MMC at 12 weeks

Hi,

We unfortunately found out at our 12 week scan that baby had no heartbeat and was measuring about 10+4. We had a scan (NHS - they had our dates wrong) at 10 weeks and all looked great.

They have offered 3 options - see what happens naturally, medication to induce misscarriage, or surgical under GA.

I have the booklets with the medical perspective but was wondering if anyone has had this experience at similar dates and would/would not recommend any of these. Obviously the added covid19 bit is that for either medical option my DH couldnt come to be with me.

Many thanks x

That’s really good to know @TheDaydreamBelievers I’ve had this for a few days now off and on and it’s really annoying as I don’t know if it is anything as I was advised I could experience this.
I really appreciate the heads up on that as I actually would probably panic and pick an option if I didn’t get a chance to think about it. Is there an option to have it tested? I think I remember reading that on another post somewhere

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/12/2020 14:46

Argh I replied to you @PumpkinEverything and it hadn't posted. In short, in NHS Scotland they always test MMC tissue for molar pregnancy but wont offer any more testing until a 3rd miscarriage (let's hope we do not get to this stage).

The options are more about what you want them to do with the fetus and other pregnancy tissue eg to cremate it, pass it to you for burial etc

@TheDaydreamBelievers I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had surgical management of my first MMC, with baby measuring 11w 4d. It was a little scary going for the surgery but I was in and out on the same day. Recovery was reasonably quick which really helped.

Next MMC baby was measuring 9-10w. I was only offered medical management due to COVID. The sac got stuck in my cervix, the pain was excruciating. Days after procedure it transpired that I had retained tissue and had to return for a Non Surgical Vacuum Aspiration. This was the most traumatic experience of my life. Again there was retained tissue and I ended up with a womb infection. Last week I finally got the D&C to remove remaining tissue. The pain I'm in is much better than before but I'm still battling the infection.

This miscarriage has been even more horrific due to the multiple failed procedures etc.

I'm not telling you the above to scare you. But from my experience, I would strongly recommend going for the surgical D&C management option from the outset. Purely to reduce the chance of ending up like me.

Whatever option you go for, please make sure you take time off work to recover. Don't rush back, it does no good. Seek support from friends and family, don't bottle things up.

Be kind to yourself Daffodil

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/12/2020 15:10

@sakuramiyagi I am so sorry, what you have been through is awful. I have now had surgical D&C under general and it honestly went about as well as it could do and recovery is okay. @PumpkinEverything is having surgery on monday and I'm sure she will find your post helpful xxx

Hey @TheDaydreamBelievers how are you getting on?
TMI but I've barely had any bleeding at all today and last night which I'm really surprised about as I'm only 2 days post procedure. I certainly expected a hell of a lot more!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/12/2020 16:14

@bez91 same - v little bleeding even on Monday night and Tuesday morning (procedure was Monday evening). I bought mega absorbent, overnight design Always pads and havent used any pad at all in 2 days! Have had basically some brown stained blood and the odd bit of sticky red blood but only on wiping. (May as well go for full TMI haha).

Havent needed painkillers at all today or yesterday.

Tempted to test tomorrow to benchmark where in at, as I think hormone levels are on their way down - boobs no longer solid and definitely variable emotions in past 2 days!

@TheDaydreamBelievers same 😂 I bought some maternity pads last week thinking I was being prepared! But yes only really anything on wiping 🤷‍♀️ not that I'm complaining.

I thought this, I said to DH I'll give it 2 weeks then test but I'll probably end up doing one next week 🙈 if you do let me know how you get on x

PumpkinEverything · 04/12/2020 16:39

Just wanted to jump on here as well (hope that’s okay!). Went for my blood test this afternoon and I had to get two more scans to confirm everything and then sign some forms and they did mention what to do with the pregnancy after the surgery (thanks for the heads up on that!)
I’m now booked in for Tuesday morning as they don’t have space on Monday, and I’ve to go for a covid test on Sunday morning.
One thing I did notice on the scan is that the baby no longer looks like it did last week, and seems more shapeless, and also has moved. The scan last week showed it more on the right side of the photo, whereas now it seems to be on the bottom, and I don’t know if I was seeing things, but it looks like it’s nearly where it would be as if it was going to come out? I don’t know if I’m being silly, but I have suspicions that I’m booked in for Tuesday instead so they can see if this happens naturally. Could be wrong though!
They were all really nice and went through the options with me again to make sure I was definitely making the right choice for me, and also said to come up for an early scan next time if I’d like the reassurance.

Still got some lower back pain and small cramps. Tuesday seems so far away 😔

TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/12/2020 09:07

Hey @PumpkinEverything hope you have some space and time to relax this weekend.

That must have been hard to see on a scan - I didnt look at my pre - surgery scan. Even though it was me that requested it. I asked for it because I just needed to know for sure and have another health professional confirm that it was really over. But I didnt feel the need to have a look myself again and thought it would just upset me.

I hope your body holds out for surgery now and doesnt get going too much. My main tip for surgery is bring a good book, headphones and a charger for your phone!

Thank you @TheDaydreamBelievers this week has been better than it could have been as I took the week off, and my husband has been working from home. So I’ve had lots of time to mope about and take time for myself.
I was worried about looking at the scan as well, but then I decided that I should as maybe it would help me get closure on it being able to see for sure. They offered photos again but thankfully I had got one at the last scan which was a more baby like photo that I’m now very happy to have.

Thank you for the tips! I wasn’t 100% sure what all I need and they don’t give you a list or anything and just told me to bring an overnight bag just incase. I absolutely hope I do not need one as I just hope it all goes okay and I get to come home as soon as I can! Did you have any issues with the tablets that you had to take in the morning beforehand? My SIL has been through this twice and said one of the times made her really sick and lose a lot of blood which has freaked me a bit!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/12/2020 14:39

@PumpkinEverything they told me it could make me bleed but... nope! Did make my hands itchy thoufh!

bez91 · 05/12/2020 21:18

@TheDaydreamBelievers how random, hope it stops for you soon and it's not causing you any pain.

bez91 · 05/12/2020 21:25

Whoops posted too quick @TheDaydreamBelievers still no more bleeding here. I do have this strange sensation when going for a wee of downward pressure and intense cramping for a few seconds.
My hormones have taken a bit of a hit today too, I've unintentionally had a go at DH because he hasn't yet partaken in moving the f*king elf on the shelf yet 😂

angel0071987 · 05/12/2020 21:31

I was 16weeks. Wasn't allowed the surgery outright as a huge delay and they wanted it sooner rather than later so had the tablets. Had to be admitted to the delivery unit and have her there. In a side room off the main unit. When we left cue happy new parents walking out with us and down lifts too ...

TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/12/2020 22:12

I'm so sorry @angel0071987 - that sounds like an awful experience that you had. I'm sorry for your loss

PumpkinEverything · 06/12/2020 10:55

Eep @TheDaydreamBelievers has it settled down any? Would it be a possibility for you to work from home or take a bit more time?

@angel0071987 I’m so sorry you had to go through that. That sounds absolutely horrible 😔

TheDaydreamBelievers · 06/12/2020 16:58

Calmed down today @PumpkinEverything! I'm hoping I'll be grand at work tomorrow. Cant wfh I'm afraid (NHS clinician)

@angel0071987 so sorry to hear of your loss and experience

@TheDaydreamBelievers I also spoke too soon, bleeding returned yesterday albeit not a lot although I did have a very active day if that made a difference 🤷‍♀️ how are you getting on?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 07/12/2020 08:08

@bez91 my bleeding return was after an active day too so maybe we overdid it. Did a PT this morning and still showing positive so levels dont seem to have dropped too much in a week
