@anotherbrewplease I think we needed to know the amount held in PB to know how shit the return was. There's no need to be arsey about it.

properdoughnut · 25/09/2022 07:45

I literally only have £250 in bonds now! So it's more of a "forget about it" pot and see if I get lucky. I got £25 when I had £750 so I think I've probably used my luck!

Hearthnhome · 25/09/2022 07:49

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 07:00

Me, DH and my parents all have full holdings.
Me - £25
DH - £25
Mum - £25
Dad - £0
So £75 on a total investment of £200,000 is pretty rubbish!

Yep - so why don't you all invest somewhere else then?

Nice that you're all so rich though.

Why on earth do so many people come on these threads to have a moan at people?

I have been a single parent on the bones of my arse. I just can’t imagine going onto a thread that’s about money, just to have dig at people.

If it’s not ‘oh you only premium bonds because you don’t know how to invest’ it’s ‘well count yourself lucky you have any at all’

Its bizarre

RubbishDay · 25/09/2022 07:58

Knowing the holdings is useful for those with full and those with only a small amount.

It shows it is about chances. I haven't done well last two months on full holdings but people with less have. That's the 'game'.

Personally for me it still makes sense to leave mine with PB and just hope I do better next time.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2022 08:08

Yes I create These threads for a bit of free fun of omg I may win a million. Or £25. Or nothing

yes those who have £50k will prob win more and have better odds and returns

but we all know that some lucky ones win £10/25k on a few thousand /low holdings

It’s like that guy we had come on and tell us silly mummies about how we could get a better return etc.
Yes we could, but I don’t care. I like the fun of having bonds. I like that there is no risk. I want to be able to get at my money when I like and I’ll do what I want with my own money thanks.

And like a pp I too have been on the bones of my arse and I don’t begrudge anyone having full holdings.

@savingsthreads HSBC Expat

UrsulaPandress · 25/09/2022 08:47

I like PBs because it’s so easy to get access to the money. If I can only remember which Grandfather’s job I used for a security question 🤔

Wasn't that the same investment genius that had remortgaged his house to go all-in on Bitcoin? Wonder how that's working out for him? </schadenfreude>

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 11:17

Yep - I’m grumpy that someone is moaning about having ‘bad luck’ when they’re talking about 4 x lots of full holdings and a snapshot of 1 month.

Im fully aware of how luck works - and personally I have had excellent luck with premium bonds, and know that 1 or 2 months without a win can soon change.

That doesn’t even make sense.

You are annoyed, on a thread, where we post month by month updates that someone posted their months update and felt it was rubbish?

and they can’t be disappointed because they have full holdings?

The fact that you are grumpy, is your own issue. No need to try and be arsey with other people who are posting on a thread designed for this very thing.

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 11:29

@Hearthnhome

yeah yeah - whatever you say. I’m sure you’re completely right in all you do and say your whole life long. Thanks for being a thread monitor and giving me a jolly good telling off.

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 11:30

By the way - it made perfect sense- no need to be so rude. I was trying to explain better!

An so you are allowed to tell people off for posting. But people reply and they are the ‘thread monitors’.

Grumpy and a hypocrite. Nice!

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 11:32

😂

anotherbrewplease · 25/09/2022 11:33

Sorry - I didn’t understand your post. What does hypocrite mean in this context?

properdoughnut · 25/09/2022 11:34

We're not stupid. We know what we're doing with our money.

UrsulaPandress · 25/09/2022 12:34

Whoa.

This used to be a nice thread.

It is and will be again. Especially when I win the million next month 😆

FlippertyGibberts · 25/09/2022 13:00

I'll be insufferable if / when I win the top prize.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2022 13:14

Now now all. Be nice

I agree that with £200k one would expect a few prizes

I would also love to have £200k lol

UrsulaPandress · 25/09/2022 12:34

Whoa.

This used to be a nice thread.

It's standard MN these days, so many angry people on here.

Pemba · 25/09/2022 14:26

Well it's not really £200K, that poster is talking about her mum and dad and her partner, so really it's two separate families.

And you don't know the person's circumstances, you can't assume they're rich. Like me and DH have almost full holdings each but we don't own a home. In our late fifties! Due to bad luck and mistakes with money along the way. Fortunately DH just came into some family money, so with that and our savings and moving to a slightly cheaper area we will be able to buy in the next year. So relieved! But then we'll probably have no Premium Bonds after that..

And on this thread we're just talking about returns, it is quite neutral and no need to make value judgements about other people's (perceived) wealth, or lack of.

Hollyhead · 26/09/2022 12:27

Changing the subject a little, does anyone know when the prize fund is likely the be changed to match interest rates? 1.4% now looking to be a crappy return.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/09/2022 12:33

@Hollyhead I know. For the last 5-10 years, I've piled spare money into PBs because the payout rate has always been higher than our ultra low interest lifetime tracker mortgage.

However, we're now paying just over 2.6% on the mortgage and it's starting to look expensive compared with the PBs payout rate, especially as they're talking about increasing interest rates again. After a conversation with DP last night, I'm seriously considering taking most of the money out and paying off the mortgage after next week's draw. Which will be a cause for celebration, but a little sadness that I'm effectively out of the PB game.

But as a strong believer in sod's law, if I take most of my holding out, they'll increase the payout rate substantially.
