I've just deliberately sent my husband on a wild goose chase

I may or may not have changed some details of said hobby and equipment.

He has a 'hobby' that he is obsessed with. Let's call it wild goose chasing. He watches YouTube videos about wild goose chasing, he reads magazines about wild goose chasing, he has all the gear ('infrared', 'thermal imaging' etc) and likes to go out wild goose chasing on a regular basis.

Recently he hasn't been wild goose chasing due to some disillusionment with his level of success in wild goose chasing and the lack of presence of gooses in the local area. This means every night, for many hours he has talked to me about wild goose chasing. Reads out bits from magazines to me. Talks endlessly. Listens to goose chasing videos in bed and comments on goose chasing techniques.

Tonight I went out on a run and happened to see a wild goose in an unusual location.

Nonchalantly told DH about it and would you know it, off his own back he's excitedly gone out to chase said wild goose.

I've now had two hours of mumsnetting and watching MAFS UK without someone talking about gooses through it. I expect DH is still delightedly crawling around on his hands and knees with his thermal imaging goggles looking for said wild goose.

Only I didn't see a wild goose.

AIBU?

AIBU to see it again tomorrow?

This is genius, now plotting ways to get rid of hubby for a few hours who tries to bore me with talk of his hobby.

GooseyGooseyWander · 02/09/2021 00:11

So I took him by his left leg and threw him down the stairs

Drastic
@Holskey
He loves looking for a goose when there is an actual goose to be found. No one thinks it’s funny to be lied to and manipulated all as a joke. And then to brag about it online. This is horrible. What kind of people are you to condone this?
Oh good, you’re here…🙄

GooseyGooseyWander · 02/09/2021 00:15

@BruceAndNosh

I don't know her DH's hobby, but I feel we're all on a Wild goose chase searching for the answer. What if the OP. has tricked us, not her husband?
I really haven't.

Can't reveal the hobby though. It's too outing. Grin

Or perhaps it actually IS goose chasing and this is a double bluff

Schroedinger’s goose? It’s both there and not there until it’s observed by your dh, so technically op you’ve done nothing wrong.

Agapornis · 02/09/2021 00:16

I work in nature conservation so judging by obsessed people I've worked with who like nocturnal wildlife:
Hedgehogs?
Moths?
Scottish wildcats?
Pine martens?
Foxes?

Could be worse than wildlife, I once knew a birder obsessed by WW2 pillboxes...

How specific were you with the sighting of the spiritual goose?
Will he be dragging you out to pin point the location?
Ask you to describe the condition of its feathers?

HaveringWavering · 02/09/2021 00:17

What’s MAFS UK?

Good work OP, glad you guys peace to watch it, whatever it is!

Cabbagewhites · 02/09/2021 00:21

I know! It’s moths! He likes butterflies and moths, right?

offyougotwantychops · 02/09/2021 00:22

I dunno about cruel, I mean op had been out for her run, probably came back honking so cooked her husband's goose, think it just reaffirms the pecking order, and allows for nesting behaviour with a good film!

Yes, it's brilliant and a lot less disgusting than their usual stories!
me4real · 02/09/2021 00:23

@AngeloMysterioso Ah, the MRA. Not seen her as much for a while.

Agapornis · 02/09/2021 00:24

If it's moths, here's a lovely square-spot rustic from earlier tonight for you to share with him Grin (or so my app tells me)

I've just deliberately sent my husband on a wild goose chase
FrostedFlakesAreMyJam · 02/09/2021 00:33

Not the point of the thread, but your husband sounds fabulous. Or maybe I am just equally dull. But his 'hobbies' suggest he'd be really interesting to have a chat with.

GooseyGooseyWander · 02/09/2021 00:34

@BruceAndNosh

Him: good run? Me: yeah ran all the way to goose wood and back without stopping. Him: oh, thats taken you a while, i thought you might have gone further than that in that time [my goosey plan starts taking root] Him again: oh I've told our darling children they can stay up as late as they like tonight because spurious reasons [goosey plan spreads wings] Him again: I've been thinking about geese.... me: funny you should say that, I think I maybe just saw one rapidly exiting goose wood as I ran past Him: I'm going out, I may be some time. Me: Tatty bye. Here's a flask of tea I happened to have prepared. Oh.. but can you put darling children to bed before you go. Thank you muchly.

FelicityBeedle · 02/09/2021 00:37

Would the /goose/ genuinely have been rapidly exiting from the path? So it can’t be anything too slow

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2021 00:37

does he dress like sherlock holmes in his pursuit ?

Horsemad · 02/09/2021 00:37

Lol lol. It's got to be moths!

yellowcourgette · 02/09/2021 00:38

Please tell me it's otters and it's in a town beginning with the letter P...

A tv programme called "Married at First Sight UK" I think. (Just been watching it! Grin )
TatianaBis · 02/09/2021 00:39

@MrsLargeEmbodied

does he dress like sherlock holmes in his pursuit ?
I definitely see him in a deerstalker with a monocle.
BruceAndNosh · 02/09/2021 00:42

I've changed my mind
@PlanDeRaccordement was right.
The OP has clearly put too much malice aforethought into this. Grin

Mamanyt · 02/09/2021 00:42

@KurtWilde

I'm taking a couple of wild guesses.. either Pokemon go, or ghost hunting 😂
I'm betting, with "Infrared" and "thermal imaging," we're talking ghost hunting.

As for our OP...Let's not do this too often. Save it for when you desperately want a few hours for yourself! And God help you if you actually DO see a wild goose somewhere! You might just catch that bug yourself!
