Struggling

Afternoon. Does anyone know of anywhere I can get food today for me and my daughters. Struggling to make ends meet completely now as a single mum to 4 and no food banks are open today. Thankyou

You had a very similar thread back in October. Did you get sorted then?

Was it the same poster? Lots of posters have appealed for help. I would be calling SS personally, if I had absolutely nothing in at all, no help I could ask for from anybody at all, and needing emergency help to feed the children.

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:42

Surely that would be a last resort there's other help available out there just not all open on weekends

OP posts:
ColdBlueSky · 11/01/2026 15:44

If you have absolutely nothing for them
or you to eat then you need to use that last resort.

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:46

Do you know how terrifying it is to do something like that? I'm scared as it is I was only asking if anyone knew of anywhere open today for some help

OP posts:
oocooloo · 11/01/2026 15:46

Would a neighbour give you something, then you repay it when you can. I know lots are in the same boat, but if I were your neighbour I'd give you what I could.

This is going to sound harsh OP, but did you not realise before today that you'd have nothing food wise in? Sundays or weekends in general are the worst times to be in bother of any kind. Wishing you well and hope you get sorted.

oocooloo · 11/01/2026 15:48

BTW check out your local church or mosque. They sometimes have food on offer for those in need. Are there any homeless charities or soup runs around the place? I know it sounds tough, but people do use these services, so why not you?

SmittenApple · 11/01/2026 15:49

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:41

They have already eaten today I'm struggling for tea and tomorrow ect that's why I'm asking if anyone knows of a food bank open?

What have they eaten already.

any joy on the olio app? If it’s poor weather…. You’re more likely to be in luck because people won’t want to venture out

ColdBlueSky · 11/01/2026 15:49

That’s a good idea re the neighbour. I’d happily give food to a neighbour in dire straits- but not money.

What is more terrifying for you op is your 4 children going to bed ravenous and heading off to school lightheaded.

Ring SS. Explain difficulties with finances and would benefit being signposted.

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:51

Yeah I've tried neighbour's alot of them are alot younger and alot worse off than me so that didn't work but yeah I'm the same I'd give my last to help whoever I could, thankyou x

Call your local authority/council out of hours numbers. Mine have emergency discretionary funds for things like this. They will also know what is available in your area.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/01/2026 15:52

Do you have neighbours, OP? I’d gladly bung one of our neighbours a bag of pasta and jar of pesto to do tonight, and some bread/honey/peanut butter/marmite or whatever for toast for breakfast tomorrow.

We’ve had loads of snow this last week and i actually gave one neighbour chicken curry I’d made on Thursday plus some other basics - the shops were absolutely empty (no deliveries getting through) and he was just back from being stuck out of town over Christmas.

BIWI · 11/01/2026 15:52

I’m sorry, but you must have something in your cupboard/fridge/freezer that you could use.

somanychristmaslights · 11/01/2026 15:53

Go onto the local Facebook page and ask on there. When I’ve seen that in my area, people have been very accommodating. There’s no shame in asking for help. What are you putting first, your pride or your kids welfare.

I have asked repeatedly. Even if a slice of bread.

and the answer was absolutely nada

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:53

I'm sorry but no . If I had I wouldn't be asking if anyone knew of a food bank open would I?

OP posts:
SmittenApple · 11/01/2026 15:53

You can do an anonymous FB post

BIWI · 11/01/2026 15:54

So absolutely nothing? And you left it till Sunday afternoon, when most places will likely be closed?

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 15:54

I've stated 1 million times no .. If I had this post wouldn't exist

That is why I would not bother asking if you had anybody you could ask, and suggested what I did, because you would be going to who you know, if you could, instead of asking here about food banks. It is better to reach out for help, rather than struggle like this. There may be ongoing resources that could be open to you, that you don't know about. I would have thought that SS were there to help.

Sarahlouisemamofgirls · 11/01/2026 16:00

I've asked everyone I could possibly ask this past week, we're just trying to get through day by day taking each day as it comes just today was a bit harder that's why I reached out

OP posts:
oocooloo · 11/01/2026 16:02

I'm so sorry that none of your neighbours could or would give you even a few slices of bread, a few teabags, a half cup of milk and so on. Are ALL people that hard up now?

It's making me think either they are not charitable, don't want to know, or are in dire straits themselves. What a time to be alive. However I'd give my last crumbs to stop 4 kids from going hungry. I'd go out an buy it if I didn't have it. I'm so sad about how hard it can be for many under the radar.

I really appreciate my blessings. If I lived near you OP you would not be hungry for another minute, and that's not me putting a halo on, it's what people would do where the situation is genuine. Well I hope they would.

pocketpairs · 11/01/2026 16:03

As another poster suggested, you should probably reach out to local church or mosque, that's probably your best bet at 4pm on Sunday.

Ragruggers · 11/01/2026 16:06

Do you have a church near you? If so find the vicar and where he /she lives and knock on the door and ask for help.In my town we have a community larder anyone can use it.It is closed at the weekend but someone who volunteers would help you today. It is worth trying. The children must have food today and breakfast. Then tomorrow seek out where to go for help in the future.I wish you well.

NadineMumsnet · 11/01/2026 16:06

Hello everyone

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon. We've compiled some useful links posted by Mumsnetters into a financial issues webguide, so that people experiencing difficulties can find all the relevant information in one place - we hope that it's useful for you.
