Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

Went to a medieval school building in Marakesh. Not a woo person at all, but I just felt really really sad walking around it. Felt better as soon as I was out of the main gate. Spoke to one of the group afterwards and she felt exactly the same but didn't want to say anything to me as she knows I'm not a woo person!

I stayed in a very old coaching inn once. It was a market town in the West Country. I had a really dreadful night's sleep and checked in the morning if it was known to be haunted. Oh yes. Very. Action was taken and let's say it was a lot less haunted by the time I left. Do not mess with a very tired priest in need of a quiet weekend.....

“Agree about marshes. Went in a moonlight walk in the Battlebridge area of Essex. Rotting old boats and sluggish streams. An old pub , the Barge , whose patrons were rather Dickensian. In fact we felt as if we were materialising from the opening scene of Great Expectations. Loved it”
@Abhannmor
I live quite near to Higham marshes where Great Expectations was filmed. A misty morning walk around there is fabulous.
Here’s a picture from another local spot that I took earlier this year, enjoy!

I walked up a footpath near Sidmouth, Devon and suddenly felt like bursting into tears - I've no idea why but I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness. However, it's a lovely place and I'd return in a heartbeat.

Dungeness does have a weird feel but I didn't dislike it as such or feel the need to get out. I felt more uncomfortable in Lydd for some reason and I had been quite interested in visiting because some of my ancestors came from there.

One place that really creeped me out was an apartment in Frigiliana, southern Spain which was built into the side of a hill. Lovely apartment and views, but the bedroom made me feel really uncomfortable. It was years back and I don't recall if I had a terrible nightmare or anything, but I only spent one night in that room and dragged the mattress out into the living room and slept there for the rest of the stay. I didn't have that terrible sense of impending danger in the rest of the apartment.

Lancaster Arms in Lancaster...my son at University there and I had to leave the following morning because i was completely spooked ...girl in reception said that the room op mine was haunted! My son had already said he thought it was a film set for TheShining to look at ...spent the next two nights in his student house 😂

BumCat · 03/06/2021 16:46

@TellmewhoIam you might find the book ‘The Covent Garden Ladies’ by Hallie Rubenhold an interesting read.

Akire · 03/06/2021 16:48

I do think Hotels should be made put things like this on bookings. Some people love it, but most people who are sensitive to these things would rather not pay and not get any sleep!!

Springchickpea · 03/06/2021 17:05

@purplebagladylovesgin id love to know which street in St Ives. I know it very well. And there are a few spots.

GerryManderson · 03/06/2021 17:16

Puzzle Wood in the Forest of Dean gave me the spooks as a child. It's so beautiful but very...ethereal. I'd love to go back and see what it would be like now.

These photos are from a lake in Wales. I did a solitary walk and it was all rather eerie. The local tree surgeon told me to beware shapeshifters 😋

Generally, I think stagnant water and gloom are instinctively creepy.

I also think that what makes Saltburn so odd-looking is the shape of the cliffs. It looks as though they're burying you alive.

@littlecottonbud

For me it was the Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield - the pit head baths - you could sense a presence - both me and my son felt it - we have been since and the presence had left.
You know if followed you hone, right? Grin

Edam

Thought it would be a nice cheese making tourist town. Turned out to be a very creepy little Dutch village.

The window display of taxidermy birds dressed and posed like some psychopathic sylvanian families set must about finished me off.

@LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone

Definitely Saltburn!! DH and I went there about 30 years ago and still talk about that "spooky place". As we walked about, people would stop and stare at us, and honestly we're just ordinary looking! It had a Royston Vasey vibe to it. We stayed for about an hour and then legged it back to Whitby!

OP, have a lovely lovely time there!! Wink

We used to live not far from Saltburn. We often took the kids there for an afternoon and a pub meal. I loved it.

It must have been you @LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone Grin

@CustardySergeant If you Google savernake ghosts and mumsnet you should get a very creepy tale

Springchickpea · 03/06/2021 18:36

Ohohoh, I completely forgot about one. On the edge of Loch Tay, on the Ben Lawers side, there is an abandoned village. Went for a walk on my own there once whilst DH was at a work retreat and it had a really foreboding atmosphere. It was a beautifully sunny late September day but I did not feel safe there at all.

partyatthepalace · 03/06/2021 18:36

@Toddlerteaplease

Glastonbury is meant to be a 'thin place' where the veil between earth and heaven is very thin, and you can see beyond it.
@Toddlerteaplease

I think that’ll be the skunk Grin

partyatthepalace · 03/06/2021 18:39

@ohnonotyetplease

Just for the record.. homeopathy is not to do with 'feelings' and isn't 'woo'.
Homeopathy is woo to the max. YABVU

Ephesus in Turkey. Felt a huge weight of history when visiting the ruins.

Also the ruins of Coba in Mexico. So very eerie and surrounded by jungle. Tulum is a bit the same.

SamW98 · 03/06/2021 19:04

Portmeirion -As soon as you leave the confines of the village, anyone with an English accent is treated with utter contempt, ignored and made to feel as uncomfortable as humanly possible

Anna727b · 03/06/2021 19:11

I think it's probably more to do with the cliffs and the way things are positioned feeling a bit 'off' OP. I can get that about Saltburn from the pictures that you posted!

Weirdly I feel similarly about Llandudno!

I just don't think there's anything supernatural or odd about it really.

Anna727b · 03/06/2021 19:13

Maybe piers are just a bit weird?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/06/2021 19:21

Portmeirion -As soon as you leave the confines of the village, anyone with an English accent is treated with utter contempt, ignored and made to feel as uncomfortable as humanly possible. I mentioned Portmeirion upthread.

I've been to Ephesus and didn't get those vibes at all.
