Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

That makes me want to go there tbh. Never been myself but apparently people say similar about Glastonbury.

PoTheDog · 02/06/2021 22:04

Heptonstall above Hebdon Bridge is super atmospheric. A bit eerie, but mainly you feel the weight of history

Bluntness100 · 02/06/2021 22:04

Gosh, what made you freak out on the pier and run off it?

Sillysandy · 02/06/2021 22:04

Yes, Townsville in Australia years ago. It felt like vampires had come and ravaged the place.

CroneAVirus · 02/06/2021 22:06

Why are you going back there OP?

RevolvingPivot · 02/06/2021 22:07

@CroneAVirus Because I'm an idiot abs the kids wanted to go with my mum and I'd forgotten all about it.

@Bluntness100 I'm not sure it was pitch black and the pier was so long.

Agree re Heptonstall!

Aprilwasverywet · 02/06/2021 22:08

Some apparently haunted stones on Mull. Trying to he brave as took teens there. Absolutely wanted to run like fuck back to the car!!

BlueButtercups · 02/06/2021 22:10

Buckfast Abbey..

just eerie

Fyredraca · 02/06/2021 22:11

I've been to Saltburn. Can't say I noticed, though it was freezing cold!
I thought the standing stones at Duddo in Northumberland were pretty atmospheric.

DeathByWalkies · 02/06/2021 22:14

Kata Tjuta - which is near Uluru in the centre of Australia. I'm definitely an atheist, but it's the only place where I've ever felt something spiritual.

Coleford in the Forest of Dean - I'm fairly certain there's a breeding population of Dementors there, given the incredibly depressing vibe.

Just remembered the 1 time I went to Saltburn I was overcome by a migraine suddenly.. Never ever had one start not first /last thing in the day. Felt quite disorientated and we went home.

newnortherner111 · 02/06/2021 22:18

Have to agree about Coleford. The Forest of Dean was described by the late Dennis Potter as 'ugly villages in beautiful landscapes', which I think was spot on.

everythingthelighttouches · 02/06/2021 22:18

Port sunlight

ThreeKneeRepeater · 02/06/2021 22:20

Sillysandy yes to Townsville. What an odd place.
I also agree with Death about in the Forest of Dean. I couldn’t wait to leave. Everyone seemed to go silent and stare as we walked through it.
I’m adding Tintagel in Cornwall and Andalsnes in Norway. It was full of knitting wool shops.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 02/06/2021 22:20

Chippenham. No idea why but I couldn't wait to leave. It just struck me as a very odd place.

I feel the vibes from your second photo OP, with the red building

I agree. I was in Townsville back in 1988 and I thought it was a really creepy place ...the only place in Australia that I was very happy to leave ...I cannot remember anything specific it was just the general vibe!
Springchickpea · 02/06/2021 22:21

Definitely got a strange vibe.

I grew up in Cornwall and there are many places that give me the Willies - but probably Men-an-Tol (ancient stone monument thing), the village of Gulval in general, and Tehidy hospital being the most obvious.

Also Royal Victoria Country Park in Hampshire.

TokyoSushi · 02/06/2021 22:21

Lytham St Anne's!

When DS was 3 I took him to the ruins of an old church on a cliff top. He happily goes wherever I go, 3 year olds are like little puppies. Except this church. We walked happily through the graveyard and I wandered through the church doors and he stopped dead and said 'no spooky castle. Go home mummy' I tried to persuade him by saying it wasn't spooky but he would not go through the door of that place. Makes me a feel a bit weird thinking back to it.
