I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

Going to the pub and everyone smoked
Drinking a half larger and lime added
Walking everywhere

Europe having different currency when you went abroad
Duty free being cheaper

I’m in black leggings with my dad’s dress shirt with a low slung belt from Chelsea girl and white stilettos.

Massive plastic bauble necklace and diamanté earrings. Hair is bubble permed and then sort of swept over one side of my head a la Sarah Greene.

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 02/02/2018 19:13

@Twoweekcruise luckily (for me) my DB didn't do that to me

frogsoup · 02/02/2018 19:13

Ahh, I want to stand in the (1980s) body shop and smell all the perfume glass wands now. I had forgotten all about that but if I close my eyes I'm right there again! I had a v happy 1980s - even if we were " this close to disappearing in a puff of atomic smoke.

VioletCharlotte · 02/02/2018 19:18

Who else was a Brosette? Stone washed, baggy jeans with turn-ups, white Tshirt, DMs, and a black bomber jacket covered in Bros badges from the market.

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 02/02/2018 19:20

@Twoweekcruise omg 😲 super mousse! Arctic roll is not the same anymore Sad, we never had vienetta (it's too expensive!!) but I'll bring the vicounts (I vant, I vant, a vicount) Grin

Globetrotter100 · 02/02/2018 19:24

Ice magic....from sauce to crispy it really was like magic!

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:25

I was a Brosette, I made my dad drink Grolsch so I could have the bottle tops on my shoes. I was convinced that if only I could meet Matt, he would see we were meant to be together, forever!

Can I come too? I'm going to start getting ready at 3pm for the bus at 6.30. Church hall disco starts at 7.
My massive, rolled up, white denim dungarees and torn hem bright pink t shirt are ready.

VanessaHelsing · 02/02/2018 19:29

I am 47. I wanna come back too, been watching videos on youtube today, Thompson Twins, Eurythmics, Human League, BananaramaGrin

I wore skintight jeans, leg warmers, flourescent ankle sock, one pink, one yellow, baggy jumper, BIG hair, can of hairspray on, gold nail varnish, Heather Shimmer lipstick, i still wear Heather Shimmer, its the only colour that suits me Blush

My and friend used to go to shop, buy a Wham bar and 10 B&HBlush secret fag behind the garages!

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:29

I noticed in the supermarket today that they still do the Bernard Matthews turkey rolls, that was a regular in our house. My dad would slice it up with the electric carving knife, god we were posh!

And while I'm there I'm going to visit my Nana and Grandad and tell them both how much I love them before I lose them forever.

CanIBuffalo · 02/02/2018 19:32

Ooh! Ooh! I'll pack my oversized dark purple mohair jumper. I knitted it myself and if the time machine breaks down all of us can huddle in it together for warmth. I'm sure we'll all fit.

Boatsonthewater · 02/02/2018 19:32

I love this post! I remember all that, but the 70's were SO much better!

LiveLifeWithPassion · 02/02/2018 19:34

I need to set my video to record V. My parents won’t let me stay up to watch it.

I was a spandau ballet fan.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 02/02/2018 19:34

I would go into town wearing my turquoise blue corduroy pencil skirt, matching bomber jacket, shoes, jumper and beret, all from Wallis.(And all in turquoise) OR I would wear my peach animal print DASH tracksuit that actually looks like I'm wearing my pyjama. Both look amazing.

I'd go to the Body Shop and buy some strawberry lip gloss and maybe some bath pearls (Love these!) , WH Smith to look at the pencil cases and Boots just to wander around. I'd go downstairs in Marks and Spencer to the food hall and get a prawn sandwich for lunch and something very chocolatey for pudding.

I'd walk home and watch tat on tv in the lounge as there is only the one tv in the house. Tea would be at 5:30 (not dinner) would be a M and S Tagliatelle (white and green pasta in a creamy sauce with sliced mushrooms) but my brother would have the tikka masala and it would all be eaten in front of the tv off the coffee table. Then we would all watch Only Fools and Horses, the Generation Game and maybe an episode of Poirot. Except my brother who will be in the corner trying to get his Commodore 64 cassette game to load.

Sunday will be boring but I will do a lot of reading, very much into Victorian literature, in my pink bedroom with my Austrian blinds. After lunch I will go to the nearest large hotel bar for a drink with my mum, aunty and gran. They all chat and I listen and drink my orange juice. Dinner will be maybe corned beef hash (M and S is only a Saturday treat) and then a lot more tv. We aren't that fussy and will watch anything.

Had a wonderful if very uneventful childhood, the 80's felt very safe. So glad I didn't have access to the Internet. We didn't even have a house phone till I was 16.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 19:34

Oh edith me too, miss mine every day. Miss my nan’s Oil of ulay smell and cremolia hand cream and I miss sleeping over and snuggling in flannelette sheets which had been heated up with the electric blanket.

Can I have a go? I have a presssing need to return to the 60s, though 1996 will do as long as my memory remains intact during the process.

fourmileswide · 02/02/2018 19:38

We can't go back to the 80's without watching Moonlighting with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd Smile and a visit to C & A Grin

yamadori · 02/02/2018 19:40

Top of the Pops 1985 is on BBC4 right now!!!

Globetrotter100 · 02/02/2018 19:40

Our home phone had a lock on it to prevent "unauthorized usage". No probs, careful insertion of a slim nail file allowed pressing of 100 so I could get the operator to put me through to whatever number I required Grin

SharonMott · 02/02/2018 19:42

Been off to the next village with my boyfriend. I rode pillion on his Yamaha 750. We sat at a mates and watched Happy Days. I had helmet hair! He dropped me off at home and I wore my sisters satiny looking shirt out that evening to a disco. We danced all night including headbanging to Status Quo. Got a lift back to another mates on the back of a moped and we watched a Hammer Horror film and I walked home having frightened myself shitless. Tomorrow we are going to watch Letter To Brezhnef at the flicks.
