Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

I've just been thinking about this as I've been lay in the bath.

I'm currently pregnant and baby goes mad when I'm in the bath and I was watching him kicking and squirming inside me and just thought... This is actually pretty odd when you think about it. I have a living thing that's moving around inside me!

A friend had to have a blood transfusion not so long ago and she can't think about that for long without feeling squeamish that someone else's blood was inside her!

What other things do you find strange when you really think about them?

Different colour perceptions

www.gondwana-collection.com/blog/how-do-namibian-himbas-see-colour/

Westerners can't easily tell which green square is a different colour in the first circle.
The Himba tribe can't easily detect the blue square

Things that are actually pretty weird when you think about them?

Here's a minor strange thing that I noticed this morning. I was writing that I was pleased to hear that a professional sportswoman that I follow has signed a new contract with her team. So I wrote that I was glad that she had resigned. Then changed it to re-signed. Confused Adding the hyphen makes the words mean more or less the opposite of each other. How did the word for leaving a post come to be the same as signing on again? I'd never noticed before.

I went to the Paper Mill museum in Basel and learnt that what direction you write in (left to right, top to bottom) and how your letters are formed (straight lines or curvy ones) was driven to a large extent by what materials were used to make paper and what worked best for each medium.
Fascinating

Bumply · 01/11/2020 12:40

@MrsAvocet in my previous job we used to digitally sign documents and if any changes were made you'd need the chain of approval to re-sign.
I would get twitchy if people asked me to resign.

@JaJaDingDong

How do you pronounce them differently? Is it dialect or are you the only one?

Religion - That otherwise sane and intelligent people can believe in a god with no evidence, & spend their whole lives following a bunch of random rules that they think this god made.

Avery7 · 01/11/2020 15:52

@cushioncovers IIRC it's because women naturally have more contrast between our eyes/mouth and our skin. This is why we use makeup to further increase this contrast and look more feminine.

CounsellorTroi · 01/11/2020 16:32

How many ways there are of pronouncing the letters ough. Rough, cough, bough, dough.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/11/2020 17:29

The fact that each month a woman releases a different egg so if you fall pregnant in October for example you will have a child that is completely different from a child that was conceived in September.
I think about this a lot. DS has a chromosome issue, DTwins are identical. If a different egg had come out or we'd concieved a month earlier / later we'd barely notice but our lives would be SO different

Lots of thought provoking comments here. I went to see Brian Cox the physicist when he did a UK tour a while ago & it just blows my mind how intelligent he is & all the things he spoke about.

One thing that I’ve always found weird is Bluetooth. The fact that I can have music on my phone that will then play on a speaker that isn’t wired to my phone. I love technology, always been into computers & tech since I was a child, but this is still something that I can’t get my head round 😂

Why women who spend a lot of time together their periods start to sync

Is there a female in the group that will lead this (as a few times I’ve noted that flat mate/colleagues fall into my pattern) maybe just coincidence

But why does it happen what is the reason behind it. Is it so the male we are mating with won’t mate with the females we are close to (or less likely to)

On that.. There's one man in my office, and 6 women. For 2 weeks before my period he's kind, caring, asking me how I am... The day my period ends and for about a week afterwards he doesn't ask me about myself. Worked with him for a few years and this is how he always is... Its weird

The logistic industry. How do they work out who needs what where? I say this as an HGV driver of three decades. Quite frequently I'll get a job that makes me think people are burning diesel for something that could go in a van.

Monogamy. Imagine just reading one author all your life. Yet we all do it and all get bored with it and stay through some sense of morality

Well not quite.

I've read more than one author, I've had sex with more than one man. I tend not to read two books at the same time, or have sex with more than one man.

And lots of people who get noted of it pick up a side book or throw their book in the bin and get a new one.

From an evolutionary perspective it makes sense that you know which man fathered your baby so he can go fetch you mammoth curry for dinner

@dudsville

I think dancing is weird. Everyone just jiggling themselves this way and that in front of each other.
This is making me lol, the image it puts in my head of two people just shimmying in front of each other in some sort of black endless room...

What a good & crazy thread - feels like I’m falling down the rabbit hole reading it 🤯 or we’re all in some sort of giant virtual That-70s-Show circle smoking pot.

Someaddedsugar · 01/11/2020 19:42

@mumsnethq can we nominate this thread for classics?

Reesewitherknife · 01/11/2020 19:47

Food - I often how many people have died in the past eating certain poisonous food stuff before it became common knowledge throughout mankind that those foods were to be avoided.

malificent7 · 01/11/2020 20:04

That we are living on a rock circling a star in space and that we are destroying said rock.
The fact that could bemillions of other rocks with lifeon them or that we might be the only rock with life. Either way life is bonkers!

DryRoastPeanut · 01/11/2020 20:12

I think of my three daughters and their children and I wonder how different the world is because I had my children. One of my grandchildren or great great great grandchildren could invent time travel or cure cancer.

Also I get a bit mind blown when I think of that perfect unbroken line of women before me, my mum, my grandmother her mother etc, stretching all the way back to the first recognisable human and even further....

Animum2 · 01/11/2020 20:43

This is a weird one

Your bladder will let you know when you need to pre but how does the brain know the difference between sitting on a toilet seat or just a normal seat?

Animum2 · 01/11/2020 20:44

*pee

Eckhart · 01/11/2020 21:04

Also, on the subject of pee, isn't it a peculiar evolutionary failing that we can be desperate for a pee and simultaneously very very thirsty.

Spelunking · 01/11/2020 21:17

Another thing I find weird is taste. For example, my mum made a chocolate cake that 10 of us had a piece of after tea. Everybody apart from me and my niece said how nice it was. To us two there was something not quite right about it. It turned out that she was originally going to make a lemon cake and put a tiny bit of lemon into the mixture before changing her mind. Why was it only noticeable to two of us?

tmh88 · 01/11/2020 21:22

Don’t know if this has already been posted but perfume scents, my sister smells amazing in this musk perfume.. I bought some and it’s just smells awful on me! It’s so strange how it can smell so different on people.

Frankiegoes · 01/11/2020 21:38

Sharing a double bed with your dh/partner. We don't have to sit on a double chair together. Or share a double plate to eat our dinner. Or have bath together. But have to sleep in the same bed.
