AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

Paula, I think Jack Black would do a grand job Grin

Although, you're earlier suggestion of Jake Gyllenhall for a hunky builder was, sadly, way off the mark. One looked like Phil Mitchell. The other one was like that blonde skinny bloke from The Office whose name I can never remember...

Your instinct to cast Jenniffer Anniston in the role of Moi was, of course, spot on. Am the spitting image of her...if she sacked her stylist and her personal trainer and developed a tendency to turn up for work with remnants of her toddlers Weetabix down her top.

That's what happens when you go away when you're having work done. If you don't employ a project supervisor then you are the supervisor and it's your job to check things are being carried out correctly even if the job seems small.

paulapompom · 05/08/2015 20:01

Right yorksha, we are part cast - I'm sure Jen and Jack will come on board - shame about the builders though! Wine Cheers.

PegsPigs · 05/08/2015 20:28

So the work that took place in their absence wasn't done to their satisfaction? Who'd have thought it! Grin

DartmoorDoughnut · 05/08/2015 21:04

yorksha are we putting bets on the NDNs next bit of twatiness? If so can I put a fiver on them trying to bill you for the new fence as you got the nice side? Ta mutely Flowers

DartmoorDoughnut · 05/08/2015 21:04

muchly not mutely

dustarr73 · 05/08/2015 21:12

I bet NDN comes in and tries to blame op for the crap work that they thought they got.Nothing to do with them at all.

Didactylos · 05/08/2015 21:26

at least NDN wasn't there to argue with the builders about which way round the fence goes, so you got the correct side

DonkeyOaty · 05/08/2015 21:37

Okay. Weeping in bushes, bicycles and ordered not offered! Hilarious!! Proper belly laugh. Will carry on reading now.

DonkeyOaty · 05/08/2015 22:11

Well KARMA huh. You get the "nice" side of the fence. Hah.

CrispyCrispBag · 06/08/2015 12:55

DonkeyOaty and don't forget bedding said weeping bicycle monkeys on the fence Grin

londonrach I saw that you'd made a Classics nomination but I think the more the better, no? Come on MN Powers-that-be, this needs to be preserved for posterity!

Incidentally, I've been tasked with organising costumes for the Flying Monkeys in a production of the Wizard of Oz (yes, really) and the director looked at me strangely this morning when I insisted that they need bicycles!

BeccaMumsnet · 06/08/2015 17:08

Hello everyone - we'll pop this over to Classics now Grin

prettybird · 06/08/2015 17:08

I reported the thread: said it had everything - Next Door Neighbour Dramas and Weeping Bicycle Monkeys, so what more did it need to go into Classics?! Grin

I've had a reply saying they're going to pop it over.

redshoeblueshoe · 06/08/2015 17:52

Rebecca Wine

MrsHathaway · 06/08/2015 18:08

What colour are you going to paint your side of the fence, OP?

[innocent]

Pedestriana · 06/08/2015 18:23

Monkey brown? That'd be a nice shade for a fence.

CheerfulYank · 06/08/2015 19:12

Of course posts go on the inside! Shock What a twonk.

VulcanWoman · 06/08/2015 20:49

Cheerful, fence posts can go on what ever side you want. My neighbour is putting a new fence up and my side will have the post and her side will be neater with all the panels flush but when I had the other side done I had the posts and horizontal posts my side due to the kids next door and climbing! I think I remember you saying you're American, so different fence types but maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick with your post, apologies if I have.

Pedestriana · 06/08/2015 20:57

One of these?

AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?
MrsHathaway · 06/08/2015 21:01

Love it, Pedestriana !!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 06/08/2015 21:51

Aw, I was hoping there had been an update from the OP on this....that the NDN had been around and was again unreasonable and demanding a response as to why the OP hadn't let their builders use the OP's electricity, water and such like....

Please come back OP and let us know if anything new has happened between you (completely reasonable person) and your delightful if deluded NDN.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 06/08/2015 21:57

did we find out WHY the op gave them bikes?

Are we in the Uk or China?

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 06/08/2015 22:42

China? Confused

LovelyFriend · 07/08/2015 09:24

Totally taking the piss. It's not my water or electricity is be bothered about. You are being asked to project manage their improvements. I wouldn't want other people's workers in my house. And as for being tied to the house all day unable to pop our ets, fuck the fuck off.

Who arranges for work to be done and goes away if they aren't prepared for the builders to have a key. Beyond weird!

RandomFriend · 07/08/2015 09:43

apparently they were supposed to do some other stuff that they haven't done

The builders were too busy having lie-ins and sunbathing to get on with the extra work. That is what happens when there is no supervisor. It was ridiculous of NDNs to leave the house when builders are there.
