I just spent the night nursing a cushion tassel thinking it was a baby hedgehog

Ok so my back is currently in spasm so am blaming my high strength painkillers for being such an idiot. Last night after letting the dogs out for a wee they became incredibly excited and it was because there was a hedgehog outside. I quickly got the dogs in and the hedgehog went on it's merry way. I was in the living room watching lots of episodes of Doc Martin (my new fav programme). I looked down and saw a small white soft spiky thing. I picked it up and panicked it was the shape of a baby hedgehog but white. I googled baby hedgehogs it looked the same. I was awake until 3 am cradling and keeping warm a cushion tassel. Googling and learning all about how to care for a baby hedgehog. FFS what a moron 🤣 I only realised this morning in the daylight what it was.

Reminds me of the woman on the local Facebook page that found an escaped chinchilla behind the local tesco. It looked unwell so she took it in and kept it warm and was trying to find its owner.

Turns out it was in fact a rat and the pest controllers had put down bait at tesco the day before so it was actually a dying poisoned rat.

oh, this is so funny! i’m in the bath laughing my head off whilst my kid is shouting through the door demanding to know what’s so funny. definitely the kind of thing i’d do though. i once looked out my bedroom window and thought i saw my cat lying motionless by the kerb. in a blind panic i ran out in a nightie and no shoes, in front of all the morning traffic... to find out it was a bloody football! i didn’t have any glasses on, so it took me right until i was in front of it to realise that it wasn’t the cat. i bet all the cars watching were wondering what the hell i was doing!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/02/2021 19:33

@WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead I was the same with DP. He had absolutely no idea what I was trying to tell him because I was laughing too much at the sheep shit fungus!!

RavingAnnie · 27/02/2021 19:51

😂😂😂😂😂

I was feeling flat and miserable. Thanks for cheering me up lol!!!!

Cactuslockdown · 27/02/2021 19:56

You are not alone. I used to volunteer at a wildlife hospital. One evening a lady came in very concerned about a baby hedgehog, she’d driven about 10 miles to get to us and the ‘hedgehog’ was all bundled up in a shoebox... it was in fact a one of those round spiky seed pods from a plane tree Blush

firstimemamma · 27/02/2021 19:59

That's hilarious!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 27/02/2021 20:02

WingingItSince1973 · 27/02/2021 20:10

Thank so much for cheering me up. I'm in pain with back spasms too. I have coedine/paracetamol mix, naproxen and diazapam. Its awful isn't it. My back spasmed while I was putting my knickers on this morning! My poor 14 year old daughter 🤣 Hope yours eases soon xxx

WickyWackyWooWa · 27/02/2021 20:26

I once spent a whole week watering plastic plants (as well as real ones). The man who usually did it was away on holiday and once back had to empty all the water out of the pots.

Not even medication related. The plastic plants did look real though Blush

Florawest · 27/02/2021 20:46

What wonderful stories here, hope your back behaves itself and gets better soon, lovely to read about the kindness all around us to real and the not so real animals 😂.

That baby hedgehog picture is adorable, went for a walk today and was nearly in a bush trying to get a photo of a lovely little bird, few cars passed and people probably wondering what was wrong with me, oh and of course didn't get the picture.

Absolutely brilliant Grin

ilovepixie · 27/02/2021 20:59

I had a blood clot recently and this combined with the strong pain killers and blood thinners I was on made things a little hazy. I refused to go to bed as there was a spider on my pillow waving at me! It was actually a black dot on the pillow case design!

alwayslucky · 27/02/2021 21:19

Befuddled or not, you are a lovely person. If it had been a real animal, you would have given it every chance of surviving.

StareIntotheMaggotDrawer · 27/02/2021 21:28

A few years ago, while on a break at work, I was making sure people were being very careful when walking past some baby hedgehogs, when going back into the building. It turned out to be bits of moss that the wind had blown off the roof.

In my defence I used to be very sloppy with getting my eyesight checked on time, and was probably a couple of years overdue

IWishIWasABaller · 27/02/2021 21:28

@PhoenixIsFlying

WorraLiberty I do understand that it seems odd not to know but it was dark at night and I was in pain. The dogs had also just disturbed a hedgehog in the garden. These baby hedgehogs dont look unlike what I found.
Except-they have faces and legs.
PhoenixIsFlying · 27/02/2021 21:48

Shufflebudge I am sorry you don't believe me. Lying is simply not my domain. Yes I was being incredibly dim and as I said in the cold light of day I could obviously see it was not a hedgehog. Hedgehogs do curl into a ball when frightened. I have seen an adult one and there is no sign of a face or limbs when they do that. I am able to realise I was such an idiot and can laugh at my own stupidity. Intense pain and medication can cloud your judgement. To all the other lovely posters am so pleased I could make you laugh. I have commented but never posted before and could see how ridiculous it was and wanted to share it. Lovely to read other posters stories too xxx
