AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

yorkshapudding · 02/08/2015 16:51

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

OP please don't go out tomorrow first thing so you're like to be in when if the builders arrive . Grin

BillyJoel · 02/08/2015 21:01

Hopefully the builders will turn up, leave, and charge your wonderful ndn for a morning's time wasted as she did not provide what she needed to to let them work.
Last thing you need is a noisy generator going for two days in the back garden. Noise and exhaust fumes....

purplepandas · 02/08/2015 21:04

They are batshit crazy! Not you at all.

oldbrownboot · 02/08/2015 21:04

Your neighbour is WEIRD. Who makes a plan based on a neighbour being there without even checking with them? and it sounds like you aren't even that close to them? and normally at work? feel sorry for you having days off and having to listen to all that noise though. that's what they should have been coming round to see you for - to apologise in advance for the noise.

nb garden clearing generally uses a lot of petrol powered tools (chain saw/ hedge cutters) as the electric ones aren't as powerful. So don't feel guilty.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 02/08/2015 21:14

Ah ok thanks. I'm guessing leccy is an UK-ism? I've never heard it before.

loveareadingthanks · 02/08/2015 21:18

electric

yorkshapudding · 02/08/2015 21:18

You must be joking, Maya, I'll either be out or hiding behind the sofa Grin

I hate confrontation or awkwardness. If they do knock i'll probably just panic and end up shouting "NO WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS!" and slamming the door in their confused faces.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/08/2015 21:20

apologies for the confusion caused by my use of the slang term leccy. odd thing is i would never use that in RL, i think i caught the accent from reading about the death of poor dear Cilla Black Blush (no doubt that will also confuse any non uk readers, but hey, there's always google)

8misskitty8 · 02/08/2015 21:24

Another one who thinks the builders will turn up tomorrow thinking that you are providing electric etc. for them.
Neighbor is basically assuming your happy to pay for part of her work being done as essentially that is what you would be doing by providing electricity, water, cups of tea etc. What a cheek. How did they ever think you'd agree to it !

If the builders knock on your door i'd feign ignorance. "Sorry neighbour never mentioned it to me. Can't help i'm afraid as i'm out all day." or simply don't answer the door.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/08/2015 21:24

xposts with Annie, sorry, I am not deliberately trying to confuse our non uk readers, leccy is a slang word in a very few specific parts of the uk, and a well know celeb with that accent has just died, so there have been quotes and clips etc doing the rounds in that accent.

gamerchick · 02/08/2015 21:25

I really want you to say that now OP Grin

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/08/2015 21:29

NO WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS

I think we should all adopt this as our how-to-get-rid-of-nuisance-phonecalls response, so much more fun than just saying no thank you! Grin

expatinscotland · 02/08/2015 21:30

'I know, I know, none of this is my fault so I mustn't cave in..'

FGS, yorkshire, stop being such a mug! NOthing to do with confrontation or awkwardness. They can charge your NDN for wasting their time. Be a good example to your kids, no one learns anything good from being a jessie. Take £40 and set it on fire, go on, do it! Because this is what you will be doing if you allow your NDN's to use your power for this. At least.

They are pisstaking fuckwits.

dustarr73 · 02/08/2015 21:32

The thing is though is NDN left it till last minute to ask you so its all pre meditated. So yanbu in saying no.

SchwarzwalderKirschtorte · 02/08/2015 21:34

Weeping bicycle monkeys. I have just nearly wet myself laughing while oh looked Hmm

FryOneFatManic · 02/08/2015 21:41

I'm sure it was premeditated.

And despite you saying no, I'm also sure your NDN has convinced themself that when the workmen do turn up, you'll cave in.

I think being out at around 8am, when they're likely to turn up, will make it clear you're not available. Although, personally, these days I'm happy to make it clear that I'd told the NDN that it wasn't convenient.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 02/08/2015 21:43

NO WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS HERE

Am about to print that out & stick it on my front door

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 02/08/2015 21:48

Please don't apologize Phantom. MN is, after all, a U.K. site. Smile

MrsKCastle · 02/08/2015 21:52

Stay strong, you must NOT cave and order them bicycles. Let them weep in the bushes if necessary.

Best advice is probably to be out first thing.... But I really want you to be in so you can update us all!

VitaminCrumpet · 02/08/2015 21:53

Please update tomorrow OP. I've got a dull day at work sorting out the new rota, so I will be refreshing this thread every five minutes hourly occasionally.

mayaknew · 02/08/2015 21:56

No York you need to be in so you know what NDN has told the builders .

And by "you" I mean "you and all us nosy MNers" GrinGrinGrin

If you go out you'll never even know if they turned up let alone were assured that you would be accommodating them .

Fizrim · 02/08/2015 22:04

OP, stay strong and be mean - I want those workmen weeping in the bushes within the first 10 minutes. Don't let me down. Don't forget to update either.

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 02/08/2015 22:07

Eagerly awaiting the weeping bicycle monkeys tomorrow. Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 02/08/2015 22:08

Have you any building work you need doing yourself op? So when if the builders turn up you can say breezily 'oh yes, slight change of plan, ndn wants this thing doing here' Wink
