Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Dr's advice on waiting to conceive after missed miscarriage

sausagemcgrah · 17/10/2008 12:43

I underwent medical management 2 weeks ago for a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks. I visited the Doctor today, and was advised that I need to wait for at least 1 if not more periods as there is 'an increased risk of miscarriage' if I were to get pregnant again straight away. My Doctor is normally very good, and I would not question her word, but I have not read this anywhere. Is she right? I hope not as the thought of being pregnant again soon is the only thing that is getting me through this!

HI GATEAU its all very confusing isn t it? Very surprised you had such a small amount of bleeding!!! I bled post medical management 10 days stopped for 4 days then intermittent spotting for 3 to 4 days.I have been in touch with my EPAU are you able to do the same for some advice? although they do tend to say its all individual, which doesn t really help!!! Good luck

Thanks louise.
Yes, rang EPAU y'day and was told to wait another week as it was normal to bleed up to two weeks after med management.
I really hope this is 'normal' and I don't have to go in for more medical management or an ERPC. Like you, I just want to move on and start thinking of TTC again!!
Have you stopped bleeing then? Are you expecting your AF?

Hi Gateau See above i had repeat scan 1 week ago which was proceeded by 6 hours of fresh bleeding!!!! Rung the EPAU the day after ? wheter it was my AF? However i was informed it was too early {2.5 weeks post med management}.Nothing since, this friday will be 4 weeks since soo me and DH have decided even if no AF will start ttc next week as could wait AGES for AF.

Find it very awkard this spotting as can t swim as much as like to just in case and HATE wearing pads!!!

Hi Gateau,

Ii'm no help afraid, but didn't want to ignore your post. I didn't bleed post medical management until my period about 29 days later. But then I have no idea if that's normal or not. I think anything is possible. My period was much more 'clotty' than usual though. It's all so confusing isn't it? How confident were the medical staff that everything was passed when you underwent the medical management? Did they book you in for any scans? I wasn't booked in for any, and it has left me feling unsure of my body and what it's up to, as I have lost confidence completely in my body and my ability to tll what's going on anymore.

Hi Louisesh. Sorry to hear it's all still a bit unresolved for you too. For what it's worth, despite having what must have been my period, as I was saying above, I stll feel like I don't know what's going on! I think I feel tricked by my body after a missed miscarriage and don't feel like I can trust anything or know anything for sure now.

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and had a mc on Friday at 6 1/2 weeks. Having taken 23 months to conceive, I was absolutely devastated and really do not want to wait to try again (I'm 39 and time is marching on) I'm having some positive moments (such as reading some of the really uplifting stories on here) and some real downs, such as thinking that it was only when we went on holiday that I finally conceived and there's no chance of that happening again in the near future, so what chance is there? Please tell me this is normal?? I also only bled for 3 days, and still feel a bit crampy, so should I expect more?

Thanks for your post, sausage.
The dr at the hospital seemed to be pretty certain that everything has passed, and let me go home without a scan. Dr did say I might have bleeding and some clots though, but not to worry about them unless bleeding got heavier or clots got bigger.
Bleeding still (touch wood!) seems to have lessened and go browner (sorry for TMI!!). If it turns out that it hasn't by after this weekend, then I'll be ringing the EPAU on Monday and asking for a scan.
Good luck and keep in touch everyone.
G.

Hi all,

I started to miscarry 5 weeks ago this coming Sunday - the hospital & doctors were pretty rubbish and I am still confused about loads! I had an early scan on the Thursday before the Sunday that i started to miscarry, it showed no heartbeat, only sac.. even though dates were at 7+4.. the EPU sent us home and said to go back 10 days later, which would have been a week the following Monday, unfortunately we didnt get that far and i started to miscarry nauturally on the Sunday morning, i bled for 5 days... Went to the Drs on the Thursday to try and get some answers, but they were really unhelpful and just said 'unfortunately its just my body's way of saying it wasnt ready'.. A lot of help!! They told me after the bleeding had completely stopped, we could start trying again straight away, there was no medical reason to wait.. we have been trying since then... I have not had a period to date (4 weeks + 5 days since I started to miscarry) but I am just too nervous to do a test at the moment in case it shows as negative... I know it can take up to 6 weeks to get period again, so I am trying to hold out for those 6 weeks before testing.. does that sound stupid?? 1/2 of me wants to do it so that i just know.. the other 1/2 doesnt want to in case its negative and i am back in this situation at the end of next week if i still have no period... Sorry that this is really long winded, you might be surprised to know that this is the first time i have sat down and written/spoken about everything with anyone but my partner.. all family know are basic facts..

Has anyone had a period 4 weeks after misscarriage or am i probably more likely to be waiting for the full 6 to be up?

I am sorry to hear of everyone else's losses, I know I am lucky to have stumbled accross this forum...

ashleighbeee so sorry to hear about your loss. My period came 5 weeks and 2 days after my miscarriage. I normally have a very regular 2 day cycle.

But im praying that its good news for you and you dont get your period for 9 months now!

My GP today said there is no need to wait - it would be good to get AF first so that dates are firm, but if it doesn't happen that way, then it doesn't matter because a scan will provide a date.

I must admit, it was the news I wanted to hear

Thanks Sabs and Louise

I think I'll get comfy over here first and maybe move over in a month or so - the thought of letting DP anywhere near me at the moment is not pleasant and I need to let the unexplained fits of violent crying and other hormonal oddities calm down first.

My GP made me laugh actually - it was a telephone consultation and she made me pass the phone over to DP so she could warn him about the violent mood swings he is likely to bear the brunt of for the next few weeks days !

Louise - I don't mind you asking

it all started quite violently on Tuesday afternoon with scary torrents of blood and stuff Wednesday was equally bad and painful, then I had a scan yesterday to confirm the worst is over and the bleeding has slowed down a lot. Mild cramps this morning but nothing to what they were thank goodness. I've actually managed to get up and dressed and consider leaving the house today

Jools make sure you get plenty of rest and be pampered - I am very sorry to hear about your loss..

My misscarriage seems so long ago now and feels like it was just a bad dream or somethng - the days were just a blur.. The first day i went out (day 5 of the miscarriage) I walked to the doctors and then cried the whole way home! The day after decided i needed to be back at work... perhaps too soon but it did help take my mind off it. Once the horrendous cramps passed I had mild cramps for 2 days - more similar to usual period pains, then stopped bleeding.

Well... I finally plucked up the nerve to do the test last night... the test didnt bloomin work, we had an evaporation line or something similar (or thats the explanation they give on the trusty web) so bought a digital one this morning - no way having to deal with that again! It showed 'not pregnant' after the 3 mins, so now just waiting for my first period!!

Louise! It seems we're in the TTC club together.. We're going to keep trying! If no period by next Sunday i will do another test as that will be the 6 weeks up that the GP told me to expect to wait.. I dont know if my cycles are regular as have been on the pill for 5 years & got preganant the first month I came off... so hopefully it is longer than i thought and i will see 'pregnant' in the test window soon...

At the moment, I'm thinking I might go back to work next week - is that too soon ? My GP will sign me off if I want, but told me to wait and see how I feel on Monday morning.

I had over a month off in March for a really horrible bout of gastroenteritis - so am worried about being off again for too long

I had a month off as work in a clinical area with my own caseloads in the nhs and it is manic and knew i wouldn t get any rest if i went back sooner.Have really enjoyed my time off and been in touch with friends at work a lot but also "chilled" and been out with friends and had my hair done and treats etc... like that!!!

Been to gps this a.m signed fit to return to work going back monday feels its time for me to go back, time to return to normal.{although saying that only got 2 weeks back then off to bruges for 3 days and got leave for a week!!!}My colleagues are very supportive and understanding , my managers off sick {with something very minor} soo can t say anything and we re only suppose to have 4 episodes in a rolling year before being referred to occupational health and i think i m there but as i ve got a sick note are not concerned 1 bit as what are they going to say???? If you can t be off work following a missed miscarriage when can you be????

Hi girls, So sorry for all your losses.
I went for my 12 week scan on Monday and was told that the baby had stopped growing at 7 weeks. I just felt something wasn't right as had stopped feeling sick, sore boobs etc but didn't want to believe it. the hopsital were really great and I opted for medical management for my missed miscarriage. Went to hospital Wed and had to stay overnight and have to do a pregnancy test on 4th Dec to make sure everthing has passed. They told me it's best to wait till after my first period to TTC again but at the moment don't know if I really want to, will see how I go. Am going back to work on Monday as been off all week and my work don't know what has happened except my boss who is lovely. I just want to get on with my life and be normal again if you know what I mean and don't want the pressure of people excpecting me to pregnant anytime soon. I suppose its really upto the indiidual as everyone feels different and I know someone was told to TTC straight away as your hormones are all over the place and you have a better chance!

Good luck everyone, whenever you decide is the right time for you.

Hi blink55 Sad news again It happened to me on Tuesday, but I never got to my scan - started bleeding really really heavily a couple of hours before.

Be kind to yourself and think hard about work on Monday. I'm finding my emotions are getting more extreme and uncontrollable as the days go on. A lot of people have told me that you feel worse after a few days and it is hard to be at work during that time.

My GP has told me to phone her on Monday and tell her how I'm feeling - she may then sign me off but wanted to leave it open for the weekend.

Do give yourself some time xx

The one month advice is to get the dates right in the following pregnancy. As far as I understand, there is no medical reason to wait any longer.

I know someone who came out of hospital after having a miscarriage and got pregnant immediately. It was all okay in the end but the dating did cause a problem because the baby was breech and there was a lot of fuss about when to do the c-section.

I always can feel when I ovulate so, providing that continues post m/c, I will hopefully have no issues with dating, so am not too worried about that.

My GP seems to think that, if you are unsure of dates, a scan should be able to confirm to within a few days - might take a couple of goes, depending on how far along you are when you go for the initial one, but I am sure it is possible ?

HI BLINK55 Sorry to hear about your loss. i hope you re recovery is soon it seems a very short amount of time for the 4 th of december for a negative test.I hope you get 1 though, my tests are still postive, although fainter each week after 4 weeks post medical management.

I m not waiting for my AF before ttc, thought i was getting it this week as felt some period symptons but soo far nothing!!!!

You may need longer off work you have to take it on a daily basis i ve had a month off just returning on monday and had a lovely time pampering myself and seeing family and friends.

I m sure with regards to dates with all the technologhy available due dates is not a major problem, if no AF before conceiving.
