I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Just for the weekend.
They’ve just played ‘Together in electrics dreams’ on the radio and it’s left me aching for my youth.
So, for just this weekend only, I don’t want to be almost 45, I don’t want to keep hearing my kids squabbling with each other, I don’t want any responsibilities or to worry about the state of the world.
No, what I want is to go to the school disco tonight, I want to spend hours perfecting my gaudy sparkly make up, I want to wear my new ra-ra skirt or my batwinged jumpsuit, I want to hot brush my hair into an 80’s flick (with the help of a whole can of ozone-unfriendly hairspray!) and I want to smear my lips with that spearmint flavoured lip gloss from that little glass bottle with the roller ball and dance the (earl Your) evening away to Wham!, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Madonna and the like.
When I get up on Saturday morning (about 10am, I want to watch kids morning tv, for breakfast, I want my dad to cook his famous French toast (eggy bread really but French toast sounded posh), I want to go into town with my mates and buy the No.1 single from Our Price, I want to go to Top Shop and look at the posters in Athena and have a knickerbocker glory at The Wimpy. I want to spend the afternoon watching Knight Rider, Chips, The Fall Guy, Murder She Wrote, Hart to Hart and The Golden Girls.
On Sunday, I want to help dad wash the car in the morning (never did that in real life but my nostalgic brain tells me I did!), I want to eat my mum’s lovely Sunday roast and not worry how many calories, saturated fats, gluten or other nasties are in it. I want to see my much loved and missed grand parents and hug our lovely beloved family dog.
But most of all, I want to tape the Top 40, being careful not to get Bruno Brooke’s voice in at the end of each song ( that took great skill and judgement!)
So, does anyone fancy joining me for a trip back to the 80’s this weekend?
Refreshments on the journey will include, Panda cola, Clearly Canadian, Lilt and Quatro to drink and Spangles, Marathon bars (NOT snickers!), fruit salads and black jacks and 54321 bars ( E numbers included, yum!) to snack on.

For the drive there

EraArils · 02/02/2018 15:44

I've got a new jelly bag in yet another disgusting colour. I need to find a new carrier bag to use with it so my stuff doesn't full out of the gaps. My hair is a lovely orange colour just at the front and I'm looking good in my brown corduroy knickerbocker trousers and oversized pattern aigle jumper.
I've also prepared my tape for the top 40, it's my Dad's Don Williams tape that I have sellotaped on the corners.

I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.
MamaLupine · 02/02/2018 15:45

Can I come too please? I'll be doused in L'Aimant perfume and sporting shimmery pink/lilac Constance Carroll eyeshadow. With Avon 'Iced Champink' lipstick.

BrimFire · 02/02/2018 15:45

Christ no. Music was shit, TV was shit and I had a jumpsuit I could never get out to have a wee or a bodysuit I could never get out if to have a wee.I was too fat for skinnies the the first time round and horribly self concious.

School was rough as fuck. Bullying just was. I quite liked that champers and being posh was a thing towards the end of the 80's but unfortunately that meant I thought my nice accent and decent brain would see me through when in fact I needed a plan and and some guts.

Readermumof3 · 02/02/2018 15:46

I want to do all that OP too almost 48

If people are bringing their fellahs I am bringing my new guy. I luffs him.

I’m building a time machine, to go back to the 80’s.

Your all welcome aboard but there’s too many of us for just a weekend, let’s do a whole 1980’s year. I want a 1980’s Christmas when the living room was decorated EVERYWHERE, even had tinsel and shimmery crap draped from the ceiling, those paper things that opened up concertina style and a lovely plastic Christmas tree covered in lametta and fairy lights that shorted out all the time. I want to hear Whams first Christmas for the first time and go back to when Christmas wasn’t Christmas without a proper sized tin of Quality Street and I want a proper chocolate orange with the middle bit left in it.
Oh and I want a box of Weekend chocolates from my nan.

Oh this thread and every thing on it is making me so wistful. I am the same age as OP

I will come along but only if we all go to Roller Disco on Saturday afternoon followed by a milkshake in McDonald's (but only if we aren't too late home)

I shall wear my black ski pants, pin heel shoes and oversized yellow satin shirt. My hair will be Permed (by my mum's friends daughter, she did a shit job and I still cannot forgive her 30 years on)

AFingerofFudge · 02/02/2018 16:03

Gosh it made me cry a bit too! You described my weekends so perfectly (well, you missed the bit about reading Jackie and Just 17 and pretending I was in one of the photo stories) right down to missing out Bruno Brookes' voice on the Top 40

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 16:05

I did the Jackie and Just 17 thing too 😉

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 16:07

I loved an oversized satin shirt, would piss my mum of though if I got any grease marks on them but hey! why would I worry about that when I didn’t do the washing ( making up for it now though, karma and all that for being a bloody lazy teenager, my poor mum!)

I've got my pixie boots on and I'm coming to join you all!

WingsOnMyBoots · 02/02/2018 16:08

Jackie. Blue Jeans. Photo Love. My Guy. Look In.

fourquenelles · 02/02/2018 16:09

I was 30 in 1985 so older than most here but...........................

...........although I never managed the extraordinary hair and steaks of blusher, I do want to wear the men's suits I bought from the charity shops with added shoulder pads and the floppy black bow ties. I want to spend my time after work in wine bars watching the video of When Doves Cry on a huge screen suspended from the ceiling smoking Marlboro reds and drinking cocktails. Ahh nostalgia.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 16:12

Oooh, pixie boots, I’ll bring my green ones that I got from Freeman, Hardy and Willis on the High Street.

Green pixie boots Envy mine are boring burgundy Blush

Ihatebuildabear · 02/02/2018 16:18

I was born in 1978 so a bit young for the 80s but this thread makes me nostalgic. Just having no responsibility would be lovely! Although I did hate being constantly nagged. How am I almost 40 with two kids a husband and a mortgage?

theHitcher · 02/02/2018 16:19

I'm in. White kicker boots, black leggings, white satin shirt and a huge low slung belt around my hips. And a mullet perm that looked great for a month then grew out, so it was lank and flat at the roots and frizzy on the ends for the next six months, Pina collada is my drink and my car is a black ford XR3i

dustarr73 · 02/02/2018 16:22

The ultimate cliffhanger

TSSDNCOP · 02/02/2018 16:22

I was telling my friends in the school coach whilst listening to Zoom that we were meeting you tonight. We are all wearing our leg warmers because we watched Fame last night, and dead jealous because an older big sister was in the audience at TOTP last week and deeley-boppers got handed out. Last weekend I got new Pepe jeans and my Nana's taken them in so they make my knees hurt but look like Brian May awesome. I've got Stu Stu Studioline mousse on my David Bowie sun in'd wedge that I showed the stylist a picture of the blonde girl from Human League to get.

LiveLifeWithPassion · 02/02/2018 16:22

Well if we re going out, I’ll have to set my video recorder to record the Dempsey and Makepeace. Can’t miss that.
Might play a game on my Zx spectrum, if I can wait for the half an hour it takes to load the game.

Twoweekcruise · 02/02/2018 16:24

Dh had a black XR3i, he added go faster stripes on it and red lights in the front grill like Knight Rider, we thought we were the bollocks going round and round the ‘curcuit’ (the High Street!) every night.
