Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Don't poke it.

You might anger the mother.

timeforabrewnow · 14/05/2015 10:58

Wowser - that is big!

WellErrrr · 14/05/2015 10:58

ughhh It's making me itch!

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/05/2015 11:02

Oh, it's got to be a fungus, surely?

Looks like it's inside the walls and bursting outwards

OP, is the fungus-infected outhouse attached to your house?

grapejuicerocks · 14/05/2015 11:02

Anyone else hoping it isn't just boring old mould?

highlighta · 14/05/2015 11:02

I am going to guess at some type of weird ant nest... the fact that they have taken soil in, i reckon there are plenty of what is in there as in thousands, in there..... to build something like that overnight.

I am not helping am I..... Wink

Absofrigginlootly · 14/05/2015 11:04

Wow that is huge!
Why don't you email the pics to an insect expert (I'm sure a quick google search would find you lots of university links).

Don't poke them though you might kill or stress it. It might be a rare species..... Let's be honest, if there was a species of man-eating months in the UK we would have heard of them! I'm sure you're in no danger!!!!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 14/05/2015 11:05

that is pretty big! Sorry am a bit stumped as my knowledge is Aus-based, rather than UK. I would say perhaps hawkmoth of some sort, as others have suggested.

Moreisnnogedag · 14/05/2015 11:06

Actually I think it might be worse if it's mould because only evil mould looks like that. You would have to burn the outhouse down rather than just run away from a moth.

Moreisnnogedag · 14/05/2015 11:07

Ah no abso we've never heard of man-eating moths because there's been no survivors...
