I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

I can't decide whether to wear my pink cotton dungarees, or some pedal pushers. Whichever I decide on, I'm going to wear them to with my dad's V neck jumper on back to front and a set of plastic pearls cascading down my pale and spotty back.

I'll bang on the front window of the top deck of the bus when I get there. Get me a Pernod and black please.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:06

The seventies was my favourite era but I am more than happy to jump on board. Maybe you could drop me off on the way?

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 02/02/2018 15:09

60s first then the 70s for me aswell please.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:09

I am increasingly starting to believe that ignorance is bliss. We know too much - if you don't know you can't worry about it. A lot of the big stuff you can't do anything about anyway so what's the point of knowing about it.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 02/02/2018 15:11

And what does Frankie say?
I'm sure you time travellers remember.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:12

I am actually listening to 70's mix on a loop right now; 'oooh now baby please don't go...' wonderful.

MissWilmottsGhost · 02/02/2018 15:12

I'm almost exactly the same age as you OP.

But I hated the 80s then and still hate it now. Too many bad memories for me I suppose, the music doesn't fill me with sweet nostalgia, more likely PTSD flashbacks Sad

I had to go to an 80s themed party a while back. Still had the stiletto boots, huge white silk shirt and leather bomber jacket, and the massive hoop earrings. Had to put on a wig though, no way I'm having another perm, there are still hilarious photos of me kicking around somewhere of the one my mum gave me when I was 13 Hmm

Much preferred the late 90s and naughties. Give me a bit of grunge anyday Smile

Annwithnoe · 02/02/2018 15:12

Can I come and sit on the stairs watching all my big sisters friends getting ready to go out? And when you lot are all gone and I’m supposed to be in bed going to sleep, I’ll experiment with your Constance Carroll make up.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 02/02/2018 15:14

The video shop where you could pick out Streets of Fire or St Elmo's Fire and swoon over the Brat Pack, wishing you were Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald. You might even get to sneak out one of the video nasties that were anything but!!

picklemepopcorn · 02/02/2018 15:16

You may not need a time machine- I saw ski pants in a shop last week, along with ruffled shirts. No puffballs, sadly.

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:16

I've noticed that when we post as 'us now' we can sound so different, yet when we travel back to earlier times in our lives we sound very similar, (if similar ages) like we grew up on the same street and knew eachother. Shared experiences and feeling remembered though we don't know eachother.

picklemepopcorn · 02/02/2018 15:16

Oh yes, and the eyebrows and the contouring. I mean yes, they blend it these days, but we know how it should be done.

dustarr73 · 02/02/2018 15:19

Ah my heart is aching for that time.Listening to Madonna, going to school discos.Having my lovely grandad, going to the pub on a Sunday morning wiht him.For a lemonade.

Going in to Cassidys and trying my hand at make up.Such innocent times.

Hoppinggreen · 02/02/2018 15:20

I’ll be right there wearing one white lace glove and peach stilettos .
You’ll recognise me by the badly applied electric blue mascara.
I will be chewing gum and seductively popping it and whirling it around one finger.
Please can someone call me on my CB radio ( 1-9 for a copy) to let me know where we are meeting?

dustarr73 · 02/02/2018 15:22

And dont forget your fingerless gloves and leg warmers to complete the look.

When everyone fancied George Michael and Tom Cruise was Cool

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:22

This is true - about three mornings ago I woke up and was singing my heart out - 'Crazy For You' Madonna. Well, it felt like I was. I asked my husband if I was but he heard nothing actually come out of my mouth. I remember thinking 'he'll hear me but I don't care!' as I was doing it.

GameOldBirdz · 02/02/2018 15:23

I wasn't born until the mid-1980s but can I come anyway?

MadisonAvenue · 02/02/2018 15:27

I'll join you after I've watched Brookside, I've got a crush on Barry Grant.

dustarr73 · 02/02/2018 15:27

StealthPolarBear · 02/02/2018 15:28

Oh yes bath pearls. Left a blob of sludge stuck to the bottom of the bath after the water had drained out

crackerjacket · 02/02/2018 15:28

I'm with you. Life was better in the 80's.

Willow2017 · 02/02/2018 15:28

I'm in once my sprial perm is finished. (if I dont die from the fumes first)
Mine is a 'purple passion' if you are buying first round Grin
Will wear my black 'knickerboker' trousers and an oversized white shirt and waistcoat and stupidly high stilletos (which will be killing me by 11pm) or my crushed velvet bodysuit and long skirt.

I have the cherrry lip gloss in the glass tube and 'Heather' lippy too. I only use 'White Musk' during the day, I have gone upmarket and have 'Poison' for the evenings, proper sophisticated me Grin
Pass the spangles please.

crackerjacket · 02/02/2018 15:29

Oh go on then Dave

I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.
WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:30

"Peach stilettoes and electric blue mascara!" I want them NOW!!

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 15:34

I smell cherry lip gloss, harmony hairspray, Charlie perfume, leather jackets and pink bubble gum.
