Empty pregnancy sac

I had a scan on Thursday when I thought I was 11 weeks. They could see an empty sac which measured 5 weeks. I know my dates are not that far out.
They took bloods and informed me my hormone levels are high suggesting that my dates are right and my body isn't getting rid of the pregnancy
I have to go back on Thursday for another scan. I am bleeding and have cramps. Has Anyone had a similar experience and did you miscarry naturally?
I just feel in limbo right now 😞

I know @VenusStarr, I am thinking of asking the sonographer at my follow up scan tomorrow to just tell me what they see as I am not keen to see the emptiness again.

@Samk79 I'm a teacher and reached out to someone senior in my school who could advocate for me and help arrange me cover for the week, and then I have been open with my headteacher who has just said I should take next week off as well. I have found talking openly about it (mostly by email/text - out loud is harder) helps me feel less isolated, however it's really hard to explain to people why I am still out as I don't think most people understand or care to know that it's because I still have the sac inside and am terrified I could start miscarrying any time.

@chocolatelog Best of luck to you tomorrow on your surgery, how are you feeling today?

chocolatelog · 17/03/2019 15:55

I've started bleeding in the last hour. My op is booked in for tomorrow. Will I still need to go?

VenusStarr · 17/03/2019 16:50

Sorry to hear that @chocolatelog it might be worth going for them to check you over? Flowers x

Samk79 · 17/03/2019 17:05

@chocolatelog I agree it's probably best to speak to the hospital and see what they say. I've been bleeding for 4 days now

@VenusStarr I agree that it completely messes with your head, my stomach is still so bloated today, I have a proper bump 😞

@coconutlatte44 is it tomorrow you have your repeat scan? I feel the same as you terrified That I could miscarry at any time, Especially as I am bleeding

They said to me before my op that if the bleeding ramps up/I pass clots then to drop by the EPU before my op to check. Adds another layer of stress though for you and it's hard to know if you've passed the pregnancy or not (I thought I had, but hadn't). Sorry you're having to deal with this.

sophied1983 · 17/03/2019 18:33

Bleeding doesn't necessarily mean your body has got rid of the pregnancy - I bled for two weeks and it was still in there. It's so hard to know.

coconutlatte44 · 17/03/2019 18:46

Hi @samk79, yes it's tomorrow, but in the evening, so still a while to go yet. My bleeding has mostly stopped today after it seemed like it was getting a bit worse the last few days. I am hopeful they will be able to book me in quickly after my follow up so I don't have to wait too much longer. In my mind worst case is that they find some growth and ask me to come back for another scan in the future, even though with my dates and the measurements from my last scan there is no way the pregnancy is viable. I also don't want any bits of false hope as I have come to terms with the reality.

@chocolatelog Definitely call before you go in, as everyone has said. Thinking of you and wishing you strength to get through this!

Samk79 · 17/03/2019 19:08

@sophied1983 I keep wondering if I've passed it but don't think I have, have been bleeding for 4 days now
@chocolatelog and @coconutlatte44 good luck to you both for tomorrow, will be thinking of you both xx

chocolatelog · 17/03/2019 20:30

Thank you all. I called the hospital and they said to still go in and they will scan me.

The pain is so bad in my back, feels like really bad period cramps. I've not passed any clots just red blood.

namechangechanger · 17/03/2019 20:38

I found out in January that I'd had a MMC went for a scan at 8 weeks baby was only measuring 6 weeks with no heart beat. I went for a further 3 scans to confirm the MMC and chose to do the natural route. I've bled LOADS for weeks and passed something I thought was the sac two weeks ago and went back for another scan this week - the sac is still there and now I have the surgery anyway. Wish I'd just gone for it in the first place now instead I've let my body try and miscarry for over a month 😖😖

VenusStarr · 18/03/2019 07:10

I'm so sorry to hear that @namechangechanger ❤️ when is your surgery planned for?

Thinking of you @chocolatelog x

Hope you're OK @coconutlatte44 that's my worry too. My dh doesn't agree though, he feels that if there's no growth then that's conclusive but if there is growth and still no baby that's also conclusive. I remember the nurse telling me that their cut off is 30mm and my sac was 22mm so part of me is stuck on what if its not 30mm, will this drag on 😔 I hope things go as well as can be expected for you today Flowers

X

Samk79 · 18/03/2019 07:18

@chocolatelog I the same as you, still bleeding but not sure I've passed anything yet

@namechangechanger sorry to hear you have been through this. I'm going to opt for the surgical option if I have to x

@Samk79 I'm a bit of compulsive researcher and have gone into overdrive with this the past few days, so am pretty certain we will both meet enough criteria to be diagnosed at our next appointment. My sac only measured 15mm, which is about 6 weeks, so almost a full 2 weeks behind my dates - but even if I was off by 2 whole weeks (literally no way this is the case) there should still be a yolk sac visible by the time the sac is that size. I guess you are in the same boat. Agreed that lack of meaningful growth is probably also enough for them to diagnose at this point.

@chocolatelog Sorry you are in pain, hope that you get everything taken care of today.

My appointment isn't until this evening so am trying to get some work done from home to keep myself busy today.

chocolatelog · 18/03/2019 09:53

Thank you @coconutlatte44 I'm on the afternoon list which starts at 1pm.

I had to get up at 5:15 this morning to have a cup of tea and some breakfast before 6am. It's not even 10am and I'm starving already 😩 it's going to be a long wait.

Good luck to you for this evening x

coconutlatte44 · 18/03/2019 10:13

Oh, that's the worst - I get hungry really quickly so I understand! I had a surgery a couple of years ago with the same situation and I was the last person called in at like 4 PM, I was absolutely dying of starvation by then!

Thank you!

Samk79 · 18/03/2019 13:05

@coconutlatte44 on the same, I have done lots of reading up over the weekend. My sac measured 10 mm and I thought I was 11 weeks. Like you say as there was no yolk then it's not viable and I know my dates are not that far out. I'm bleeding a lot more today

@chocolatelog thinking of you today, hope you dont have to wait too long

OP posts:
namechangechanger · 18/03/2019 17:33

My surgery was today. It all went ok and was a lot easier than I expected. I would definitely say to go for the surgical as natural or expectant whatever they call it has dragged this out for me since January with ridiculous amounts of bleeding and pain and then still to be told the sac is there was just horrible. I'd never do the waiting option again if this was ever to happen to me again I'd ask to do surgical straight away. (I can't do medical because of asthma)

Samk79 · 18/03/2019 18:08

@namechangechanger
Glad your surgery went okay, make sure you rest lots. I'm still bleeding which is heAvier but no idea if I've passed the sac 😞

OP posts:
VenusStarr · 18/03/2019 18:49

Glad your surgery went well today @namechangechanger, hope you get lots of rest and take some time for yourself ❤️ sending love. I think I'm going to ask for the surgery, initially I didnt want it but am very scared of physically miscarrying and don't feel I can deal with uncertainty of when it will happen.

Sorry your bleeding is heavier @Samk79 when are you back for a check up? Have you decided about work? The GP signed me off until my next scan and has referred me to gynecology to speak to the consultant about my fibroids.

Hope you're both OK @chocolatelog and @coconutlatte44

chocolatelog · 18/03/2019 19:24

Thanks girls for the well wishes. My surgery went well, just waiting to be discharged now xx

Samk79 · 18/03/2019 20:09

@chocolatelog glad your surgery went okay

@VenusStarr I've called in sick this week, I have my follow up scan Thursday and am going to opt for surgery if I haven't passed everything. I've been bleeding for 5 days now

@coconutlatte44 hope you are okay

Glad to hear about the positive surgery outcomes for @namechangechanger and @chocolatelog, hope you heal up well.

My appointment tonight was a bit of a let down, as I was transferring to a different hospital I was under the impression they were going to do a consultation and follow up scan but turns out the scan needs to be booked separately.

I asked him to tell me looking at my measurements whether he could give me some more clarity about this actually being a miscarriage and he said he couldn't because their diagnostic criteria is gestational sac>20mm however when I pushed him a bit I was able to get him to say that if my dates were correct then yes the scan would suggest a miscarriage. However, looking around at research I just don't see any way that this could work out as I got my positive test on the 12th of February so there is just no way my dates can be so far off that they couldn't find a yolk sac/embryo at this point. I wish someone would just say this to me.

I am really scared of letting a bit of hope creep back in while I wait for this confirmation as I have come to terms with the situation and I can't face the idea of getting hopes up and then having them crushed on the next scan.

On the positive side there is a chance that they can book me in for both scan and (tentative) surgery on Wednesday if they find a slot - so fingers crossed for that (messed up that I am now crossing my fingers for this).

Samk79 · 19/03/2019 06:52

@coconutlatte44
Sorry to hear you still don't have a definite answer, fingers crossed you can get your scan Wednesday.
I had my positive test the end of January, they said the sac measured 5 weeks 3 days and according to my dates I was 11 weeks 3 days. There is no way my dates are that far out

I just wanted to thank you ladies for all your support over the last week. This time last week I was on an antenatal club with everyone looking forward to their 12 week scans 😞

OP posts:
chocolatelog · 19/03/2019 07:06

Same here @Samk79 Ive just crossed of the calendar my 12 week scan that was next week 😔 I'm feeling very sad this morning and barely slept last night.

I've also woke up with a lot of pain that comes like contractions and in waves. It's mostly down below where my uterus is. Just waiting for the I rodeo to kick in because it's quite sore. Is this normal? Also I don't know if I need to keep my compression socks on? I'm guessing not because it only a short op. I also didn't know I'd be coming home with injections that I have to put in my belly. Dh was going all queasy when the doctor was showing him what he had to do 🙈 dh is a little girl 🙄

Samk79 · 19/03/2019 07:15

@chocolatelog
I'm guessing the pains are normal but not sure as I haven't had the op done. That's surprising you have to have the injections done.

I have to go back for the re scan on the day I was meant to have my 12 week scan 😞x
