I am 49 and 9 days late for my usually regular cycle. Is this the age where periods start to go irregular?

My cycle never returned after having my DS at 36. I just started to get periods randomly every 3 months or so.

Kittycooo · 28/05/2022 07:26

Wow @SilverGlassHare ! How old are you now if you don’t mind me asking

I’m 48 and on HRT.

In the last six months I’ve had two occasions where my period has turned up every 14 days, after years of every 25 days.

So that’s fun.

@Kittycooo 44. It took a few years of doctors fobbing me off before they did blood tests and ovarian ultrasounds and then admitted that yes, I was in premature menopause and I might feel less dreadful on HRT. I’m no under consultant care for it. It was very upsetting because we wanted another child and of course that didn’t happen - in fact, the consultant who scanned my ovaries said she thought my having DS was a miracle considering my ovarian reserve (v low AMH) and the state of my ovaries on the scan. My mother and maternal grandmother were in their late forties/early fifties when they started so no-one has any idea why I was so young.

Oh bless you but how amazing you had your child (relatively) older !

Absolutely NO ONE is the same you can't judge your peri menopause by someone else's symptoms

Branleuse · 28/05/2022 07:37

Im 45 and mine have been irregular and in perimenopause for a few years now. I just get spotting for a few days every few months

carefullycourageous · 28/05/2022 07:47

What is the definition of premature menopause? In my head I would have thought 49 quite late for things starting to go irregular.

I have only ever had regular periods when on the pill.

easyday · 28/05/2022 07:57
  1. No other symptoms at all. After about two/three years of increasing irregularity it just stopped. Now 60. Similar for a few of my friends - lucky us! My mum had a terrible time I was really dreading it.
carefullycourageous · 28/05/2022 07:57

I just looked up and the info was women typically go through menopause between the ages of 45 and 55. Premature menopause is pre-40, early menopause is 40-44.

samsalmon · 28/05/2022 07:58

At age 50, after 40 years of being regular as clockwork.

KangarooKenny · 28/05/2022 08:09

Mine didn’t become irregular, they became more regular and more frequent, going from 50/60 day cycle to bob on every 28 days. Then it became between 19/28 days and I ended up anaemic.

kerkyra · 28/05/2022 08:10

I'm 50 and haven't had a period since the beginning of March, hoping this is it.
The covid jabs mucked my cycle up for a bit at the start of the year so not really sure what is going on!

Bohoboo · 28/05/2022 09:51
  1. Am now 47 and 8 months without a period. Only symptom is feeling quite warm sometimes.
Kittycooo · 28/05/2022 11:50

So does a v late period mean you haven’t ovulated ? Sorry if obvious question!

At 48-49. I bled constantly for over 6 months end of 2020/beg 2021, then it went back to normal-ish in Sept last year, then back to constant. Then it stopped completely for 3 months (and I thought yay!), but now it started again Angry just want to it to stop and stay away for good!

lljkk · 28/05/2022 12:05

I want to say 16. But you need to define "irregular" for me to answer.

MadameFantabulosa · 28/05/2022 12:07

I was as regular as clockwork until I was 53, and then just stopped. No hot flushes, no menopausal symptoms at all.

elQuintoConyo · 28/05/2022 12:14

Last year at 45/46yo, started to skip a period or two, usually regular as clockwork. Hot flushes started and nights sweats. Hot flushes come and go - three weeks on, 5 weeks off, two weeks on, one week off - no rhyme or reason. Night sweats every night.

Brain fog is strong, very short temper. No anxiety, no joint pains, hair has always been thin. Middle-age spread and weight gain (could be due to lockdown cheese consumption!).

I need to get off my arse and go to the gp.

i guess my question is aimed at those who have had a regular cycle . So for me I have had regular 28!day cycles for 25 years, bar four pregnancies. So to be 9 (so far ) days later is unusual for me .

Cookerhood · 28/05/2022 14:03

Started to skip periods from 39/40. Had two episodes of 11 months between periods. Last one just before my 47th birthday.
Last child born when I was 38, but conceived very easily at 37, which is odd since peri started so soon afterwards. I sometimes wonder if the pregnancy threw me into peri. It took me ages to realise what was going on!

LadyIckenham · 28/05/2022 14:15

@Cookerhood, I have heard that fertility often has a 'last hurrah' in the run up to menopause so it could have been that.

I have no symptoms as yet and am somewhat paranoid about this (despite being 49).
