Dr's advice on waiting to conceive after missed miscarriage

I underwent medical management 2 weeks ago for a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks. I visited the Doctor today, and was advised that I need to wait for at least 1 if not more periods as there is 'an increased risk of miscarriage' if I were to get pregnant again straight away. My Doctor is normally very good, and I would not question her word, but I have not read this anywhere. Is she right? I hope not as the thought of being pregnant again soon is the only thing that is getting me through this!

Soo far had 2 weeks off.Off to see the dr tomorrow and going to be asked to be signed off for another 2 weeks as very busy at work and know i ll be thrown back in at the deep end as soon as i go back.My colleagues very supportive and vast majority of them have been in touch constantly.Theres a few "firsts" i need to get through like going back to the gym as the last time i went i was "pregnant" {or thought i was} and going back to work as , obviously, the last time i was there i was, or thoght i was. "pregnant".I m tackling all these one by one and will feel better each time 1 of them is out of the way.Want to get through next month then i can start trying again.

HI SAUSAGEMCGRAH Hope all is well. Can i ask you a question? {a bit personal i m afraid} in one of your previous entries you said you thought you were going to start your period soon have you had a period? and if so how long after your medical management was it? Hope you re still enjoying your cooking. Finally went back to the gym anf feel better for it.

Hi Louisesh, I'm doing okay, thanks for asking. Confused as ever though!

I actually started my period this morning weirdly enough! It's all very weird though, as I did another pregnancy test on Friday (which was exactly one month to the day of the missed miscarriage) and it still tested positive. Hmmmmmmmmmm. And my period has been very very odd, in that it feels like a period - very crampy and same period symptoms as usual, only there has not really been any blood. (Well - obviously a little but nothing really! Sorry if TMI. I wonder if it will get heavier over the next few days?

How are things with you? How long post miscarriage are you now? Hope everything is ok?

HI I m doing ok.Its just over 2 weeks since my medical management {17 th oct] stopped bleeding 10 days post same but then started spotting for 2 days si i am been a bit naughty!!! I rung the early pregnancy unit and they informed me that if i was still bleeding tomorrow to ring them and they would re scan me which is what i m going to do then i ll have the confirmation everything s ok.Then i can get on with life. MMM... your period does sound odd doesn t it? Nothing is black or white is it? I ve resumed all "normal" activities , including those with my husband. [although we are using something at the moment untill i have this scan} then i ve decided if alls ok then we may just go ahead.Dont really see the point in waiting for my period as long as i feel ok.

How are you emotionally? still cooking?

Gateau · 03/11/2008 08:45

Re the OP's initial question, I had medical management for a missed m/c on Sat and the dr told me the advice was to start - if I wanted - TTC 4-6 weeks after the bleeding had stopped, whether I had had my first proper period or not. However she said if I conceived before the 4-6 weeks there was no problem and it meant my body must be ready.

sorry for your loss...

I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks and a erpc. About 1 week later I ovulated and fell pregnant.. I knew I was pregnant before I had missed my period... I went on to have a healthy DD, who is 12 now...
I was also told to wait but I couldn't see the point.. mind you I was paranoid all throught the pregnancy kept going to the toilet to check things were ok

louisesh · 03/11/2008 14:10

I VE arranged a repeat scan for tomorrow , that ll be 18 days post medical management due to some erractic bleeding. Then onci i ve got the all clear from the scan i m going to start trying again.I also don t see the point in waiting for my next period.

Sabs1981 · 03/11/2008 22:27

HI everyone.Very complex day again!!!! Had 2 scans orginally thoght there was some retained products left or my endometrium was inflammed ? due to an infection but, upon review by the consultant was informed that the histology had been performed on what i had passed on 17 th oct{date of my medical management} and i had passed the products of conception and there was no abnormalities with the same. Finally the conclusion was reached that the medical staff attributed what they had seen today due to cycluar changes.{sorry if that spelt wrong!} Basically to do with my menstral changes and that i should wait my period then all should be well.they ve offered me a repeat scan in jan but said if i concieve before then not to worry!!!
Again very confusing!!!!

sausagemcgrah · 04/11/2008 19:15

Hi everyone,

louisesh, I'm glad you got some answers today, and it all seems to be as it should be. I think alot of what we ned to do now is relax and let our bodies get back to normal. A lot easier said than done! I'm sure your 'real' period will be along shortly. I am positive now that this bleed I've been having is definitely my period. Lots of pain and (as usual TMI) an increase in blood to a definite period amount. I thought my period would bring a huge sense of relief and a distinct turning point in that we can now try again knowing dates and that I should in theory be ovulating. I am a bit sad though, as I don't feel excited like I thought I would. Even having a period has been harder than usual - a constant reminder of loss, and the process of the loss itself. I really am an old misery lately! Anyway - let's hope that things don't take too long now, and I 'get in the mood' sooner rather than later!

Who knows what that positive pregnancy test was all about 2 days before my period came though - weird!

Sorry if that was all really lomg amd whingy and boring.

How are you feeling louisesh? Are you still feeling very down or is it getting better?

Thanks gateau and mumrum for your help and advice.

louisesh good luck for the next few weeks.

sausagemcgrah you're not alone. AF for me came last thursday, 3 days after MC. I just spent the day crying, it brought back so many memories of what I went through. Don't feel you are going on because you're not. That's what we're here for, to listen to you...sending out big hugs

snoangel144 · 04/11/2008 22:14

Im sorry for your loss. I am awaiting a miscarriage right now. I have been waiting for 2 1/2 weeks with no signs nor symptoms! Anyways, mine was obviously a missed miscarriage also and my dr told me to wait one to two cycles and then jump right into it again. He didnt say anything about an increased risk. I have a friend that also had a miscarriage, waited a few weeks and then got pregnant the next month without even having her cycle back! Her baby is now older. Anything is possible!! Everyone's body is totally different, but lets hope for the best. I know you must be devastated and its so hard to hang onto hope in fear that it will happen again. Remember...one in every four. My Dr said my first was healthy (she is two now) and my second didn't make it. He said my third and fourth will be perfect and my 5th I will most likely miscarry. I think he was just telling me this to show me how common one out of four is. Well, best of luck to you and I! I'm sure this next one will take and the babe will be perfect. Best of luck to you!

louisesh · 04/11/2008 22:54

HI SAUSAGEMCGRAH I m not too bad thanks managing to keep my spirits up but still confused think have started my period tonight!!! Will only be 2.5 weeks since m.mc is it possible to have period soo soon? Going to ring EPAU tomorrow, think there ll be sick of me!!!! Hope it and not some possible complications {see earlier entry} as then we can start trying maybe next week.A bit fed up of stop start bleeding as stalling me from returning to normal life ie: swimming etc....? if can use tampax again {must ask tomorrow}

Thanks SABS1981 for your kind thoughts.

Gateau · 05/11/2008 08:56

I agree that post-miscarriage is a VERY confusing time, with monthly cycles pretty much up the shoot!
But yes, it is possible to be your period, Louisesh.
I had an ERPC back in June and my AF came 17 days later. I too was surprised and spoke to a dr at the hospital who said it could well be my period.
I had my missed m/c on Sat and have already stopped bleeding. We are going to start TTC now. I haven't a clue if/when I'll ovulate but we're just going to go for it.
Good luck everyone and keep posting!!

louisesh · 05/11/2008 09:59

Hi GATEAU Sorry to hear about your loss its hard isn t it? Have rung the EPAU this morning and they seem to think its too early for it to be my period.Sick of spotting all the time just hope my period will be here soon!!! SAUSAGEMCGRAH how long did your period take to start? was yours intermittent at first?

sausagemcgrah · 05/11/2008 18:21

Hi everyone,

snoangel, So sorry to hear of your loss and what you ,must be going through just waiting for it to happen. Thank you for your kind words though, and sabs too. Wow - your period came back early sabs. How are you feeling now? Are you TTC again or waiting for a while?

Gateau - So sorry to hear of your missed miscarriage too. How are you feeling? I stopped bleeding very early after my medical management, and we started TTC again straight away in the end. Good luck to you.

Louisesh - Hi there. Hmmmmmmmm and Arghhhhhhhhh for you! It's just all sooooooooooooooooo confusing. I think I read a period could come anytime after a miscarriage, and if you've had a decent break with no bleeding I would have thought it was your period? It must be terribly frustrating spotting sll the time. I really feel for you. If it is your period you will feel so much better when it's over and you can start to get back to normal. My period came after about 29 days and started lightly at first, but we're on day 4 now and it's still going and fairly heavy. I wastold to use tampons for the first few periods after a miscarriage due to increased risk of infection. (And HATE pads. Another GRRRRRRRR!)

Anyone going to see any fireworks?

OP posts:
sausagemcgrah · 05/11/2008 18:22

Oops - told to use pads not tampons.

louisesh · 05/11/2008 19:05

Have been working out that its now nearly 3 weeks since MMC so i could well get my AF next week. Can t believe its gone that quickly since the first week {the week from hell}.Thanks for your information SAUSAGEMCGRAH i know i hate pads too!!! They feel soo bulky.A bit upset today had a good cry then pick my self up and get on with it if i get my AF next week can try again soon.

Not off to the fireworks can see them from our house anyhow!!! Everything takes soo long!!!!! SOO FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!

sausagemcgrah · 05/11/2008 19:43

Hmmm - just read my last post back and it makes no sense. Sorry about that Louisesh. So have you been spotting / bleeding without a break since the miscarriage which is why they think it's not your period|? And how are you supposed to know when it is your period then? Very confusing. I was surprised when my period came as thought it would take longer for my body to get back to normal. Who knows what will happen eh|?

Hang on in there. Your body will get back to normal soon I'm sure.

louisesh · 05/11/2008 23:02

Finished bleeding 10 days after medical management then started spotting again intermittently for 3 days {old brown loss} this time, then stopped for 6 days then following the scans y.day bled quite heavily for about 4 hours last night fresh loss!!! Then again none today!!!! Sick of it!!! Now 2.5 weeks since medical management so at least next week i ll be coming up to a month and hopefully approaching my AF!!!! Bit sad today come and goes!!! Thinking about xmas and the thought that i would have been showing something by then. Oh well keep my spirits up nearly time to try again.

Sabs1981 · 06/11/2008 09:07

sausagemcgrah my message should have read 38 days after, not 3! (bloody keyboard!) waiting until the new year to ttc

Gateau · 10/11/2008 09:26

Hi,
I had medical management nine days ago and the doctor felt I had passed everything. I was discharged that day.
I had little or no bleeding until the last few days when I have been noticing blood on the toilet roll most times when I go to the loo, and this morning I even had a few small clots. Is this normal to have nine days later?
Have also created another thread abotu this as I'm so desperate for an answer/advice.
