I bought a white coat in the sales to look like Olivia Pope, but I actually resemble a middle aged taekwando instructor

@Maireas

Thank you, 183fredamarleymum! I was wondering if he got covered in fluff! I remember those very fluffy jumpers from my youth, we all managed to leave a trail wherever we went.....
There were jackets, too. I remember going to a jumble sale with my parents in the 80s. Mum picked up a jackety cardigan thing that was grey fluff with tufts of darker grey fluff sticking out of it. In the middle of each dark grey tuft was a little sort of stringy tassel. Just as the woman selling it was approaching mum to do a bit of a sales pitch Dad leant over and said "Is... Is that mouse fur ? Poor little bastards"

What's wrong with being middle aged? Or a martial arts instructor?

There's nothing wrong with it. I am both of those things and I still found it funny. TBH, most martial arts instructors would, because we're quite robust about things generally (plus we've already run the gamut of people saying things like "Why do you wear pyjamas to do sport" and "You have to take off your shoes and socks before you get into a fight" etc)

On ill-advised outfits though- a few years ago I bought a lovely red and white polka dot, 50s style dress. It had a halter neck and a big skirt and I LOVED it. I put it on, it did wondrous things for my figure, so I skipped downstairs to show ds2.

Both my boys are lovely people, always say I look great-but I could tell by ds2's face that something was amiss. When I probed further , he reluctantly admitted that "You look like Minnie Mouse Mum".

I can handle being told I look like a middle aged martial arts instructor, but not Minnie Mouse Grin

Shodan · 17/01/2021 10:20

(apologies to Minnie Mouse if I've offended her)

BruceAndNosh · 17/01/2021 10:22

I have a bright pink, fairly fitted warm zip up jacket for winter golf. I love it.
Last year I saw a knitted beanie hat in the exact same colour and thought it would look great with the jacket.
Arrived on the first tee and my playing partner told me I looked like a penis

Rainbowandscarlett · 17/01/2021 10:23

Many years ago my dad wanted to buy my mother an outfit for her birthday

The only problem being that he’s not exactly an expert on clothes for either member of the sexes so roped in my aunt (who to be fair does have perfect taste)

Off they went to buy her the perfect outfit and finally settled on a beautiful red top and matching skirt

A week later she opens her present and is delighted-it was a lovely outfit

So off she trots to go try it on and she came back into the room and gave us all a twirl

‘What do you think?’ She asked

‘Oh love you look beautiful’ my dad smiles ‘you look just like a fat postbox!’

He could never understand why she never wore it after that...

I have many disasters, but my ongoing nemesis is dungarees. I spend ages looking at them, but try hen in and remember they make me look like an oversized oompa lumpa.

MoseSchrute · 17/01/2021 10:30

Oh god I brought white ‘shortie’ dungarees in the sale for a promising spring/summer.....I might try and eBay after reading this (they still have the tags, I never tried it on...)

RedRec · 17/01/2021 10:38

I have just been and looked at the 'Suzi Quatro's fat nan' thread as recommended by @Proudpeacock. Don't think I have ever seen anything better on Mumsnet. Howling.

Cooltalkin · 17/01/2021 10:40

I’m laughing so much ... and my dp has gone to read his work e mails to get away from me
IKEA superfan .. just perfect !

Bearnecessity · 17/01/2021 10:40

I haven't laughed so much in ages..thank you everyone.😭😂🤣

MNerGoneRogue · 17/01/2021 10:43

@RainingBatsAndFrogs

I am still ROFL at hissing Sid Grin
So is my DH. I read that one out to him
BigusBumus · 17/01/2021 10:45

Hmmm I've been looking at Lucy & Yak dungarees this week.... I'm a size 14 and 5ft5. Should I not bother? 😁

notmoreNetflix · 17/01/2021 10:48

I can't find the post that linked to the other thread, I wonder if someone could kindly post again please.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/01/2021 10:49

@MrsMoastyToasty

I decided to make myself a maxi dress with some floral fabric and a pattern off the front of a dressmaking magazine....I looked like Laura Ingalls from Little House On The Prairie.
This actually made me snort while laughing. 😂

@CornedBeef451

The weeble gong to a funeral tipped me over the edge!
Then obviously you’re not a Weeble ‘cos they can’t fall down!

Purplethrow · 17/01/2021 10:50

@BigusBumus I really think you should, come and show us for the much needed support which you will probably need if you wear them Grin

Ginkypig · 17/01/2021 10:50

@sofiaaaaaa

Wait what, is that a scandal reference?? Didn’t think anyone on this forum knew about Olivia Pope !
You mean the goddess who’s team and herself changed the face of American politics and beyond. Who’s fashion makes me want to chop an arm off and give it to Satan to have the figure to pull it off but who’s relationship choices need work!

No never heard of her.

LaMarschallin · 17/01/2021 10:55

After reading this I feel even more stupid for buying a coat that I actually realised looked like a lab coat!

The trouble was that it had a gorgeous lining - all overblown roses in pinks and green on a white satin background - which I fell in love with.
The coat itself was pale pink and I convinced myself it would work.

Of course, when I wore it, you could barely see the lining and I just looked like a lab assistant who (possibly in training to be an absent-minded professor) had left a red sock in with the whites wash.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 17/01/2021 10:56

This thread has made me laugh loads- thanks OP.

I bought myself a lovely stuff cotton shirt dress from Toast - sort of pale black/charcoal colour. I have to be careful with Toast dresses - some a very sack-like.

Anyway thought I'd done well and wore said dress to a family meal where my delightful brother asked why I was dressed like Chairman Mao. ShockGrin

Kroptopbelly · 17/01/2021 11:06

In the 1980’s my friend and I went on a night out to a bar with a drag Queen as DJ.
Friend looked lovely, white stiletto shoes, white leggings, red floaty blouse all held together by a lovely white belt.
Shut up, it was fashion then!
Anyway, as my friend walked across the dance floor, DJ on the mic announced..”here she comes, she looks like a used tampax”!
She found it very funny but we had to go home so she could get changed.

Miljea · 17/01/2021 11:07

You've all just reminded this middle-aged lady why she needs to keep up the Kegel exercises.... 😂

doodlejump1980 · 17/01/2021 11:12

Ditto blue (v cute) dungarees dress and a yellow top underneath. My kids were delighted that I’d dressed up as a minion. Me? Not so much

Maireas · 17/01/2021 11:14

@BruceAndNosh - looked like a penis 😂 😂 😂

MammaMiaWallace · 17/01/2021 11:19

In my teens I splashed out on an off white Ted Baker coat and thought I looked amazing.. first outing wearing it a stranger yelled: “oi love why are you wearing a lab coat?” 🤣🤣🤣

MutteringDarkly · 17/01/2021 11:19

The weeble going to a funeral, and the shaved bear have had me wheezing with delight Grin Also an honourable mention to the "actual clown suit" owner planning to add a pair of their DH's shoes and style it out.

I had some yellow trousers as a teen, that I once blithely wore with red shoes and my coat that was brown. Person at the bus stop said I looked like the sauces pictured on the wimpy menu. Carried the coat for the rest of the (freezing) day as it was the only bit of the combo I could remove.
