I am 49 and 9 days late for my usually regular cycle. Is this the age where periods start to go irregular?

What is the definition of premature menopause? In my head I would have thought 49 quite late for things starting to go irregular.

Not really @carefullycourageous The wind down can take a while, but most women notice a change in their cycle length first- often shorter or slightly longer. Like mine went from a normal 31-32 days in my thirties, to 27-28 days in my later 40s. I didn't miss a period until I was at least 51 .

I want to say 16. But you need to define "irregular" for me to answer.

@lljkk A normal cycle is anywhere from 21- 35 days.

lljkk · 28/05/2022 15:28

Yeah, I hated it when MWs/doctors ask about "regular" cycles because the words weren't defined (and probably can't be usefully defined for me). I said yes if I knew I wanted them to think about other aspects of whatever health issue we were discussing.

Fireyflies · 28/05/2022 15:30

I've actually become more regular in the last couple of years (ie since about age 45), and shorter - cycle is now about 23 days, and it uses to vary more but average around 30 days.

There are some definitions of what irregular periods are and it's usually cycles that vary by more than 5 days, either side of the previous cycle.

I dug out a diary from when I was 28-29yo. I tracked in those days because I thought I was supposed to. I recorded ... 27 31 30 27 28 35 25 46 29 32. I recall a year or 2 later, I had many, maybe 10 consecutive cycles, of 21-24 days. And then that changed too. Regularly irregular. Followed by many years of babies & breastfeeding. In last year looks like I've ranged from 21-60+. I highly recommend NOT tracking, btw. What a waste of time that was.

Been feeling kind of nauseous last couple of days. Am wondering if to do a pg test tbh!

Mine started being irregular at 44. Up until then my cycle was 28 days. Between 44 and 46 my cycle length changed and could be anything from three weeks to six weeks. My periods also got heavier. A Mirena coil at 46 sorted all that out and I never had another period afterwards.

Kittycooo · 25/06/2022 00:11

Hi again - well I am still without a period , 4 months after stopping V low dose HRT (which was on for 6 months )

I have no other meno symptoms - I went on HRT prob too soon tbh

could stopping it have messed up my naturall cycle ?

OP posts:
WarriorN · 26/06/2022 11:22

Who knows but it wasn't too soon - though if you're not having symptoms you may be ok without hrt.

zafferana · 28/06/2022 11:42

My cycle started to get shorter (so around 24-25 days) in my late 30s. Now 48, been on HRT for 2.5 years and cycles can be anything from 28-50+ days. I probably have about 9 periods a year, but I never have any idea when they'll turn up. Can't wait for the damn things to just stop!

Kittycooo · 03/07/2022 18:13

Think
mine has stopped ! Nothing for three months nearly after being regular cycle until then ! Wow !

Jigger2022 · 10/07/2022 15:38

About 40. Periods were coming any time from 20 days to 60 days. Now 46 on HRT for 3 months.

I went 11 months twice!

Pootle40 · 11/07/2022 22:42

At about 43 I noticed occasional 19 day cycles when I was always 27/28 days. Following year I skipped the odd month. Now I turn 47 later this year and I had no period at all between beg Feb until end of May but now had three 19 day cycles back to back.

notacooldad · 11/07/2022 22:44

It hasn't and I'm 57.
Same as my sisters who are 56 and 54!!😭

Furrybutts · 11/07/2022 22:46

Around the age of 47 periods became irregular. Missed some altogether some months. Then they stopped completely around 50.
53 now and don't have any menopause symptoms.
Not sure if it's 'I don't have them yet' though.

Fairislefandango · 11/07/2022 22:57

I'm 50 and I've had a couple of missed periods in the last year, and then this month it arrived 11 days early. No other major symptoms except sleeping worse and digestion has gone a bit crap.

MigAndMog · 11/07/2022 23:08

My cycle was always quite long and unpredictable but became a reliable 28 days after having my second child at 44. At age 51 I started feeling quite fed up and irritable and prone to sudden anger. I put it down to having two kids late in life until I read about peri menopause! The period that was due the week before my 52nd birthday didn't materialise and neither has the next one. At the same time I've started having some hot flushes. I read that 52 is the average menopause age but there is a huge range of ages and symptoms.

Icecreamandapplepie · 11/07/2022 23:10

Useless comment but I'm 43 and still every 28 days
On hrt for pmdd last 6 months, hasn't affected cycle at all, still 28 days

Following with interest...

silvermarble · 12/07/2022 06:52

I’m 42. Mine have been every 28 days since they started but this month I’m two weeks late so appear to have missed one. Not pregnant, so have no idea what’s going on. Not knowing if I’m suddenly going to come on plus the worry of what’s going on is a bit stressful.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 12/07/2022 11:16

48 nearly 49

Kittycooo · 13/07/2022 19:06

So varied !!

anyone else get nauseous feelings ? Have started that now too , comes and goes . Yuk !

I was 52 when my periods started becoming very heavy, very irregular (lasting 3 weeks at a time). I was 59 and 1/2 before my periods stopped.

I did think I would be later as my mum was 54 before first symptoms ... I guess it isn’t always hereditary
