I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

And who could forget this

MrsWinklepicker · 02/02/2018 16:31

I'm sulking because mum won't let me have a perm.....however still looking awesome in my pencil shirt teamed up with a reversible sweatshirt with a dalmatian on the front (only mine was a cheap one from the market which wasn't actually reversible) and pixie boots. I'm going to spend the evening picking bits of Wham bar out of my teeth.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 16:32

dust loved Dallas, my mum wanted to be Pam.
TSS I’ve got deeley-bloopers on the time machine, sparkly ones too!
Live just remember to pull out the little tab on the tape so no one tapes over your Dempsey and Makepeace
angular all welcome, the school disco starts 6pm though and we mustn’t be late.

Yes I'm there with you OP too!Smile

Paleshelter · 02/02/2018 16:40

I'm 46, love 80s music still so much, songs bring back so many memories. Wearing my ski pants and bat winged jumper when I was about 13- 14, gelling and spiking my hair. Have some bad memories as I was crippling shy and had few friends, remember "friends" falling out with me, now one of them works in my DC school and saw another yesterday, I just smile and say hello. Also my dad losing his job and having free school dinners. But a lot of good things, I was pretty but didn't realise it and thin! Wearing my Heather shimmer lipstick and second hand Levi 501s. Then leaving home and going to college in 1989 Smile

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/02/2018 16:42

Fire up the Quatro!

Can we watch The Young Ones before we head on out?

I'm hoping to meet Simon Le Bon at Romeo and Juliets (Bristols premier night club ) and I expect he will ask me to marry him. Should I double barrel my name with his ? Mrs MoastyToasty -Le Bon is classy innit?

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 02/02/2018 16:45

If I can find these, I'm ready! Oh yes I went there! Neon socks with sandals!!! I thought I looked the bees knees ConfusedHmm

Anasnake · 02/02/2018 16:46

I'm coming ! I'm wearing my campri ski jacket and have back combed my hair to death. Sprayed a whole can of impulse on me, got my roller boots and body shop kiwi lip balm. Hoping to snog that lad in the year above who looks a bit like Morten Harket.

SallyOMalley · 02/02/2018 16:47

I've got flu right now and I'm feeling really emotional. This thread has made me cry Blush

TSSDNCOP · 02/02/2018 16:48

Omg Princess thank god you posted from the signpost at Lands End? or we would have been wearing the same shoes.

aintnothinbutagstring · 02/02/2018 16:52

I want to go back to the 90s, I want to 'call for a friend', make up dances to Take That, watch Top of the Pops on a Thursday, the real start to the weekend not when it all started to go downhill and they moved it to a Friday! Or fast forward a bit and skip afternoon lessons, jump on the bus to town for 30p and dodge people that might tell on us.

Anasnake · 02/02/2018 16:53

I've been practicing my bananarama dance moves specially and cut out all the lyrics from smash hits so I will be sooo cool.
Anyone up for sitting on the floor doing 'oops upside your head' ??

tobee · 02/02/2018 16:54

Can I come too?. I'll be wearing my red baggie cotton trousers, my mustard yellow back wing jumper, purple plastic clip ons, gold eyeshadow, strawberry roll on lip gloss and be liberally doused in Impulse Nirvana. My hair will have tiny Adam Ant plaits in the fringe but I'll bring the Opal Fruits.

TheFaerieQueene · 02/02/2018 16:54

Shopping in Chelsea Girl
Everyone had the lipstick kiss dressing robe from Miss Selfridge.
Malibu and Pineapple
Being stopped by the river police for speeding in our speed boat along the river on a pub crawl.
My lovely mini - the best car ever

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 02/02/2018 16:54

Wow that OP just brought a lump to my throat. I don't want to adult anymore. I want to watch Mallets Mallet and Wackaday and spend all my pocket money in one go on a bag of wotsits, a strawberry cornetto and a More magazine (risqué!) then watch Blind Date and Catchphrase Sad

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 02/02/2018 16:54

@TSSDNCOP it is a good job, and I've got my Betty Boop top on under my Shell suit (how my dad didn't set us all alight with his cigarettes, I'll never know!) and TBF I'm not sure who borrowed who's socks?! Confused
Is that not where we are meeting?! Oops 🙊

glitterbiscuits · 02/02/2018 16:55

Shall I wear Impulse or Limara body spray?

Can I have a chocolate Banjo bar please?

I’ll do the Top 40 mix tape as I’ve got Maxell cassettes and a graphic equaliser!

Anasnake · 02/02/2018 16:56

Are we meeting at Wimpy or outside John Menzies ??

Globetrotter100 · 02/02/2018 16:57

I had a diamante brooch from Chelsea Girl that I wore "cowgirl style" at the top of my buttoned up shirt.

Also sunglasses with lenses in the shape of hearts.

😍

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 17:01

Can’t beat a bit of ‘oops up side your head’!
My Mini was my first car, loved her to bits and loved the fact I could pull out the choke at roundabouts to give me some extra oomph!
sally jump aboard, there’s no flu where we are going 😊

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 17:02

Aaah the memories. I remember my red suede pixie boots and a frilly shirt which buttoned up diagonally like a dentists! Very new romantic. Long fringes like Human League dyed with Shaders and Toners. Eye liner on the water line of the eye which washed off immediately and looked awful and very bright eye shadow colours. Tops by Pineapple worn with a low slung plasticky belt and bloused over. I actuallly found my own Blue Jeans annual from 1984 and marvelled at how unattractive the men were in the photo stories - no idea where they got them from because they certainly weren’t models. Grin

TossDaily · 02/02/2018 17:07

I'm going to put on my Fame sweatshirt, matching skater skirt, roller boots and burgundy legwarmers.

I'm going to have my hair in a side ponytail, and nick a bit of my sister's Lace perfume.

I'll rollerskate to the newsagents for my copy of Girl magazine, Applause bar, can of Quatro and packet of spicy tomato Snaps.

When I get home I'll watch children's telly for a bit - Educating Marmalade, Dangermouse, Dramarama and Grange Hill will be on.

Then I'll watch The Adventure Game and a nice sitcom, like Fresh Fields or Never The Twain.

Sigh.

TossDaily · 02/02/2018 17:08

And if it's the summer holidays I'll watch Why Don't You and reruns of The Monkees and The Littlest Hobo.
