What's the broken thing in your house that everyone just puts up with?

I'll start. We have a three legged Henry Hoover, and any time anyone hoovers you hear lots of banging and "fuck offs" as it falls over every 3 seconds. It's been like it for five years and rather than replacing it we all have just grown to accept our disabled Henry.

What's that broken thing in your house that everyone just accepts and lives with, despite how annoying it may be? I feel every family must have one Grin

We also have a 4 slice toaster that only works for 2 slices.
We have a kitchen tap that makes a loud hammering sound when you turn it off. It also sets off other taps.

KurtWilde · 10/01/2022 20:54

@Clovacloud

The floor. In a moment of lockdown madness we ripped up all the shitty laminate to get to the floorboards and I then painted them white because I saw it looking fabulous in magazines.

Turns out white only works if you have killed your whole family and don’t own a dog. It looks so beyond awful now, think shitty white - we’re just ignoring it. I miss the laminate Blush

Oh lord I did this when I first moved in here. I'd seen some floorboards in a magazine, painted gloss black with Moroccan style rugs and big foliage type plants and I was convinced I could pull it off. What a state that was!! Yeah.. Turns out it's really difficult to paint floorboards when you have kids and pets, and takes ages to dry..

Dripping bastard tap in bathroom

Supersimkin2 · 10/01/2022 20:55

@ooherrmissus14 Grin

BeachHat · 10/01/2022 20:56

Clothes rack dryer - it has a couple of prongs missing and the legs are wobbly but it does the job.

KurtWilde · 10/01/2022 20:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow does your cold tap work at all in the bathroom? My kitchen tap is a mixer one and only runs hot. Which is great when you want a glass of juice. Not!

ginsparkles · 10/01/2022 20:57

En-suite loo. Broke several months ago. DH attempted to fix it, but it's a big pull out the whole room job so now it's just a big white thing for putting your towel on when you shower Grin

mammajustkilledagnat · 10/01/2022 20:57

I had a 'fuck it' moment just before Xmas with the bastard hoover that had been broken and crappy for several years. Bought me a new one, Happy Christmas me!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 20:57

It maybe only works when you want hot water. Then the bastard will probably run cold

amitoooldforthisshit · 10/01/2022 21:00

such abuse, poor henry hover

Vanillabourbon · 10/01/2022 21:01

The oven light has been broken for 6 months, I just shine a torch in there if I really need to see without opening the oven.
The curtain pole has been hanging out of the wall one end for about 2 years now. Both on my never ending to do list!!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 21:02

I used to keep a torch at the side of the wardrobe to search for the right colour tights as the bulb in our bedroom was so shit.

But we never changed it until it died.

JeffThePilot · 10/01/2022 21:03

@LoveAndBeSilent

Oven door 🥴 has to be slammed and wedged shut with a kitchen chair, has been broken for over a year!
I’ve got one of these.

And a dodgy toilet seat that I keep forgetting about until I sit on it 😐

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 21:04

JeffThePilot

Wait until you seat on it and it swerves so much you fall off.

This WILL happen.

LavenderAskew · 10/01/2022 21:05

Our oven only last 30ish mins and the grill about 5 mins before it stops working. I think it's the thermostat (can't imagine what else it might be) as if you leave it long enough it comes back on. We've adpted now after several years to meals that need no more than 30 mins in the oven or can be done on the hob. I try not to think that I've not had a bacon sandwich for so long.

Spudbitch · 10/01/2022 21:05

Everything! Broken kitchen drawer you just have to pull out cutlery tray, washing machine in wrong place and makes floor shake when on spin, no handle on back door never had one never occurred to anyone to get one.., ridiculous doorbell that rings every time somebody over the road rings the door of the house opposite cos they are on same frequency!! Looroll holder won't stay in place and noone except me ever pucks it up off floor and puts it back, various unfinished projects such as unfinished wardrobe with no doors, unpainted shelves in finished bedroom, missing seal on another wardrobe it's a bloody nightmare actually thinking about it.

LavenderAskew · 10/01/2022 21:07

Henry vacuums are hardy souls aren't they. They can survive so much. Does anything kill them?
Spudbitch · 10/01/2022 21:07

Oh and we have 1 plug in the house because people keep losing them??!! A plug yes a plug we even bought new ones and still we have ended up with one so we have to swap between bathroom and kitchen why why why no idea

RomComPhooey · 10/01/2022 21:08

Our microwave door. The microwave is a relatively new but out of warranty expensive microwave/convection oven combi. The door release sticks so it takes multiple attempts to get it to slam shut properly. The microwave won’t start until the door clicks shut properly. It’s maddening but we don’t feel right about sending it to landfill and we can’t get it fixed. Just describing it here is making me annoyed.

SunscreenCentral · 10/01/2022 21:08

This thread has made me feel more normal and reduced my anxiety so thank you all

ivykaty44 · 10/01/2022 21:08

all female household

the downstairs loo seat

its fine down, but any poor male visiting think they jus broke it when they spend a penny

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 10/01/2022 21:09

Can we nominate for classics @mnhq this is fantastic so refreshing its not just us Grin

Thatsplentyjack · 10/01/2022 21:10

Oh yes the toilet seat. Everything was absolutely fine until ds2 potty trained. He's broke. I've had around 5 new ones since and he breaks everyone within a couple of weeks and then we live with it for a good year or more. No amount of tightening works.
He also broke the front door handle around 4 years ago. Dp has fixed it 3 times. Actually bought a new handle twice and he keeps breaking it!

Leftbutcameback · 10/01/2022 21:11

The shower stopped dispensing anything except lukewarm water about three months ago. Appreciate that isn't very long, but have no hopes of it being fixed anytime soon!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 21:11

Dh and l had a theory about loo seats. That the only ones that don’t do the tilting things are on the original seat that came with the toilet.
