I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

I used to watch V with my parents, scared the shit out of me with those tongues.
Loved, loved Moonlighting, I was 14 and allowed to watch it on my black and white portable tv and I’d watch That’s Life on a Sunday evening thought I was very grown up.

This thread brought a tear to my eye, OP.

I'm with you all the way. Star

SharonMott · 02/02/2018 19:45

Oh, and as you can tell from my username. I loved Jackie Magazine, Patty's World in particular. Still looking for my Johnny Vowden!

MrsFrTedCrilly · 02/02/2018 19:46

I was traumatised when I was off school sick and caught a programme with a naked family playing frisbee on daytime tv. The man had his bits dangling all over the place.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:48

Are we all just getting old and very nostalgic or is life these days just a little bit shit? Can’t quite make my mind up on that one!

OP posts:
LiveLifeWithPassion · 02/02/2018 19:48

Or maybe naked family was 70’s?

SallyOMalley · 02/02/2018 19:48

Twoweekcruise and Edith - you've both got me fair blubbing now. I miss the beds made up with proper sheets and blankets, Granny's Pear's soap in the bathroom and Grandad's teasmade by his side of the bed.

After breakfast, we'll go off outside to rollerskate up and down the street (the paths were much smoother than in our street). Mine were royal blue with bright yellow go faster stripes - they were awesome! Then perhaps round to the park at the end of the main road - we'll buy a Texan on the way. Or some Smiths Square Crisps - always loved those.

ARichVernacular · 02/02/2018 19:49

I'm coming too! Just let me finish writing in my pastel pink diary with a padlock about how much I love Michael J Fox, then I will don my fringey t-shirt dress that my dad brought back from Greece so that everyone will think I've been there, and my grey suede pixie boots that were brand new and not hand-me-downs from my cousins. Then I just need to do my eye make up (bright orange on the lids, bright yellow to the brow bone) and I'm there. Happy to lend my Lipcote on the bus cos we're all totally going to get snogs.

Limara body spray 😥 I can still smell it.

Tomorrow I'm going to rollerskate up and down the aisles in Safeway until they throw me out.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:50

mrs no that’s fine just make sure your mum doesn’t repeatedly stab your scalp with the metal pull thing like my mum did and she would also pull some bits way too thick so I ended up looking like a bloody tiger.

Gosh this has made me unutterably sad in a lovely nostalgic way. Gosh I miss being young. I also like now but oh those days.

brizzledrizzle · 02/02/2018 19:51

I;m off to the night club later for pernod and black at 50p a drink, it's wednesday back in the 1980s so women go in free even 16 year olds

bringbacksideburns · 02/02/2018 19:52

Shades and Toners!!!

Just been watching TV and it mentioned that Lisa Stansfield"s Been around the world is thirty years old Confused

I'm in!! But not sure which 80s me to be..
So it could be school girl 80s me. Crying at the bus stop because my mum won't let me wear tight jeans and pixie boots for the school trip. Buying Sun In and spraying my hair a fetching shade of orange. Using my peach skin scrub with the Swiss name or washing in Biactol then trying to cover my spots with clearasil concealing liquid. And always the same make up - sky blue eye liner, blue mascara, pink lip gloss and massive dangley earings.Taping the Top forty and waiting all week to watch Top of the Pops, then going into school next day to talk at length about it.

Or student 80s me. Wearing my dad's shirts with a broach at the collar, low slung belt, waspy belt, red lipstick. Drinking Thunderbird wine and getting ready to go out whilst watching Blind date. Dancing to The Smiths and The Housemartins and getting drunk on a tenner. Ringing home occasionally on the payphone on tge landing and putting a 50p in the electric meter that would last ages.

No social media. No phones clutched in hands every Minute of the day. No responsibility other than had I done an essay on time.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 02/02/2018 19:52

Yep that’s how we rolled too. I looked very like a demented blonde badger...

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:54

I’m going to bring my Rayleigh Whisp bike so I can bike round the village all day, without popping home (cause no one worried where you were all day in the 80’s) and I’ll wear my stonewashed skinny jeans with my baseball jacket.

MadisonAvenue · 02/02/2018 19:55

Totty same here. I've just walked the dog and started thinking back to Friday nights in the 80s when I'd be getting ready to go out - early in the decade to the weekly under-18s disco and then to clubs from the mid-80s.
I really do miss being that age, and it really doesn't feel that long ago.

shakeyourcaboose · 02/02/2018 19:55

BBC 4 currently showing totp hits of 1985! Was only 1 but the tunes!!!

FrankiesKnuckle · 02/02/2018 19:56

I'm gonna be late, the blakeys on my pixie boots have fallen off!

And Arthur was caught between the moon and New York City.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:58

I’ve got some Anne French cleansing milk if anyone wants to remove their disco make up later.

Downhillatfifty · 02/02/2018 20:06

In the spirit of this thread i’m listening to Absolute 80s radio ( I know all the lyrics Grin) and dancing round my living room with my granddaughter, we are going to have a sleepover and stay up late.

VioletCharlotte · 02/02/2018 20:09

This thread has made me feel nostalgic and a bit sad too. I wonder what I, as an 80's teen, would have thought of the 42year old me who, after doing the food shop, is spending her Friday night sat on the sofa, glued to her smartphone 😕

Boatsonthewater · 02/02/2018 20:09

Oh God, Anne French. I could cry with nostalgia
