I just spent the night nursing a cushion tassel thinking it was a baby hedgehog

Ok so my back is currently in spasm so am blaming my high strength painkillers for being such an idiot. Last night after letting the dogs out for a wee they became incredibly excited and it was because there was a hedgehog outside. I quickly got the dogs in and the hedgehog went on it's merry way. I was in the living room watching lots of episodes of Doc Martin (my new fav programme). I looked down and saw a small white soft spiky thing. I picked it up and panicked it was the shape of a baby hedgehog but white. I googled baby hedgehogs it looked the same. I was awake until 3 am cradling and keeping warm a cushion tassel. Googling and learning all about how to care for a baby hedgehog. FFS what a moron 🤣 I only realised this morning in the daylight what it was.

Missing the point here OP, but if you happen to have a Tens machine, do try it for your back. It saved my life last year when I had back spasm and a newborn to pick up and look after. I was also taking co-dydramol and ibuprofen, but I don’t think I could have functioned without the TENS.
Long term, I’d really recommend seeing a physio - either NHS or private if you can afford it.
Good luck! There’s no worse pain. I have no idea why they don’t prescribe anti-spasmodics by the way! But I was also told they wouldn’t.

My lovely ex-husband saw what he assumed was the corpse of his favourite cat lying under the wheels of a neighbour’s car. Much sobbing later, it turned out to be a Sainsbury’s carrier bag. 😞 Bless him.

Holding a cushion tassle would feel nothing like holding a living animal irrespective of whether you could see it’s face.

You did not stay up all night cradling a tassle you thought was a hedgehog. You posted this to get al the ‘I’ve never laughed so much’ responses.

Well thank you for sharing that with us.
amusedbush · 27/02/2021 23:48

I didn’t think this was made up - a friend recently thought there was a tiny baby hedgehog out in the rain in her back garden but after much freaking out she realised that part of her pink fuzzy slipper had fallen off GrinGrin

In her defence, it really looked like a living creature!

Shufflebudge · 28/02/2021 00:02

@ToadsThePeanutButterSnob no problem. Thanks for your witty riposte

@amusedbush yep, seeing something resembling a hedgehog in the garden versus ‘cradling’ a curtain tassel all night....very different

Yep I agree. Do people really believe this. Surely it's tongue in cheek?
PhoenixIsFlying · 28/02/2021 00:19

Absolutely not made up. I also said I didnt think it was a cushion tassel, probably a large tree bud as previous poster identified. I do not post threads, I prefer to just read however I found the situation funny so thought I would share it. I am sorry you wish to press the point that you dont believe me. Shufflebudge I simply wished to share a funny occurrence not to 'get' laughs. However unfortunately you decide share negativity and disbelief. Your prerogative but I don't believe you don't believe me.
Thank you EarlGreywithLemon a really helpful tip. I will look that up. Love your name and indeed a very pleasant drink!

😂😂😂. That is too funny - literally crying.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/02/2021 00:23

Oh that is just the sweetest thing ever.Grin
To be fair that cushion tassel is almost as cute as a baby hedgehog.

boredinthouse · 28/02/2021 00:25

You thought a cushion tassel was from a tree? Fabric and trees feel different surely? This thread gets stranger and stranger

Gobolino80 · 28/02/2021 00:29

This reminds me of the time a man turned up to lay the new stairs carpet as agreed and I explained to him that he could go ahead but I was very sorry because he'd have to remove the dead mouse from the stairs that the cat had just brought in as I'm a massive wuss and couldn't bring myself to do it. Turned out it was one of these

People believed and enjoyed penis beaker and various other threads of its ilk.

Maybe they were made up, maybe they started out with a grain of truth that then became over-egged and over exaggerated. Who knows but in the grand scheme of things if people enjoy them then there's no real harm in it.

boredinthouse · 28/02/2021 00:33

I feel like I'm in a parallel universe. I'm fairly sure my six year old could tell by sight the difference between an animal and a toy/piece of tree/bit of a cushion. If she couldn't tell just by looking she would definitely know if she was 'cradling it all night'. I can understand a quick glance and thinking it was something else, but you were holding it!

Did you mean a rat?

Because that looks at least 20 times bigger than a mouse?

bitheby · 28/02/2021 00:37

My Nan did this. Thought there was a dead baby bird in the shed. Made a box for it and made my granddad go and gently pick it up. Turns out it was a daffodil bulb.

Furries · 28/02/2021 02:44

OP - really hope your back gets better soon.

Your post made me chuckle - ignore the fun sponges, I don’t care if it’s made up or not, we all need a smile at the moment.

We don’t have a good history with hedgehogs in our household.

Many, many years ago my birthday party was held in our back garden - this is probably about 40 years ago. We had very low post and rail fences between us and the neighbours. Once everyone had left and mum finished tidying up, she too’ the black sack out to the bin at the side of the house/back garden. It was dark. She saw a round shape on the patio and thought it was one of the party balloons and, feeling confident in the dark, she thought she’d try to score a goal over into our neighbour’s garden. Not sure who was more freaked out - the hedgehog she booted or my mum when the hedgehog “screamed”. She was mortified, she loves animals.

Wasn’t long after I passed my driving test. Driving in the dark down a semi rural road. Hedgehog was lit up by my headlights, no traffic coming the other way. I pulled across the road to avoid it, but didn’t judge the distance properly, so squished it with my rear wheel. 30 years on and I still think of Mr Hedgehog when I’m driving!

I've just snorted myself wide away reading this while trying to sleep. Thank GOD you didn't take it to the vet. Grin

@Slub

I was once kept at bay for an entire day from entering our conservatory by a mahoosive spider . DH gets home from work and picked up a bit of spidy shaped fluff Blush
I freaked out last night because there was a spider in the half sink. I have very long, black hair and it was a few hairs that had somehow ended up there bundled up.

Some posters add value to a thread. Others on the other hand....
askmeagainin5 · 28/02/2021 03:55

I’m really glad to see a few posters on here who have mistakenly thought they encountered a dead cat.

I love cats so much and I have a bit of a fear of seeing one dead - if I see one that has been hit by a car I feel really distressed and upset. I was out on a winter run a few years ago and the sun was setting (which is an even harder light to see in than the dark imo) and I didn’t have my glasses on. I got really panicked because I thought I saw a dead cat. I rang DP and said you’re going to have to drive here because I can’t get any closer to it, I’m too scared and I’m really upset but I need to check if he’s alive/hurt/breathing. DP arrived and slowly started to walk towards it. When he’d got a bit closer he just burst out laughing because it was a Mcdonald’s paper takeaway bag. I actually have no idea how but it had crumpled up into the perfect shape of a sleeping cat!

Have also done the reverse a few times and thought DCat was an object Grin He’s got jet black fur and once I grabbed what I thought was my pair of black jeans I’d thrown on the floor the night before, to realise it was poor DCat asleep on the rug all curled up!

I would rather have 100 made up threads like this one than any of the made up threads about traumatic events designed to garner sympathy and god knows what else from MN users. Real or not, crack on OP!
