom Farm is still there and hasn't been renamed something like "Goats So Simple" Cheese haven.

I have information!

Someone of whom I have carnal knowledge is a hi-vizzer. He is a road liner- or 'he doodles on the roads' if anyone cares enough to ask me.

I can confirm that many, many measurements are done with his feet. He also uses a 'ping string' a lot and every time he uses the phrase I say it over and over in my head because it's so cute. This means I also don't listen to anything else that comes after it it thus far i've got away with that.

I'd also like to confirm that he does get exasperated and throws his hands up in the air (like he just doesn't care) just like OP's diagram. A lot. Especially with parked cars.

I did a summer as a chain man (although I am a lady), setting out on building sites and I tell you back then (25 years ago) it's a wonder anything was ever built where it was supposed to be.

If the men who dug holes for several of our street's new lampposts right in the middle of the pavement are anything to go by , things are still not going where they are supposed to be.

The following day several people wearing business suits accessorised with hi-vis jackets and hard hats were seen wandering the street with plans and measuring sticks while looking very puzzled.

I'm not totally sure why they needed hi-vis jackets and hard hats to walk along a pavement that the inhabitants were successfully navigating without such attire; it's not as if a hole was going to fall down and hit them on the head..
